Walking from the north Yeonnam-dong mural to Pip Espresso Bar
On my food-tour rounds through Yeonnam-dong, there's a cute but surprisingly large mural at the very northern edge. There's also a mural on the wall of the Yeonnam police substation, but I think this one feels like a real mural. I always just walk past it, but today I parked my bike and took a photo to prove I was here. The mural is so big that even my actual bike looks like part of the painting. Kind of a shame this wasn't placed in southern Yeonnam-dong near Hongik University Station — it would've become a landmark.
A little south of the north-end mural is a Yeonnam-dong café I go to often. It's in the relatively quiet northern block of the neighborhood, but today there was a film or drama shoot in full swing. In the old days, a shoot like this would've drawn a crowd hoping to spot actors, but in Yeonnam-dong filming just feels like part of the daily scenery now. Zero onlookers. I haven't watched a movie, let alone a drama, in so long that I probably wouldn't recognize the actors anyway.
As it happens, right across from the shooting location is Pip (PFIFF) Espresso Bar, today's caffeine refill stop. With the weather so nice, there were plenty of customers at the outdoor tables. I've come here many times, but this was the first time I saw even the outdoor tables and benches completely full. I was a bit thrown — maybe they were crew from the shoot?
No choice but to enjoy coffee inside today.
The entrance and window-side ordering counter at Pip Espresso Bar
Walk into Pip Espresso Bar and right past the counter you see the kitchen, with grinders and machines lined up in doubles. The rich, nutty smell of coffee beans is always a welcome hit. I still don't fully understand how burning coffee beans produces such an artful aroma — a mystery I can never quite solve.
The little cacti sitting neatly on the counter are adorable.
I only just noticed there are two windows that open straight to the outside. Given the nature of an espresso bar, drinking without occupying a table is much cheaper.
After ordering coffee, I headed toward the passage (?) on the right. I was way too full today, so I skipped the dessert cakes and tiramisu. Pip's tiramisu is famously top-tier.
Corridor mini tables for solo visitors, and the wide main room
Pip Espresso Bar has mini tables set up even in the corridor leading inside. The tables and benches, arranged to make efficient use of the space, are as cute as the little cacti up front. This is usually where I sit when I come alone.

There are quite a lot of tables inside. Honestly, for the whole of Yeonnam-dong, this isn't a small café at all. It's big enough that the word 'bar' in the name feels almost misleading.
Why the espresso is 2,500 won standing and 4,500 won seated
We came here today after a hearty meal with my mother and sister at a Yeonnam-dong restaurant.
After eating an unprecedented amount, I went with just one espresso. Standing and drinking it is ₩2,500, but since we took a table it was ₩4,500. My mother and sister ordered a decaf cappuccino and the signature Pip Coffee. Coffee has to be picked up yourself at the counter near the entrance.
Time for a quick visual appreciation moment. Glad they had decaf for my mother.
Even the cup was adorably small for the espresso — today's dose of stimulant. Down it in one sip, that's the real Italian style. Back when I was in my forties I used to drink coffee any time of day, in any cup, but now I don't have more than one a day, and 3 p.m. is my hard deadline.
