₩25,000 three-dish lunch at a Suwon Vietnamese restaurant: Madam Hao

In short

Madam Hao is a Vietnamese restaurant a 3-minute walk from the Ajou University entrance in Suwon, Gyeonggi. Arriving right at opening, the writer ordered bun cha (grilled pork with noodles) for ₩13,000, banh khot (crispy mini rice pancakes, 4 pieces) for ₩8,000 and northern-style summer rolls (2 pieces) for ₩4,000, starting with the shrimp chip appetizer. The charcoal-scented pork and herb-packed bun cha and the crisp banh khot all satisfied, and parking for 4 cars beside Madam Hao was a big plus.

Arriving at opening: the inner hall at Madam Hao already had diners

I couldn't tell from outside, but the interior of Madam Hao was way bigger and more pleasant than I expected, and there's another hall further in. It's a new restaurant, but there's already a wait during peak hours — even though I came pretty much right at opening, there were already guests in the inner hall. Certified good restaurant 👍

Spacious, pleasant main hall at Madam Hao

The overall interior atmosphere was just as distinctive as the exterior, full of local-style props that made the space feel cozy.

Going further in, there's another hall and the kitchen, and since most of the staff working there are actual Vietnamese locals, my expectations for the food shot way up. I couldn't even imagine how good it would be haha

What's on the menu at Madam Hao

Starting with the menu, the signature dishes are bun cha (grilled pork with rice noodles) and cha ca la vong (turmeric fish), and there's a wide range of popular items too — beef brisket pho, tom yum pho, mixed pho, pad thai — plus a variety of sides like banh mi, banh khot (savory rice pancakes) and northern-style summer rolls. I hadn't really tried much Vietnamese food beyond pho and bun cha, but Madam Hao's lineup felt authentically local and varied, making it a great spot when you want something special.

Table setting at Madam Hao

On the table were pickled garlic and sauces you could add to taste, so you could adjust the flavors to your liking.

There's a Naver review event going on, so make sure to grab that benefit too.

There's also a guide for enjoying bun cha, cha ca la vong, and banh khot, so give it a quick read 😋

First, the appetizer came out — a Vietnamese snack of shrimp chips. Addictive, you-can't-stop-eating shrimp chips, crunchy and delicious.

And then the main dishes arrived with overwhelming visuals. Just looking at the food photos, you'd wonder whether you were in Korea or Vietnam haha — the dishes were bursting with character and full of that local feel.

Bun cha ₩13,000: charcoal-grilled pork, herbs and the plating that sold us

Honestly I went back and forth between pho and bun cha, but I ended up choosing bun cha without hesitation because I fell for the plating. Each ingredient was arranged so stylishly that it looked incredibly appetizing just to look at.

The charcoal-grilled pork carried that smoky char without any off smell and was tender. The salad had lettuce and herb leaves, and these herb leaves tasted and smelled similar to Busan's bangha leaves, which was very much my personal taste. The sweet-and-sour fish sauce was refreshing and delicious too.

Generous portion of vermicelli noodles for bun cha

The vermicelli noodles came in a generous portion too, so I dug in hard. The bun cha was so, so good. If you're visiting Madam Hao, I highly recommend it!!!

Northern-style summer rolls, 2 pieces for ₩4,000: a side with no rice paper

The northern-style summer rolls, which don't use rice paper, look delicious just from the ingredients — tofu, egg, shrimp and vegetables all bundled up neatly, making it light and refreshing to eat. A great side dish to recommend.

Banh khot, 4 pieces for ₩8,000: crispy and packed with seafood

The banh khot, packed with seafood and grilled crispy, was so good even on its own, but wrapping it in rice paper made it a real treat, and adding herbs brought out that distinctive fragrance even more — even more to my taste. Made from rice flour batter, it was soft, light and crispy, definitely one of Madam Hao's best menu items and one I can recommend 👏👏

Who should visit Madam Hao, and when?

I used to think of Vietnamese food as basically just pho, without much chance to try such a variety of dishes, but Madam Hao delivered distinctive local flavors and atmosphere with satisfying quality and value for the price. Easy parking in the busy Ajou University area is also a big plus, so I'd strongly recommend it for family gatherings or dates. It's a genuinely good restaurant — definitely give it a try.
