Peking duck set for three with double portions at Suwon's Mirim

In short

Mirim Yangjang Time Villas Suwon Branch is a Peking duck-focused Chinese restaurant on the 3rd floor of Time Villas in Suwon, Gyeonggi. Visiting with two friends, the writer ordered the Peking duck set (₩59,000) plus double portions of two rice/noodle dishes, jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) and fried rice, and found the duck's skin crispy and meat clean-tasting, with the double portions generous enough for three people to share and still have leftovers. For a group of three, adding just one double portion is plenty.

I made plans to meet up with some younger friends I hadn't seen in a while, and since I wanted something a bit special that day, I went to Mirim Yangjang, a Time Villas restaurant known for its Peking duck. I looked up what "Mirim Yangjang" means and found out the original Busan location was a women's tailoring shop (yangjang) — they kept the name and just remodeled the interior when they opened this restaurant.

Mirim Yangjang Time Villas Suwon Branch is on the 3rd floor of Time Villas Suwon at 134 Sehwa-ro, Gwonseon-gu, Suwon-si. It's located in the cluster of restaurants right before you enter the Dining Avenue on the 3rd floor of Time Villas.

Beside the entrance, you can see a Peking duck hanging on display. Seeing the duck hung up like that made me think I was in for the real deal, so in I went :)

Ordering the Peking duck set for three

Peking duck set (half Peking duck + 2 dishes, choice of jjajangmyeon, jjamppong, or fried rice + 1 drink) ₩59,000, plus double portions on 2 dishes for an extra ₩4,000.

The three of us ordered the Peking duck set. It comes with half a Peking duck, 2 rice/noodle dishes, and 1 drink, and for the dishes you choose 2 out of jjajangmyeon, jjamppong, or fried rice. A friend who'd visited before said the jjamppong was great, so we picked jjamppong and fried rice, both as double portions.

Double-portion fried rice topped with a fried egg

How big is the double-portion fried rice?

The fried rice came topped with a nicely fried egg.

Ordering the fried rice also came with an egg soup, which paired nicely with the broth. The rice was fried up light and fluffy, giving it a great texture. With the three of us ordering both dishes as double portions and nothing extra, the fried rice portion turned out to be huge. It wasn't just 1.5 servings — more like a full 2 servings — so honestly one of them could have been ordered regular size.

The taste and ingredients of the jjamppong

We also ordered the jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) as a double portion, and it arrived in a big bowl, generously filled.

It was loaded with all kinds of vegetables, along with octopus, pinecone-cut squid, and shrimp, and the broth was spicy and rich. One spoonful and it was so fiery yet refreshing that I kept going back for more. There was a reason my friend recommended it :)

Being a double portion, the noodles were also plentiful. With three women ordering both dishes as doubles, the amount turned out bigger than expected and we left a little behind. Since the portions were so generous, ordering just one as regular size would have been just right :)

Half Peking duck, wrapped in wheat pancakes

This is the main dish, half a Peking duck. It comes with wheat pancakes, scallion strips, cucumber, and sauce.

Apparently making one Peking duck, from drying to roasting, takes at least 30 hours. The skin was glossy and golden-brown, looking delicious just to look at.

With Peking duck, I think the proper way to enjoy it is wrapping it with the accompanying ingredients rather than just eating the duck meat alone :) The wheat pancakes were individually wrapped in parchment paper, which felt more hygienic. There was no gamey smell at all, the skin was crispy, and the meat was tender and clean-tasting, making it even more delicious.

From the Peking duck to the fried rice and jjamppong, everything came in generous portions, making Mirim Yangjang — a great Time Villas restaurant in Suwon — a good spot to visit with family or a group and share a variety of Chinese dishes.

Final thoughts

  • It's fun to wrap the crispy Peking duck in wheat pancakes
  • A great choice when you want something a bit more special than typical Chinese food
  • For a group of three, adding just one double portion dish is plenty
