Hwaseong Chinese restaurant lunch: jjamppong rice at Bultina
In short
Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong Dongtan Namgwangjang Branch is a Chinese restaurant in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi, serving classic dishes such as jajangmyeon and jjamppong. At 11:40 a.m. on a weekday, the restaurant was nearly full, and the mild jjamppong rice and jajangmyeon again delivered plentiful cockles, deep broth, and generous sauce. A revisit-worthy pick for rich cockle jjamppong and moist jajangmyeon.

I thought it was good after trying it once, so I came back this time. It was just as delicious on my return visit, so I wanted to leave this recommendation for anyone looking for great jjamppong in Dongtan, haha.

Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong menu and weekday lunch atmosphere
Bultina Jjamppong does not have an overly complicated menu. Rather than feeling like a Chinese restaurant with a huge variety of cooked dishes, it mainly sells classic Chinese favorites such as jajang, jjamppong, tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork), and fried dumplings. I actually liked that the menu was simple, since there was no need to spend ages deciding what to eat.
We arrived around 11:40 a.m. on a weekday, and it was already nearly full. We got what felt like the very last available table, and I thought, ah, this place must already be well known by word of mouth, haha.
If it is this busy even on weekdays, you may need to wait if you come right at lunchtime. There is a Tabling waitlist device in front of the restaurant!

Jjamppong heat levels and ordering
You can choose the heat level for the jjamppong, too. Whether you cannot handle spicy food well or want something with a little more kick, you can pick according to your preference.
That day, we ordered jjamppong rice and jajangmyeon. We went with the mild heat level!

You can conveniently order from your table, and they bring the basic side dishes right over while you order.

For more side dishes or tableware, just grab what you need from the self-service corner. Since this place has lots of customers and a fast turnover, even the onions were in great condition. Jajangmyeon has plenty of onions in it too, and with customers constantly coming through, it felt as though the ingredients were being used up quickly. That somehow made me trust it even more.

How was the jajangmyeon with plenty of sauce?
First, the jajangmyeon! I liked that there was a generous layer of sauce. Sometimes jajangmyeon sauce is too thick or there is not enough of it, so the noodles do not mix well.
Bultina Jjamppong's jajangmyeon had just the right sheen and a generous amount of sauce, so it stayed nice and moist until the last bite.

The noodles arrived springy, not bloated, so we mixed them thoroughly with the sauce. And when you take a bite... heaven, haha.
It is not an incredibly unusual or new kind of jajang flavor; it is simply a delicious jajangmyeon that does the basics well.

Mild jjamppong rice with cockles in every spoonful
And this restaurant's key point is that it is not just jjamppong, but cockle jjamppong! We ordered it as jjamppong rice, and the cockles definitely made it feel more substantial.

Instead of only a sharp, spicy flavor rushing in, the broth had the distinctive deep taste of seafood, making it perfect for mixing with rice.
I liked this combination because you can enjoy a little of both rice and noodles. Every time you stir it around with your chopsticks, more cockles keep appearing. I picked out a few to take photos, and the cockles just kept piling up... haha. It also had toppings like mussels and wood ear mushrooms, and with the cockles added too, the broth tasted even richer.

Why I want to return again after revisiting
I had already visited once, so this was my return trip. It was just as delicious the second time around.
Seeing the tables nearly full before weekday lunch, Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong Dongtan Namgwangjang Branch seems to already be well known in Dongtan, and I could understand why it draws so many people. I would recommend it to anyone looking for cockle jjamppong with a deep broth rather than one that is only spicy, or for anyone who likes jajangmyeon with plenty of sauce and noodles that have not gone soft.
I think I will come back again the next time I am craving jjamppong.
