Hidden 2nd-floor restaurant in Mangwon-dong, jalapeño pork lunch: Noju
In short
Noju is a fine dining restaurant hidden on the second floor above the Mangwon Makguksu building near Mangwon Station in Mapo, Seoul. Arriving right at the 11:30 opening, two diners shared Noju's 38,000-won Chef's Choice Lunch, a six-course meal running from fig butter focaccia to beet tart, ragu pasta, truffle potato gnocchi, pork tenderloin in jalapeño sauce and walnut ice cream, with not one course phoned in. I've walked past Mangwon Makguksu so many times — it's hard to miss. But I never imagined there was a dining restaurant called Noju on the floor above it. I thought I knew Mangwon-dong's good restaurants pretty well. Guess not.

If you look closely you can spot the sign. But you really have to look closely — you could walk past a hundred times and never notice. Just head up to the 2nd floor. We got a partial discount on this visit.
Affordable fine dining in Mangwon: how to find Noju and where to park
Noju is on the 2nd floor of 56 Donggyo-ro 9-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul, right above Mangwon Makguksu. Hours are 11:30am-11pm, with a break time from 3-5pm and last order at 9:30pm.

It sometimes has a line, but turnover is fast because of market shoppers, so you won't wait long. Plus, shopping at the market gets you a 30% discount on parking.
I expected a cramped 2nd floor — Noju's dining room is not

Noju is set in a converted house, so the space isn't huge — pretty much every place in Mangwon is like that. But with the open kitchen and clean interior, it didn't feel cramped at all. You can see the chef cooking the whole time, which actually opens up the space visually.

And true to a course-dining spot, the table setting was impeccably clean and upscale. Since it's a course meal, I'd recommend booking ahead through Catch Table.

What comes in Noju's 38,000-won Chef's Choice Lunch
This is the menu we got, having arrived right at the 11:30am opening. The Signature Lunch is 55,000 won and the Chef's Choice Lunch is 38,000 won. We picked the Chef's Choice for two. We'd been hunting for affordable fine dining, so this price was a welcome sight.
The course runs: focaccia with fig butter → beet and endive tart → ragu pasta → truffle potato gnocchi → pork tenderloin steak → ice cream. We had to go to work afterward so we skipped wine... a bit of a shame.

The lighting's a little dim, which would be great for a first date. My boyfriend looked even more handsome, haha.
First course: fig butter focaccia

The first course was focaccia paired with fig butter.
Little bits of fig were studded throughout the butter. Seeing that instantly raised my expectations. The bread was warmed just right — crisp outside, soft inside. Spread with the slightly sweet butter, it was so good.

Once a course finishes, they clear the plates completely, so the next dish arrives on a clean slate.
Beet and endive tart: I could eat a hundred of these

Next up was the beet and endive tart. Apparently you're meant to eat the beet tart first, then the endive.

With the beet tart, you almost forget you're eating beet — the texture and flavor were that good. A subtle truffle aroma rose through it too. I genuinely wanted to eat a hundred of these. I mean it.
And then the endive. I was amazed how they maximized the seafood aroma with caviar and shrimp like that. The vegetables alongside the endive had great texture too — crunchy, with every bite.
Different sauces were dotted around the plate. I was surprised you could pair sauces this way too.
Ragu pasta that somehow isn't heavy

Next came the ragu pasta. It has a slightly salad-like feel but is served warm. You'd usually think of ragu pasta as heavy, right? This one wasn't heavy at all.
The balance of tomato and meat was just right. If it had been cold, it really would've felt like a salad. I'd never had ragu pasta in this style before.

And the noodles — I'd never experienced this texture before. It seemed like fresh pasta, and the appeal built with every bite. The seasoning was spot-on and the sauce was so good. I wanted to keep eating it.
Why every review raves about Noju's truffle potato gnocchi

Next up: truffle potato gnocchi. Reading reviews of Noju, everyone was raving about this gnocchi. Now I understand why.
Cut the gnocchi in half, pile on some truffle, and eat it with the sauce — I've never had gnocchi this good. I scraped the sauce clean off the plate.
Jalapeño-sauce pork tenderloin made me a jalapeño person

Next came the pork tenderloin steak, served with grilled zucchini and jalapeño sauce.
I'm honestly not a jalapeño person, so I told myself I'd just dip a little of the sauce. But... this sauce was so good? I've become a jalapeño person, haha. Spicy but bright, and it paired perfectly with the meat.

And how is the pork tenderloin this tender? Tenderloin can easily end up dry, but this was nothing like that. It was so good and surprising that I kept turning the meat over to examine it. The chef actually asked if something was wrong with it. No!! Not at all!! It was absolutely delicious, that's all!
Last course: walnut ice cream
The final course was walnut ice cream. My boyfriend loves ice cream, so this wrapped up dessert perfectly.
Noju paces each course to how fast you eat
The thing I most wanted to mention about Noju is the service pacing. Even though it's a course meal, the staff carefully check each table's eating pace before sending out the next plate.
We eat fairly fast, so our next course came out quickly. The table behind us was chatting and eating slowly, so their service ran at a more relaxed tempo. I loved this kind of attentiveness. There's no pressure to rush, and no boredom from waiting too long either. Whatever brings you here, I think everyone would be satisfied with this service.
A six-course lunch like this, at this price

Noju's Chef's Choice: 38,000 won for six courses. If you're after affordable fine dining, this place is genuinely worth it. Not a single course felt phoned in!!
I've been to plenty of Mangwon-dong restaurants, but I never expected somewhere like this to be hiding above a noodle shop... Mangwon really keeps surprising me the more I dig. Next time I'll come on a day off and try the wine pairing too. And I'm curious about the Signature Lunch as well.
