Sangnam-dong Changwon Korean BBQ for two: 400g pork belly, Jeju Doldam

In short

Jeju Doldam Sangnam Main Branch is a Korean BBQ restaurant in Sangnam-dong, Changwon, where staff grill Jeju black pork at your table. A married couple ordered 400g of oegyeopsal (five-layer pork belly) with a free kimchi stew, dipped it in myeoljeot mixed with galchisokjeot (salted fish sauces), and drank bokbunja mixed with soju. The chewy skin and gentle smoky flavor made Jeju Doldam a solid drinking-and-grilling spot, and hangjeongsal and gabrisal are next on the list.

Had dinner out with my wife for the first time in a while. Jeju Doldam, a Korean BBQ restaurant in Sangnam-dong, Changwon. She said she'd heard the meat here was great and wanted to book a table, and since black pork is one of my favorite things ever, I followed along without a second thought. The place was decorated in a nicely Jeju-style vibe.

Jeju Doldam, a BBQ restaurant in Sangnam-dong, Changwon, is open daily from 16:00 to 23:00.

What caught my eye before I even walked in was the aging chamber sitting right at the entrance.

You basically can't help but look at it as you walk through the entrance, so I gave it a quick glance on my way in — the raw meat looked great, with an appetizing color already. It got my expectations up before we even sat down to eat.

The restaurant has an open, straight-through layout so it never felt cramped, and it can seat up to 44 people, which makes it look like a good spot not just for family meals but for wedding after-parties or bigger group dinners and gatherings.

The place leans into its Jeju identity with basalt rock embedded in the walls — my own guess is that's exactly why they named it Jeju Doldam (Jeju stone wall).

Since it was just the two of us, we ordered the Jeju black pork oegyeopsal (five-layer pork belly), 400g.

Banchan and the free kimchi stew at Jeju Doldam

My wife, who'd been here once before, said the side dishes were still as good as ever, praising the myeoljeot (fermented anchovy sauce) and galchisokjeot (fermented hairtail entrails) combo. There were a few nice palate-cleansing sides too — we nibbled on macaroni salad and pink sausage while waiting for the main event, the black pork.

As a certified kimchi lover, I was already sold the moment mukeunji (aged kimchi) showed up as a side dish. I kept gushing about how good the kimchi was through the whole meal, and the owner, who's got a great sense of humor, took it in stride.

And then — a kimchi stew too?

It's a free service item, so I wasn't expecting much, but the kimchi stew turned out even better than I thought. It really brought out that tangy, deep flavor unique to aged kimchi. You can eat meat without ever hitting a greasy wall as long as you rinse your palate with the kimchi in between — that's basically unlimited-meat mode for me.

Staff grill the Jeju black pork for you

Jeju Doldam is a restaurant where staff grill the meat for you. It was nice being able to just relax and chat while eating.

We only ordered the oegyeopsal at first, and I later spotted hangjeongsal (pork neck) and gabrisal (pork shoulder blade) on the menu and regretted not ordering one of each — but honestly, the oegyeopsal alone was more than satisfying.

Anyway, being oegyeopsal (five-layer pork belly), the fat-to-meat ratio here was insane. Great balance between the lean meat and the fat layers, and the skin stayed chewy all the way through.

Too much lean meat gets dry, too much fat gets greasy fast, but here there was just the right amount of lean meat with rich, savory fat attached, so the juices burst out more with every chew. Add in that chewy skin texture and I actually think ordering just the oegyeopsal wasn't a bad call at all.

Grilled oegyeopsal with a smoky finish

The meat was nicely smoked, giving off a faint aroma almost like rice-straw-grilled samgyeopsal, which made it taste even better — that's Jeju Doldam, the BBQ restaurant in Sangnam-dong, Changwon, for you.

Salt, myeoljeot with galchisokjeot, and lettuce wraps

The first bite has to go straight to salt — that's just the unwritten rule. We both went for salt at the exact same time, haha. Dipping it plain in salt kept the focus on the pork's own flavor.

The myeoljeot + galchisokjeot combo was genuinely delicious. My wife recommended it and the moment I tried it, my mouth just lit up. The salty, deep, fermented aroma cut nicely through the fattiness of the oegyeopsal.

Had to try a lettuce wrap too, haha — a piece of pork on a sesame leaf, plus kimchi and a bit of the fermented sauce, all wrapped into one bite.

Bokbunja mixed with soju: the couple's drink of the night

It's a shame to eat meat without a drink, right? We ordered one bottle each of bokbunja (Korean black raspberry wine) and Jinro soju and mixed them. Bokbunja with sprite is great, bokbunja and soju 1:1 is great too — whatever suits your taste! Honestly the best move is just drinking bokbunja straight, but we pulled the budget-friendly trick(?) of cutting it with soju.

Having the meat grilled for us made everything easy, and the Jeju black pork oegyeopsal's chewy skin plus that gentle charcoal smoke flavor made it a great pairing with drinks. Next time we come back, we're ordering hangjeongsal and gabrisal too, so we can properly compare the different cuts. If you're looking for a good spot for a meat dinner out, I'd recommend stopping by Jeju Doldam, the BBQ restaurant in Sangnam-dong, Changwon.
