Jeju black pork oegyeopsal for 4, owner-grilled, in Changwon: Jeju

In short

Jeju Doldam Sangnam Main Branch is a Korean BBQ restaurant in Sangnam-dong, Changwon, serving Jeju black pork oegyeopsal (pork belly) grilled tableside by the owner. Four servings of black pork come with a free kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew), melJeot (fermented anchovy sauce), a dozen-plus side dishes, and finished off with mul-naengmyeon (cold noodle soup); the skin turned out chewy and the inside stayed juicy. The verdict of the day: more tender than the black pork the writer had eaten in Jeju itself.

I love black pork, but I can't exactly fly to Jeju every time the craving hits, so I searched for a good black pork spot in Changwon and found this one — Jeju Doldam, a well-known samgyeopsal spot in Sangnam-dong. They serve Jeju black pork, so off I went.

Stone walls and dol hareubang — Jeju vibes from the entrance

The Jeju feel hits you right from the entrance. Since they sell Jeju black pork, they've got stone walls and dol hareubang (stone grandfather statues) greeting you to set the mood.

Interior tables with stone-wall decor
Spacious interior of Jeju Doldam with plenty of tables

I went on a weekday before 6pm, so there was plenty of seating, and the interior kept up the stone-wall theme, which really did feel like Jeju. With so many tables, it looked great for group dinners or gatherings too.

Four servings of Jeju black pork oegyeopsal and the basic spread

We ordered 4 servings of Jeju black pork (oegyeopsal, pork belly).

Table set with side dishes

The basic spread included pickled onion, lettuce wraps (didn't manage to photograph those), garlic, chili peppers, ssamjang, wasabi, salt, green onion kimchi, kimchi, pink sausage, macaroni salad, and myeongi namul (wild garlic leaves). Pa-jeori (scallion salad) came out too! With so many side dishes, it was fun trying different combinations with the meat.

Free kimchi jjigae served with the meal

And get this — kimchi jjigae came free with the meal. Even though it was complimentary, it had a good amount of pork and tofu in it, which made me so happy. We ordered rice right away and ate it with the meat and stew. Can't resist kimchi jjigae — the seasoning was spot on and it was delicious.

Raw Jeju black pork oegyeopsal with fat and lean mixed

The meat had a good balance of fat and lean, so it looked like great quality from the start.

MelJeot sauce placed beside the grill

MelJeot and oegyeopsal grilled by the owner himself

MelJeot (fermented anchovy sauce) also came out, and the owner grills the meat for you! Such an easy setup — since the staff handles the grilling, all you have to do is eat comfortably.

He put the meat on, grilled all 4 sides thoroughly, and cut it up for us! The owner did the grilling himself and honestly, he was really good at it.

Oegyeopsal grilled on all 4 sides and sliced

Insane visuals, honestly. I usually like it when someone grills for me, but one thing I'm not a fan of is when they say it's done but it's actually undercooked, so I end up re-grilling it myself. Here, though, he grilled it exactly right. Totally satisfied. It had been a while since I didn't have to re-grill anything myself because it was cooked just perfectly. The owner really knows his stuff — genuinely great grilling.

Perfectly cooked Jeju black pork oegyeopsal

They plate the fully grilled meat for you like this, so all you have to do is pick it up and eat. Ridiculously convenient.

How did the oegyeopsal taste? Chewy skin, juicy inside

The oegyeopsal was really delicious. Thanks to the careful grilling, the skin was chewy on the outside and juicy on the inside — genuinely great. My husband said it was even better than the black pork we had at Sukseongdo in Jeju. (Sukseongdo's Jungmun branch was really not great, by the way.)

The meat was so tender and tasty that it just went down easy. Pairing it with the side dishes made it even better. Dipping it in melJeot was a perfect combo. And that kimchi — I think it might've been stir-fried kimchi or something — was really good too!!! With the meat quality being so good and grilled so well, it had been a while since I'd had such a moving black pork meal, honestly.

Mushrooms, zucchini, and shishito peppers grilled alongside the meat

They grill mushrooms, zucchini, and shishito peppers alongside the meat too — you know how good grilled veggies can be, right? Absolutely delicious...! Being pregnant, I couldn't drink, which was a bit of a shame on a day like this. Good food calls for a drink, but oh well.

Full table spread with meat and rice

Finishing with mul-naengmyeon

After finishing the meat and rice, we ordered mul-naengmyeon (cold noodle soup) to cleanse the palate!

Mul-naengmyeon ordered as a palate cleanser

The mul-naengmyeon was delicious too — this place is just good at everything. It was a perfect palate cleanser, and the noodles themselves were tasty, so give it a try.

In summary

Jeju Doldam Sangnam Branch served black pork that was more tender and tasty than what I had in Jeju itself — I highly recommend it as a Sangnam-dong, Changwon spot. The perks: the owner grills the meat perfectly for you so you can eat comfortably, and it's just so delicious — good enough that we already said we'd come back. A genuinely great meal at this Changwon Sangnam-dong black pork spot, Jeju Doldam. Strongly recommend.

Also, even though it's still fairly warm out, the AC inside was cranked up so much that I didn't sweat a bit even with the grill fire going. It was nice and cool, which made the whole experience even better.
