Solo trip to a Jongno bakery near Jongmyo Shrine: Munhwa Bakery
In short
Munhwa Bakery is a takeaway-only bakery right outside Exit 7 of Jongno 3(sam)-ga Station in Jongno, Seoul. Revisiting solo after a year, the writer tried the squid ink milk cream bread, garlic bread, coffee bread, and a new onion bagel, all in a tiny shop that lets in only two groups at a time but turns over fast. A perfect stop for takeaway bread before a walk around Jongmyo Shrine.

This time I went out for a small solo stroll around the Jongno streets and stopped by a bakery I'd really wanted to revisit. It had been a while since my last visit, but the moment I opened the door, that same warm, cozy feeling from before was still there — it made me genuinely happy.

Getting to Munhwa Bakery from Jongno 3(sam)-ga Station
My all-time favorite bakery is 'Munhwa Bakery' (문화제빵). I first tried it a year ago, and today I had business in Jongno so I revisited with a fluttering heart. Come out of Exit 7 of Jongno 3(sam)-ga Station and go straight — you'll find it right away! 🚶♂️💨
Jongmyo Shrine is right nearby, so it's the perfect spot to stop and pack some delicious bread before enjoying a walk through Jongmyo. If you're planning a Jongno outing or a date course, I really recommend stopping by! 👍

No seats, takeaway only — just 2 groups at a time
Please note that Munhwa Bakery is a takeaway-only bakery with no tables or chairs to sit and eat inside! On top of that, the interior is pretty tiny and cramped, so to avoid crowding, only 2 groups are allowed in at once. The turnover is super fast though!!!

A bread lineup that even wins over grandma's taste
The moment I stepped in, my eyes lit up at the variety of breads lined up — nothing you'd normally see everywhere. Drawn in by the toasty bread smell, I browsed slowly and found menus that broke away from the usual bakery style, full of the shop's own character and care. In particular, they had a solid lineup of injeolmi bread (sweet rice cake bread), peanut bread, and mugwort rice cake bread — the kind of items that perfectly capture what Koreans call 'grandma's taste.'

My top pick: squid ink milk cream bread
Munhwa Bakery has so many delicious breads, but my absolute favorite is the 'squid ink milk cream bread' (먹물 연유빵)! The nutty, savory flavor unique to squid ink bread paired with a generous, sweet, soft condensed milk cream makes you go 'wow' with the first bite.

New arrival: onion bagel
There was a new onion bagel that wasn't there on my last visit!! Or maybe it was sold out before and I just missed it, ㅜㅜ

They also had sliced bread, and the shelves were packed tight with breads that perfectly matched my personal taste — I had so much fun just looking around, ㅜㅜ

Nostalgic coffee bread
And they even had that nostalgic coffee bread that's getting harder to find at bakeries these days! The crisp, slightly bitter flavor of the coffee bun blends perfectly with the softness inside~

My second-best pick: moist garlic bread
After the squid ink milk cream bread, my second-best pick is the garlic bread! Usually, store-bought garlic bread is so crisp it's almost hard, to the point where it scrapes the roof of your mouth or gets stuck in your throat, making you reach for a drink. But Munhwa Bakery's garlic bread is on a completely different level — moist all the way through, with a soft, pillowy texture.

From simple, plain breads to signature menus made with real care, this is the full bakery lineup at Munhwa Bakery — just looking at it makes your heart feel richer the moment you walk in!

Individual packaging and a same-day-baking-only policy
I also really liked that every single bread on display was cleanly packaged individually! Since the pre-packaged bread can be grabbed and paid for right away, it seems like it would keep things moving quickly and smoothly even during busy hours.
Munhwa Bakery holds a strict policy of only selling bread baked that same day, so whatever bread you pick up, you get that same freshly-baked, moist, soft texture and rich flavor. When you go on a lot of bakery tours, you often find places that claim 'same-day baking' but still feel dry — this place is clearly different, fresh down to the texture of the bread.
And apparently, any bread that doesn't sell that day goes to children who don't get enough meals and elderly people living alone~! This place is just so, so likeable?! I'll be back again soon!
