Yeonsinnae katsu restaurant triple set with aged curry: Katsu Goen

In short

Katsu Goen (Katsu Monster Yeonsinnae Branch) is a Japanese-style tonkatsu restaurant near Exit 4 of Yeonsinnae Station in Eunpyeong, Seoul, where one person can order a mixed platter of pork cutlets. The triple katsu solo set (tonkatsu plus a noodle dish, 20,000 won) lets you swap the noodles for a side of bite-sized aged curry, so each cutlet can go from salt and wasabi to curry, and the shredded cabbage arrives piled so high that no refill is needed. For tasting three cuts in one sitting on your own, the Katsu Goen set menu is good value.

A great Yeonsinnae tonkatsu spot for solo dining Katsu Gohyeon

I've been to this Yeonsinnae tonkatsu restaurant several times, so let me introduce it properly — Katsu Gohyeon Yeonsinnae Branch, which is actually the same restaurant as Katsu Monster Yeonsinnae Branch.

Where is Katsu Goen? Right by Yeonsinnae Station Exit 4

There are quite a few tonkatsu restaurants in Yeonsinnae, but Katsu Gohyeon's solo set really won me over — it's a Yeonsinnae favorite. It's right near Exit 4, so it's perfect for grabbing a meal right after getting off the subway.

They do a huge amount of delivery, so there's a pickup locker for delivery riders outside the restaurant. While I was eating inside, so many delivery riders kept coming — I should try ordering delivery myself next time. Though tonkatsu is definitely better fresh out of the kitchen.

Mix your own sauce and take as much wasabi as you like

When you order, they bring out the sauces separately — tonkatsu sauce and salad dressing both come along. I personally love the salt + wasabi combo, and I liked that you can scoop as much wasabi as you want.

What I ordered: the triple katsu set for one with bite-sized aged curry

I'm greedy and love trying triple katsu with a variety of cuts, so I really appreciate restaurants with a good solo set menu. The solo set is tonkatsu + noodle dish (your choice) for ₩20,000, and the set for two is 2 tonkatsu + noodle dish (your choice) for ₩32,000. This place's cold soba is pretty generous too, but this time I ordered the bite-sized aged curry as a side to dip into. Last time, the person next to me was eating it and it looked delicious. The set menu is such great value that I highly recommend it. ✨

I ordered thoroughly — even a zero-sugar cola!

Is Katsu Goen comfortable for eating alone?

There's seating designed for solo diners, so you can eat comfortably. It's not a large restaurant, but it's a comfortable place to sit and eat.

The cheese katsu is so gorgeous it steals all the attention. The tonkatsu portions are pretty big, right? I couldn't finish it all — it was just too big, whew.

Generous rice and triple katsu portions

Generous rice and katsu portions — I'm glad I ordered the bite-sized aged curry too. Switching from salt + wasabi to dipping in curry gave a completely different feel, so it never got boring.

Shredded cabbage piled impossibly high

Another great thing about Katsu Gohyeon: they pile the cabbage so high you'll never need to ask for a refill. So much cabbage, hahahahahahaha.

How the triple katsu tastes: fillet, loin and cheese

As always, the first bite went with salt and wasabi — I love that clean, plain flavor so much.

First bite of katsu dipped in salt and wasabi

The breading isn't thick, so you can really taste the meat properly. The juiciness of the meat — so good.

Cross-section of tonkatsu with thin breading

Can you see that soft, tender texture? The hire katsu and rosu katsu really have distinctly different flavors depending on the cut, so I'm glad I ordered the mixed platter.

Tonkatsu dipped into curry

Dip it deep into the curry like this and it becomes curry tonkatsu. I personally love the curry and tonkatsu combo, so being able to order this as a side means I basically get to enjoy it twice — I'll order curry instead of soba next time too.

The eye-catching, gorgeous cheese tonkatsu — the size alone is overwhelming. That's how much cheese this katsu holds.

Being able to try all three flavors in a mixed katsu platter while eating solo was such a huge advantage. Reason enough to come back for another solo meal.

Full spread of the large triple katsu solo set

The portion is quite big too, so it's a set menu that will satisfy big eaters as well.

Finishing the Katsu Gohyeon set with cabbage on the side

With the cabbage on the side rounding everything out perfectly, if you're looking for a good solo-dining restaurant near Yeonsinnae, I recommend Katsu Gohyeon. It's already famous as a delivery favorite and a lot of people order it that way, but eating in the restaurant tastes even better, so I'd also recommend stopping by in person. 😀
