Sunday lunch near Pyeongtaek NC Outlet: Goryeo Mulchong Kalguksu in Bijeon-dong
Sunday family lunch! I went shopping with my mom and dad at the Pyeongtaek NC Outlet and then had kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) at Goryeo Mulchong Kalguksu in Bijeon-dong.

Choosing the menu that day fell to me, and it was one of those days where we were all hungry but didn't want anything too heavy, yet also didn't want to just settle for something mediocre. My whole family is impossibly picky haha.
So I searched furiously for good restaurants in Bijeon-dong and found Goryeo Mulchong Kalguksu, where you can get boiled pork, dongjuk clam kalguksu, and dumplings all in one place.

I figured hot-and-refreshing kalguksu plus dumplings would be perfect for a meal with my parents, so we hopped in the car right away!

You know how stressful it is to eat out on a weekend and have nowhere to park? Being able to visit without worrying about parking is a huge plus!
What the restaurant is like just after 1 PM on a weekend
We got there just after 1 PM. Walking in, the place was packed, so I knew right away this had to be a proper kalguksu spot in Pyeongtaek. You can just tell from watching people eat haha.
Goryeo Mulchong Kalguksu was bigger and brighter than I expected. The space had a warm, clean atmosphere with wood tones and ivory colors, and the large windows gave it an open, airy feel.

There were more tables further inside past the middle entrance, so the place was bigger than it looked from outside.

We were seated by the window, and even though the view outside was just the street, the big window let in a bit of that green summer feeling, which was nice.
Even with the restaurant full when we arrived, it strangely didn't feel loud or chaotic. Maybe it was the table spacing and layout, but we were able to talk comfortably with my parents throughout the meal.
What is on the menu, and the sold-out herb-boiled pork
Hungry, so let's get to the menu right away!!

From the signature Goryeo Mulchong Kalguksu to snow-flake black soybean kalguksu, bibim/perilla oil goldongmyeon, napa cabbage dumplings, and herb-boiled pork, the noodle dishes and side dishes were nicely balanced.

Apparently Goryeo Mulchong Kalguksu uses domestic dongjuk clams from Gochang and mussels from Tongyeong — just reading the description made the broth sound refreshing.

Honestly, I originally wanted the three-person set with kalguksu, napa cabbage dumplings, and the herb-boiled pork they say is boiled fresh daily, but the pork was already sold out that day...
Did everyone come in the morning to eat it?? This must be the true power of a top kalguksu spot in Pyeongtaek haha. Sad to miss the pork, but next time..🥲

I was about to order three bowls of Goryeo Mulchong Kalguksu, but I kept noticing bibim goldongmyeon, the new summer special posted above the menu board. Then I saw it on the next table's plate and switched my order right before hitting the button.

Final order confirmed.jpg 😁

We ordered 2 Goryeo Mulchong Kalguksu, 1 bibim goldongmyeon, and 1 napa cabbage dumplings.
Bibim goldongmyeon, the summer special, and how to wrap it in gamtae seaweed
The bibim goldongmyeon came out first.

Look at this! How could anyone resist ordering after seeing this visual haha.

The staff explained that you set the gamtae (dried seaweed sheets) aside, mix in sesame oil and broth, then wrap the noodles in the gamtae to eat.
It was different from your typical sweet-and-tangy bibim noodles. The sauce wasn't overly intense — it had a savory, gently spicy kick, and with whole perilla seeds and buckwheat mixed into the sesame oil, the nuttiness exploded!

Once we mixed in the broth, everything turned refreshing and clean overall, and the thin, chewy noodles paired well with the crunchy gungchae (a crisp vegetable).
Following the staff's suggestion to wrap it in gamtae added a subtle seaweed aroma, making it enjoyable in a whole new way.
Why the napa cabbage dumplings are a must-order side
And then the napa cabbage dumplings I was curious about! I'm not the only one who gets a little thrill lifting the lid off a whole steamer basket, right? Haha.
But these napa cabbage dumplings turned out to be a real gem. You absolutely have to order these as a side.

Instead of a wheat-flour wrapper, these are kimchi dumplings wrapped in napa cabbage leaves — and the filling itself is delicious. With kimchi, meat, and glass noodles inside, it was slightly spicy with great umami. Can cabbage leaves and dumpling filling really go this well together? 😍

Even better dipped in soy sauce!
How to eat Goryeo Mulchong Kalguksu with the 5-minute hourglass
Goryeo Mulchong Kalguksu has its own specific way of eating it.

As the food was served, the staff carefully explained: first, scoop out the boiled clams into your side plate, and once the broth comes to a boil again, add the noodles and cook them for about 5 minutes.
That explained why there was an hourglass on every table. Flip it over and wait, and it's exactly 5 minutes. Cute, right? Haha.
The dongjuk clams and mussels, delivered fresh daily straight from the source, were good plain, and just as good dipped in chojang (vinegar chili sauce) from the self-serve bar!
The broth is a combination of dongjuk clams and mussels, so you can imagine how good it is. It's clean and refreshing without feeling heavy or dull — the kind of refreshing that really clears you out inside. Words fail me haha.
After eating some clams, in went the noodles! We waited exactly 5 minutes haha. Since Goryeo Mulchong Kalguksu makes its own noodles in-house, the chewiness of the noodles was noticeably different.
The self-serve kimchi bar: fresh geotjeori to fully fermented
Refreshing clam broth, chewy kalguksu noodles, and domestic kimchi on the side — that's basically a guaranteed win combination! One of the things I liked most about Goryeo Mulchong Kalguksu was actually the kimchi.

The freshly made geotjeori kimchi served as standard was delicious,

but at the self-serve bar, they also had fully fermented kimchi and cabbage pickles ready. I'm actually team fermented-kimchi-with-kalguksu, so seeing that made me genuinely happy haha.
Apparently they make all their kimchi in-house, and it was tangy and well-fermented, pairing perfectly with the kalguksu. The culprit that made me overeat! Haha.
Free fried rice all year, with a nurungji (crispy rice) ending
And Goryeo Mulchong Kalguksu in Bijeon-dong offers free fried rice year-round. Once you finish the kalguksu, they said to scoop out some broth, add the fried rice ingredients, pour in about a ladle of broth, and stir-fry it.

At this point my parents said they were full and wanted to stop, but once I finished frying it up, they happily dug in anyway haha.

How is anyone supposed to resist Korea's dessert-course fried rice?

And the ending — scraping up every last bit of nurungji (crispy scorched rice).
Is Goryeo Mulchong Kalguksu worth it for a family meal in Pyeongtaek?
This visit to Goryeo Mulchong Kalguksu in Bijeon-dong was a proper kalguksu spot in Pyeongtaek, with refreshing clam broth combined with the chewiness of house-made noodles. The bibim goldongmyeon was uniquely delicious too, and the napa cabbage dumplings are a must-order!

It's great to visit with parents, and easygoing enough to bring kids along too, so I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a good spot in Bijeon-dong or a family meal place in Pyeongtaek. The spacious dining room with no parking worries is a big plus, and the set menus are well organized for 2, 3, or 4 people, so you can enjoy a hearty meal no matter your group size. It's also not far from the Pyeongtaek NC Outlet, so it's a good stop after shopping.

I'll have to go back to try the herb-boiled pork I missed because it sold out. It's bound to be delicious — no doubt about it haha!
