A great value spot for wine and brunch on the East Pangyo café street — this is my honest review of Andover, a Western-food restaurant in Pangyo, where I enjoyed a delicious cod gratin and ragu short pasta, browsed the Andover Market, and learned about their unusual corkage policy. Where the name Andover comes from

The origin of the name Andover was interesting. At first I assumed it was related to "Endeavor" — effort, trying something. But it turns out Andover is named after a small town near Boston where the two sisters who own this place once lived.

The sister-owners of Andover

Andover was built by two young sisters who put their heads together, pouring in their passion, care, and taste to create the space and the menu. Maybe that's why the restaurant doesn't feel like it was commercially staged, but rather like it was built and refined piece by piece into what it is now. Even the tables were made by them.

Maybe that's why the space isn't trying too hard to show off — there's a comfortable, oddly stable feeling to it. Before I knew it, even quiet me, without drinking a drop of alcohol, was chatting away with the sister who runs the place. haha

For brunch: meatball cream, meatball tomato, cod gratin (130g), and lasagna (320g), all around ₩22,000–24,000. The signature line comes in larger portions — Andover lasagna (650g), cod gratin (230g), flounder steak with baguette and more, around ₩29,000–32,000. Interestingly, they also offer light wine snacks, meal kits, and goods like aprons and mugs.

Since this was my first time here, I picked a mix of popular and curiosity-driven items.

  • Cod gratin & roasted vegetables ₩24,000
  • Ragu short pasta ₩24,000
  • Burrata tomato salad ₩19,000
  • Sprite ₩3,000
  • Iced Americano ₩4,500

Cod gratin & roasted vegetables, 24,000 won

The dish I was most curious about that day was the cod gratin. Cod gratin & roasted vegetables, 130g / ₩24,000. I had imagined chunks of cod in a gratin, but it was actually cod flesh mashed together with potato — soft and fluffy.

Spreading the salty, soft, savory cod like a pâté on baguette gave off a luxurious umami that lingered on the tongue. It seemed like it would pair perfectly with a chilled Sauvignon Blanc, and it even made me want to try recreating it at home. The roasted vegetables served alongside — eggplant, garlic scapes, mushrooms, bell peppers — had a nice variety and combined well.

Ragu short pasta, 24,000 won: no long noodles on the menu

I'm a fan of ragu, so the moment I saw "ragu" on the menu, I'd basically already decided on ragu pasta. What I wanted was ragu sauce with a flat long noodle like fettuccine or tagliatelle, but Andover only had ragu paired with penne, no long pasta. After some hesitation, I went with the ragu short pasta.

But with melted mozzarella on top of the penne and ragu, picking up cheese-covered penne piece by piece turned out to be pretty easy and enjoyable, and the texture of penne and meat together had its own charm.

This ragu short pasta too — ugh, this is definitely wine-snack material!!! I imagined this ragu paired with a Sangiovese-style wine would be a refreshing match.

Burrata tomato salad, 19,000 won

Burrata cheese, my obsession lately. Just one addition and a salad's quality shoots up. Sliced into easy-to-eat pieces and paired with arugula, the softness and slight bitterness come together nicely.

Naturally, eating burrata salad made me crave a glass of sparkling wine, haha. Too bad I'd driven — I don't know if daytime designated driving services even exist, haha. Since I had to drive, I skipped the wine and had coffee instead, which turned out to be quite strong.

A strongly brewed iced Americano at Andover

This place's coffee is strong, so personally I felt it worked better paired with food than as a dessert drink. If you like light, smooth coffee, it might feel too intense. I like weak coffee, so I ended up diluting it with water into two cups and drinking it as a wine substitute, haha. The coffee is on the stronger side, so it'll be a matter of taste.

Andover's corkage policy: free when you bring your own wine glass

There was a reason I kept craving wine throughout the meal. Partly because the dishes all paired so well with it, and partly because of Andover's unusual corkage policy, which I learned about once I got there. If you bring your own wine glass, corkage is free, haha. What if you bring the wine but not the glass? Then it's ₩5,000 per glass used as the corkage fee. A very reasonable corkage policy.

Because of this, apparently many customers order something light like meatballs or cod gratin, then bring their own glasses and wine from home to enjoy comfortably. Of course, they also sell wine here, and the lineup looks pretty good.

You can also buy a small snack cheese good for wine pairing in small quantities, for a good-value snack.

Andover Market meal kit prices

There's a small Andover Market corner in the restaurant. You can buy meal kits like jambon, meatballs, and lasagna, all handmade by the talented sisters. Delicious-looking handmade jambon, 120g for ₩11,000.

They really seem to understand the desire to go home and recreate a delicious meal for family. There were also handmade pasta sauces and basil pesto in easy-to-carry packaging.

What the room at Andover feels like

Enjoying a leisurely meal, I suddenly felt like I was in a small restaurant in some outer town of Boston. Sitting quietly, eating, chatting, no need to rush up from the table, just enjoying a relaxed space and time... I liked that cozy atmosphere.

Relaxed interior of the Andover dining room

Above all, Andover didn't feel like a kitchen boiling over with ambition and greed, but had a modest feeling of two sisters putting their heads together, thinking of the people eating, and building food and space they love.

Maybe that's why the whole space made my heart feel warm and, somehow, at ease.

Verdict: a Pangyo Western restaurant for daytime wine with your own glass

Andover, located on the Baekhyeon-dong café street, is great for a casual coffee or brunch, but personally, I think it's an even better Pangyo Western restaurant to bring your favorite wine and glass to, order something delicious, and enjoy a slow day-drinking or night-drinking session.

With plenty of casual wine-friendly dishes like cod gratin, ragu short pasta, meatballs, and lasagna, plus a pretty reasonable corkage policy, I personally felt this is a place worth visiting before it gets too famous. Next time, I plan to go on a weekend morning with a light bottle of wine and my own glass for a relaxed brunch. If you're looking for a place in Pangyo to enjoy brunch and Western food at a leisurely pace, I recommend this Baekhyeon-dong favorite, Andover.
