Brunch restaurant in Hongdae, Seoul with two peach highballs: Omil

In short

Omil Hongdae is a Western-style brunch restaurant on the second floor between Exit 8 and Exit 4 of Hongik University Station in Mapo, Seoul. The rubber duck omurice (omelette rice) and hot-plate cheese katsu were ordered together, the peach highball was good enough to order twice, and the rubber duck toy and mini float on top of the omurice could be taken home as a gift. With no break time, Omil Hongdae works well for an off-peak date or a meal with friends.

Hongdae has so many good restaurants and cafés that dating there always turns into a whole debate over where to go. This time I wanted something a bit different from the usual, so while looking for a good-value Hongdae date spot, I ended up at Omil Hongdae.

From the adorably cute rubber duck omurice to the sizzling cheese cutlet where they pour cheese right in front of you, the menu itself is fun, which makes it a great Hongdae date spot too. It's not just about the taste — there's fun in taking photos as well, so it seemed like a really good option for friend gatherings or couple dates 🐥

Where is Omil Hongdae and what are its hours? How close is Hongik University Station?

Omil Hongdae is on the 2nd floor of 178-8 Yanghwa-ro, Mapo-gu, Seoul, between Exit 8 and Exit 4 of Hongik University Station. It's open 11:00 / 11:30 to 21:15, with last order at 20:30. Groups are welcome, but there's no parking.

It was also a convenient spot to stop for a meal while shopping or wandering the streets of Hongdae.

You can put your name on the waitlist through Catch Table, and there are even cutely decorated chairs to wait on out front. Hongdae is always crowded with maze-like alleys, so having a spot this close to the station made it easy to pick as a meeting place.

What is the atmosphere like inside Omil Hongdae?

Walking into Omil Hongdae, the space felt bigger and cleaner than I expected. The overall vibe was tidy, and the natural light coming in made the interior bright and pleasant.

Best of all, there's no break time, so you can eat whenever you like. I thought that was really convenient for those in-between hours when you're out shopping or running errands in Hongdae and suddenly need to eat 👍

The atmosphere wasn't too heavy either, so it worked well not just as a Hongdae date spot for couples but also as a place to eat and hang out with friends.

Omil Hongdae's menu and the peach highball we ordered twice

Omil Hongdae's menu is built around brunch-friendly dishes. True to a proper Western restaurant, there's a solid range of steak, pasta, gnocchi and more to suit different tastes.

They also have highballs, which was great to see. The peach highball was so good I ended up ordering it twice 😂

The gentle carbonation, the jelly-like texture of the topping, and the sharp sweetness of the highball worked really well together.

Hot-plate cheese katsu: melted cheese poured at the table

What sets Omil Hongdae's cheese cutlet apart from a regular one is the performance you get to watch up close. Cheese poured straight onto a red-hot iron plate right in front of you is quite a sight.

Watching the cheese sizzle and melt over the cutlet was fun in itself, and the dish sparked my appetite the second it landed on the table 👍

Cutting into the cutlet revealed plenty of cheese inside too, stretching in long, satisfying strings. The crispy outside and tender inside of the cutlet paired with that rich, savory cheese was a combination that's hard to get wrong.

I especially liked that the iron plate stayed hot the whole time, so it was still warm to the very last bite. The cutlet alone could get a bit heavy, but the tomato, broccoli and corn served alongside made it easy to balance out the richness.

Rubber duck omurice: can you take the duck toy home?

It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say the rubber duck omurice was the main reason for this visit to Omil Hongdae. The moment it arrived, I got why this dish is so popular — it's peak cuteness that completely steals the show visually.

The rubber duck figure and mini tube decoration bumped the cuteness up even more. And here's the fun part — that rubber duck figure and mini tube are actually given as a gift to take home!

I'm the person who can't resist anything cute, so this was right up my alley. Rather than the meal just ending when you finish eating, you walk away with a little souvenir too, which makes it an even more fun choice for a date. Of course, if a dish is only cute and doesn't taste good it'd be a letdown — but thankfully this one delivered on flavor too 🤍

The egg on the omurice was fluffy and soft, and the fried rice underneath was seasoned just right, balancing nicely with the egg. Add the omurice sauce on top, and the soft egg, rice and sauce all came together naturally.

Personally, ordering the rich, savory cheese cutlet alongside the soft, gentle rubber duck omurice worked really well — the two dishes had such different charms that they complemented each other nicely.

Hongdae has no shortage of great restaurants, but what I loved this time was getting to enjoy not just the flavor but also the visuals and the fun of the experience. With easy access from the station, a clean and bright interior, and a varied menu, this is a place I'd recommend if you're looking for somewhere to eat in Hongdae. If you love cute dishes, the rubber duck omurice is worth trying at least once, and if you love cheese, the sizzling cheese cutlet is a great pick too.

Final verdict: what to order together at Omil Hongdae

Omil Hongdae is a great match for anyone looking for a Hongdae brunch spot or a Hongdae Western restaurant 🤍 The rubber duck omurice was so visually cute that it made for a fun photo session, and the sizzling cheese cutlet turned the eating process itself into an experience thanks to the hot plate and cheese performance.

It's easy to reach from Hongik University Station, and the clean, bright interior made it a good pick for a Hongdae date spot — I also think it'd work well for sharing several dishes with friends.

If you want something a little more special and cute than an everyday meal, go for the rubber duck omurice, and if you're a cheese lover, pair it with the sizzling cheese cutlet. If you're looking for a place in Hongdae that checks the boxes for taste, visuals and date-night atmosphere all at once, this is worth a visit :)
