Yongin Suji chicken restaurant with stream-view seats: Gorae Byeoljang

In short

Gorae Byeoljang Suji Branch is a chicken bar and restaurant on Seongbok1-ro in Suji-gu, Yongin, facing Seongbok Stream. A family of four filled up on a bird and a half of the Gorae three-flavor boneless chicken, Jeonju-style pork jeon (pan-fried pork in egg batter) and a bowl of rice, and in cooler weather Gorae Byeoljang leaves the doors open so chicken and beer feel like an open-air night terrace. Because the boneless chicken uses only thigh meat, it never turns dry, which is why children eat it happily and the place stays a neighborhood regular's spot.

Living in Suji, Yongin, I've been to quite a lot of chicken places, but honestly this is the first one I keep thinking about again and again. If you're looking for a real neighborhood favorite instead of a franchise chicken chain, let me introduce Gorae Byeoljang, a spot the Suji locals keep coming back to. If you want to enjoy chimaek (chicken and beer) in an open-air pojangmacha mood near Suji Lotte Mall, this is the place.

Where is Gorae Byeoljang Suji Branch, and is parking free?

Gorae Byeoljang Suji Branch is located at 1F 103, 80 Seongbok1-ro, Suji-gu, Yongin-si, Gyeonggi-do. It's right in front of Seongbok Stream, so if you sit by the window you can eat while looking out over the stream.

Window seats overlooking Seongbok Stream

When the weather turns cool, they leave the windows open, and that gives it exactly the feel of an open-air pojangmacha. It was great being able to enjoy chimaek with that open, breezy feeling without having to go find some outdoor spot elsewhere. It's not far from Suji Lotte Mall, so it's also a great dinner stop after shopping. The building's parking lot is large and free, so it's perfect for taking a walk along Seongbok Stream to digest after the meal.

Inside Gorae Byeoljang: stream-view windows and seating

Seating inside Gorae Byeoljang Suji Branch

Gorae Byeoljang Suji Branch has seating from tables of four up to group seating for 10 or more, but it was so packed every time I came that I could only take a few photos of the interior.

Clean interior with rows of tables

Around it, other shops often have plenty of empty seats, but this place is always packed full. The store is clean and has more than 10 tables, so it can comfortably seat plenty of guests.

Menu and set prices at Gorae Byeoljang Suji Branch

Menu board listing chicken and jeon dishes

The menu is made up of chicken, jeon (pan-fried meat), and a variety of side dishes. Because they sell such a wide range of food, it works well as a family dinner spot even if chimaek isn't your goal. If you have kids, ordering one chicken and one dish for the adults is already enough to fill the table.

Set menu composition and pricing

What really stands out here is the set menu, which is amazing value — starting from the ₩20,000s, and even a 3-item set is only ₩38,000.

If it's your first visit, try the Gorae Byeoljang Set. It comes with chicken, tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), and pork jeon, and it's absolutely delicious. (The tteokbokki is a bit spicy, so it might be too much for little kids.)

The prices are such great value that a family of four could eat their fill without worrying about the bill. Dining out prices aren't easy these days, so for this price and this quality, I think it's the best value among Suji's open-air chicken spots.

Table set before the food arrives

The chicken here is made only from chicken thigh, so it's soft and kids eat it well. We ordered a variety: a bird and a half of the Gorae 3-type boneless chicken, my personal favorite Jeonju-style pork jeon, and a bowl of rice to feed the kids.

Popcorn and the basic side dishes come out first.

Soy sauce served with the chicken
Mild red sauce and basic side dishes

This soy sauce is absolutely delicious. The red sauce is good too and not spicy, but the soy sauce suits my taste a bit more.

Finally, the food arrived at the table. This is a local Yongin Suji favorite that's tasty no matter how much you eat — let's dig in again.

Gorae 3-type boneless chicken made only from chicken thigh

The chicken is made only from chicken thigh. There's none of that dryness you get with chicken breast, and it's soft all over, so even kids who don't usually like chicken ate it well.

The batter is also thin and crispy without being greasy, which made it great for the kids too. Even a kid who usually leaves the batter behind ate everything. The portion was generous too, so a family of four could eat their fill.

It comes with shredded scallions and onion too, so you can enjoy a range of flavors.

Boneless chicken with thin, crispy batter

Dip it in the two sauces and before you know it, the bird and a half is gone.

Tender chicken thigh meat inside the boneless chicken

It's really soft and delicious.

Jeonju-style pork jeon on a plate

The jeon is a must-order menu item here. I've had jeon at many different places, but this is the best. Out of the whole menu here, this jeon is my favorite. (Yes, I'm already a real regular here after n visits.)

Pork jeon topped with scallion salad

The meat is soft and not tough at all, so each piece just goes right down. Eating it with the scallion salad that comes alongside is the best combination. I've had more than a few visits where I went for chicken but ended up falling harder for the jeon.

When we went as a kind of family dinner for the kids, it also worked great served with rice. It's soft, so the kids ate it really well too.

A piece of jeon with sweet-and-spicy shredded scallions

Eaten together with the sweet-and-spicy shredded scallions, it's absolutely the best flavor.

Table spread of chicken and jeon eaten together

Enjoying the crispiness of the chicken together with the savory richness of the jeon, I once again had a proper meal at this local Suji favorite.

Final verdict on Gorae Byeoljang Suji Branch

Having lived in Suji and been to plenty of chicken places, it's been a while since somewhere kept coming back to my mind like this.

Plates of leftover chicken and jeon after the meal

This place is on a completely different level from franchise chicken. The softness of the thigh-only chicken, the tender jeon, and the open-air atmosphere overlooking Seongbok Stream — all at this price, it's a genuine Suji favorite.

Open-air pojangmacha atmosphere at Gorae Byeoljang Suji Branch

If you're looking for a good restaurant in Yongin Suji, want that open-air pojangmacha atmosphere, or are especially looking for a chicken place that's good to bring kids to, I genuinely recommend this one.
