Dandae-ogeori chicken restaurant with spicy whelk salad: Jangjakgun
In short
Jangjakgun Main Branch is a wood-fired nurungji (scorched rice) chicken and draft beer restaurant a 10-minute walk from Dandae-ogeori Station in Seongnam, Gyeonggi. Arriving at 6:30pm on a Sunday meant a 30-minute wait, then a half-and-half nurungji chicken for 26,000 won and golbaengi-muchim (spicy whelk salad) with thin noodles for 20,000 won, ordered by kiosk with a self-serve chicken radish bar. Because the chicken is roasted over wood rather than fried, it sits light even as late-night food, and the spicy whelk salad was the best part of the pairing.

How long is the Sunday evening wait at Jangjakgun?
Jangjakgun Main Branch was already fully booked at 6:30pm on a Sunday, and there were 5 groups ahead of me in line. If you're visiting during evening hours, it's a good idea to plan for about a 30-minute wait. The location sits right on the main road in a big, visible spot, so it was easy to spot even on my first visit.
On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings, there's almost always a line if you walk by.

Self-serve chicken radish bar and kiosk ordering
Jangjakgun Main Branch has a self-serve chicken radish bar, so you can refill without feeling awkward about it. I'm a total "chicken radish lover," and I always feel bad asking for more, but here you can just help yourself, which was great haha
You order easily through the kiosk installed at each table, and paper cups are kept hygienically stored behind the table — such a nice touch!

What two people ordered: nurungji chicken and spicy whelk salad prices
For two people, we ordered the half-and-half nurungji chicken for ₩26,000 and golbaengi-muchim (spicy whelk salad) with noodles for ₩20,000. The moment the chicken arrived, the oak-wood aroma wafted up, and my mouth was watering before I'd even taken a bite.
Since it's healthy wood-fired roasting rather than frying, it goes down easy without feeling heavy, and the sauce is just sweet enough that it sticks to your lips in the best way >< At the bottom of the dish there's a layer of savory nurungji (scorched rice), and topping that with the stretchy cheese for one bite together... it's just insanely good 🤤 The golbaengi-muchim we ordered alongside was spicy and tangy, which perfectly cut through any greasiness from the chicken.

Why the staff say to eat the chicken breast first
When the food arrived, a staff member at Jangjakgun Main Branch told us the best order to eat it in.
You should eat the breast meat first — that way it's moist and tender!
There were tips for enjoying the food posted around the restaurant too, which really showed how much they care about their guests. I tried it exactly as she suggested, and there was no dryness at all — it was genuinely moist.

Certified draft beer masters and the outdoor terrace mood
Jangjakgun Main Branch is a certified draft beer "meister" restaurant, and sure enough, every table had a glass of draft beer on it. Living up to its reputation as a Dandae-ogeori draft beer spot, the beer is managed strictly, so apparently it goes down especially smoothly. Unfortunately I was driving that day, so I settled for a non-alcoholic drink to get in the mood... but if you're not driving, you have to try a cold draft beer alongside your meal!
This was my first visit to Jangjakgun, and the outdoor tent-dining atmosphere was so charming. In this kind of weather, having a drink outdoors with great food on the side is basically the definition of small, everyday happiness haha
Who is Jangjakgun Main Branch best for?
This is light, well-balanced chicken with the grease drained off, plus a subtle smoky flavor from the wood fire, so it sits easy on the stomach even as late-night food — and the spicy golbaengi-muchim pairing was the perfect finishing touch. I'd definitely recommend stopping by when you're craving a cold beer after work, or for a weekend family dinner out!
