Sunday night Korean BBQ in Hongdae with no wait: Chopilsal Pork Grill
In short
Chopilsal Pork Grill Hongdae Branch is a pork barbecue restaurant in Mapo, Seoul, three minutes from Hongik Univ. Station Exit 1, and the Hongdae outpost of a chain headquartered in Busan. Arriving at 7:10pm on a Sunday meant no wait at all, and the meal ran through two servings of salted ogyeopsal (five-layer pork belly) at 12,000 won each and one serving of jinjja dwitgogi (pork neck) at 10,500 won, closing with zucchini doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) at 7,000 won. The chewy pork skin and a stew broth as rich as tonkotsu ramen are worth a return trip to Chopilsal Pork Grill for the pork skin dish alone.

Hi, it's Minkyung haha. Last weekend my boyfriend and I finally went to a Hongdae pork BBQ spot I'd been meaning to try for ages — Chopilsal Pork Grill! Their original location is in Busan, and I'd had it saved for so long, so when they opened a Hongdae branch I was so happy to finally go!
How to find Chopilsal Pork Grill Hongdae Branch, and is there a wait?
Chopilsal Pork Grill Hongdae Branch is a 3-minute walk from Hongik Univ. Station Exit 1. If there's a wait, you register on the CatchTable kiosk in front of the store!

I haven't watched Street Restaurant Fighter, but I think the owner of Chopilsal Pork Grill appeared on it haha!
Luckily there was no wait for us, so we got seated right away (visited Sunday at 7:10pm).
Inside Chopilsal Pork Grill: 10 tables and a multilingual menu

This is the inside of Chopilsal Pork Grill Hongdae Branch. There were 10 tables, and all but two were full! Definitely feels like a real Hongik Univ. Station favorite 💙

Fitting for Hongdae's international crowd, they had menus in Japanese, English, and Chinese too haha.
Chopilsal Pork Grill Hongdae menu and prices

The meat menu has pork skin (₩9,500), salted ogyeopsal (₩12,000), jinjja dwitgogi/pork neck (₩10,500), and Choryang pork ribs (₩12,000).

For the meal/side menu, there's chon pork kimchi jjigae (₩9,000), zucchini doenjang jjigae (₩7,000), mixed cold noodles (₩8,000), double cheese steamed egg (₩4,500), radish salad rice bowl (₩2,000), and extra pollock roe (₩2,500)! *Looks like if you leave a receipt review, they give you either a pork skin tasting or a Chopilsal hair tie!

And here's the drinks menu!! They sell quite a wide variety of alcohol haha.

But we went with just soda haha. We'd been walking around a lot that day, so to keep to one drink each we ordered two cans of Pepsi Zero (₩2,500).

Banchan and the dipping sauces served with the pork
For banchan (side dishes), we got pickled gochujang radish, gungchae, wild mountain greens, white kimchi, radish salad, garlic and chili peppers, and perilla leaf pickle!

For dipping sauces for the meat, they bring fermented anchovy sauce, garlic pollock roe, and ssamjang! Oh, and they give each person their own plate with all four sauces on it.

Grilling two servings of salted ogyeopsal and one of jinjja dwitgogi
Since the first order has to be 3 servings or more, we ordered two servings of salted ogyeopsal (₩12,000) and one serving of jinjja dwitgogi (₩10,500)! Can't believe we're a place famous for pork skin and didn't even order the pork skin,,🥲

At Chopilsal Pork Grill, the staff don't grill the meat for you, so you have to do it yourself! And as always, my boyfriend grilled it up deliciously today too!

Ooh, grilled up nice and golden! TMI, but I actually prefer ogyeopsal (five-layer pork belly) over regular samgyeopsal. It's rich and juicy, and the skin makes it chewy and delicious haha.

Also great with the wild mountain greens + garlic pollock roe combo, yum

And we also tried it with the radish salad combo haha

I like the fermented anchovy sauce, but my boyfriend usually isn't a fan? Surprisingly though, he said he wanted to try dipping it in, so he did haha,, though he dipped in way too much so it got salty,,
Next up we grilled the dwitgogi (pork neck)~ First bite had to be with just salt! Then we tried it with ssamjang, and it was a little chewier than the ogyeopsal with a stronger meaty flavor!

The grilled mushrooms were tasty too, nom nom

Finishing with zucchini doenjang jjigae, 7,000 won
My boyfriend usually likes to finish a BBQ meal with a rice dish! We went back and forth between kimchi jjigae and doenjang jjigae and ended up ordering the zucchini doenjang jjigae (₩7,000). It had such a strong pork broth flavor that it reminded me of tonkotsu ramen! (Almost like tonkotsu ramen with Korean doenjang stirred in?😆) And I assumed the zucchini would be sliced into half-moons, but it was julienned instead, which gave it an even better texture haha.
Oh, and the jjigae came with a bowl of rice included! ₩7,000 for stew plus rice, pretty good deal right?

I had a bit too, and there was more meat and mushrooms in it than I expected — really tasty.

Also check the country-of-origin labels while you're there!
