Garak Market sashimi takeout by Ttareungyi bike: Yeongjae Susan
In short
Yeongjae Susan is a sashimi and seafood shop on the first floor of the Garak Mall sales building at Garak Market in Songpa, Seoul. Two of us wanted fall gizzard shad, so we ordered the small Jeongwangchamhoe platter (gizzard shad, flounder and red seabream, 65,000 won) to go, and the packing stayed neat even after a ride home on a Ttareungyi public bike. With fresh grated wasabi and a no-extra-charge fish stew kit, Yeongjae Susan is a good pick when you want gizzard shad and other sashimi in one order.

Fall's seasonal foods are starting to show up one by one 🍂 And one of the first things I think of in autumn is gizzard shad! I wanted gizzard shad sashimi, so this time I went to Yeongjae Susan in Garak Market :) If you want good quality sashimi at a good price, Garak Market is the place to go 🥴

Which entrance avoids the touts? Seafood Mall Gate 6
If you go in through Seafood Mall Gate 6, Yeongjae Susan is right there the moment you enter. Honestly... I'm a bit scared of hawkers/touts, and one small perk of Yeongjae Susan is exactly this route.

See, it's right there!! You don't have to go through the central street and get pulled by touts. I went through the central street once and it totally drained me 🥹

Yeongjae Susan also has all kinds of seafood out front, so browsing was fun. You can see live fish in the tanks, and they sell seasonal seafood like fresh shrimp and gizzard shad, so I really agonized over what to get 😣 Still, it was great being able to pick and pack sashimi right inside Garak Market!
Yeongjae Susan menu and the 65,000-won small Jeongwangchamhoe platter

The menu board has big photos laid out, so it's easy to see everything at a glance

Bluefin tuna sashimi / flatfish / mullet / sea bass / flounder / horse mackerel / croaker / red seabream / sekkoshi (thin-sliced small fish) — Yeongjae Susan has various combo platters and single-fish orders. When I visited, the seasonal menu with gizzard shad especially caught my eye. Gotta have gizzard shad in fall, right~~~~
After some thought, we ordered the Jeongwangchamhoe! It's a combo of gizzard shad + flounder + red seabream, so you get three types of sashimi at once. Just gizzard shad alone felt a bit lacking, but only one kind of fish also felt like not enough — this combo was the perfect middle ground!
It also comes in different sizes so you can pick based on headcount, which was nice. There were two of us so we went with the small — perfectly sized!! The price was ₩65,000! ⭐️And if you order via Naver, you can use a 20% discount coupon, so definitely check Naver before you go!!⭐️
How well did the takeout pack travel, and how far does Yeongjae Susan deliver?

If you wait a bit, Yeongjae Susan packs your order carefully and nicely. Ah, while waiting I noticed they do a lot of delivery too. Turns out the delivery radius differs a bit by platform!
- Coupang Eats / Baemin1 / Yogiyo → free delivery within a 4km radius of Yeongjae Susan
- Ddangyo / Baemin store delivery → free delivery within a 7km radius of Yeongjae Susan (extra delivery fees may apply depending on distance)
- Merman King Pirates app → delivery possible within a 100km radius of Yeongjae Susan (delivery fees may be added by distance)
We rode over on a Ttareungyi bike since it's close, but if it's too much hassle, I'll just order delivery next time 😆
How the platter tasted: nutty gizzard shad, springy flounder, firm red seabream

Ta-da
Even after riding a bike all the way home, it was packed so carefully that it arrived without a single thing out of place

The visuals are insane, look how packed the sashimi is 🥹 The first thing I tried was, of course, the gizzard shad I'd been looking forward to! I could taste that distinctive nutty flavor of fall gizzard shad, and the more I chewed, the more the flavor built up
There's a reason people say gizzard shad has to be eaten in season, haha. It had been a while since I'd had gizzard shad sashimi and it was so good 💗

And the flounder that came with it had a totally different, clean flavor from the gizzard shad! Flounder has that distinctive chewy texture, need I say more~~ And the way they cut the plump fin part of the flounder was so good it made me gasp 🫢

The red seabream was there too, so it was fun alternating between the three kinds. Gizzard shad is nutty and full-flavored, flounder is clean and chewy, and red seabream has a firm texture — even on a single plate, the taste and texture varied slightly between each type of fish, which I loved ෆ

Fresh grated wasabi and the free fish stew kit
The takeout order from Yeongjae Susan came with fresh wasabi, and they threw in a fish stew kit at no extra charge. I like dipping sashimi lightly in soy sauce with a bit of wasabi, and this wasabi passed the test since it was fresh 😎 The packet wasabi kind doesn't cut it for me. Eating it this way let the flavor of the sashimi itself really come through, and dipping it in chojang (vinegared chili paste) gave it a whole different sweet-and-tangy vibe, haha.
Above all, I felt that if gizzard shad alone feels like not quite enough and you want to try several kinds of sashimi, Jeongwangchamhoe is a solid choice!
The fish stew kit also came generously loaded with fish heads, clams, and bean sprouts. We threw in some ramyeon noodles and boiled it down properly. It's basically a crime not to eat the fish stew... Since they give it to you free of charge, definitely add it on.
Is Yeongjae Susan worth it for gizzard shad at Garak Market?

If you're like me and want fall's seasonal gizzard shad along with other sashimi like flounder and red seabream, I think it's worth trying the Jeongwangchamhoe at Yeongjae Susan in Garak Market :) I need to go get gizzard shad sashimi one more time before fall ends 🤭🍂
