Why Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is a famous Yongsan tteokbokki restaurant

Today I'm sharing an honest review of my visit to Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch, well known as a Yongsan tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) spot. I'd wanted to go for ages, and this time I finally got the chance. Bottom line up front: it exceeded expectations, and I completely understood why tteokbokki fans have loved this place for so long.

Getting to Hyeonseonine from Sinyongsan Station, plus parking

Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is easy to find — just walk a short way down the alley after exiting Sinyongsan Station (Line 4) Exit 6. Once you're in the alley, a distinctive tall chimney marks the spot, so even those with no sense of direction shouldn't have trouble.

There's no dedicated parking lot, though, so if you're driving, I'd recommend checking a nearby paid parking lot before you go. It's so close to the subway that I'd honestly recommend taking public transit instead!

At the entrance you're greeted by a CatchTable waitlist kiosk, an easy-to-use order kiosk, and a neatly arranged self-serve bar.

What the Hyeonseonine dining room feels like, and how fast tables turn

The dining room isn't huge, but because tteokbokki turns over quickly, tables open up fast even with a wait. The interior was kept clean overall, so eating there was pleasant.

What satisfied me most was how well-stocked the self-serve bar was. Besides pickled radish, soy sauce, salt, and ladles, it's generously stocked with aprons and fried batter.

When you're eating tteokbokki, sauce tends to splash on your clothes, so having aprons neatly set out was a thoughtful touch I appreciated. And best of all, the crispy fried batter you can freely sprinkle into the sauce was available unlimited at the self-serve bar — I loved that!

What the mild tteokbokki tastes like for two people who can't take heat

My friend and I are both weak with spicy food, so we ordered mild without hesitation. If I had to describe it in one word: it tasted like the nostalgic flavor from the stationery-shop snack stalls near school as a kid, with a bit of a tingly kick added.

Personally, I don't love tteokbokki that's overly sweet since it gets tiresome fast, but this one had a sweet base with a clean, subtle spiciness running through it that suited my taste perfectly. The balance between mild sweetness and gentle heat was excellent.

For reference, the rice cakes here are soft wheat rice cakes that soak up the sauce well, and rice cake makes up a much bigger share than fish cake. If you prefer rice cakes over fish cakes, this combination will satisfy you more!

Verdict and visiting tips for Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch

Hyeonseonine's tteokbokki had that spicy yet savory signature sauce flavor down perfectly. The chewy texture of the rice cakes paired so well with the sauce that I never got tired of it, even to the last bite. Dunking the crispy fried batter from the self-serve bar into the tteokbokki sauce is a must-try treat!

If you're near Yongsan or Sinyongsan Station craving proper bunsik (Korean snack food) or spicy tteokbokki, I strongly recommend Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch. The wait can get long during evening peak hours, so going a bit early or planning for some wait time will make the visit much smoother. I'll definitely be back the next time I'm craving tteokbokki!
