Mapo café in Seoul for hojicha pudding and a Chuseok family outing

With Chuseok right around the corner, I was looking for a big Hongdae café I could take my family to, and ended up at Naemyeonui Balgyeon (내면의 발견, literally "discovery of the inner self"). Kind of a unique name, right? Haha. The café uses three floors including the rooftop, and each floor has a different concept, so it's genuinely fun just to walk around and look.

Where is Naemyeonui Balgyeon in Mapo, and what are its hours?

Naemyeonui Balgyeon is at 53 Worldcup-buk-ro 5-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul (Seogyo-dong 460-2). It's open weekdays 12:00–19:00 and Saturday–Sunday 12:00–20:00.

The rooftop garden is for looking around, and drinks are only served on the first and second floors. Meeting rooms are also available for rent separately.

Naemyeonui Balgyeon menu and coffee bean cards

Next to the first-floor counter there's a whole wall of coffee bean cards. From the Summer Blend 2026 to decaf and Geisha beans, each card lists the origin, farm, altitude and processing method — haha.

The desserts are displayed as models, so it's easy to pick just by looking. The chestnut decoration on top felt very autumn. There's also a Naver review event notice posted next to it, so check the details in store!

A different concept on every floor at Naemyeonui Balgyeon

There's a floor guide painted on the first-floor wall. The first floor is Bare, the second floor has Fill, Still, and Flow, and the rooftop is the inner garden. The wall carries the title '4 Ways to Find Your Own Small Forest,' with a short description for each space, so I toured them in that order.

Right now it's the second season, 'Page 2. Rest.' Inside the Flow space there's an explanation on the wall saying the motif comes from Hye-won, the main character of the film Little Forest, who stops city time and returns to her hometown to care for herself. Next to it hang two wooden panels engraved with the building's floor plans.

First floor: Bare

The wall text says the reason we leave the city for nature is probably for the sake of peace, and hopes that after staying in this small forest inside Naemyeonui Balgyeon, you'll return with a calm mind. True to that, the first floor's Bare room is kept empty. In the middle sits a moss-covered tree stump, surrounded by wooden box chairs topped with round cushions. White round tables are scattered between them, and the large windows make the room bright.

On one side, wooden tables and chairs sit on a brown carpet, with a projector video playing on the wall. It's a good spot to sit quietly.

Second floor: Fill

The space right at the top of the stairs is Fill. The wall text is fun — it says just as crops that endure the cold winter outdoors develop a sharper flavor and aroma, you should feel the moment rest fills you and makes you sturdier. The floor is covered in gravel, with a small tree planted on a moss hill.

Wooden box benches and white stools are set out, and a big window is wide open, letting the breeze in directly. Outside the window, sycamore leaves fill the view.

Second floor: Still

Still is a small room. The wall text says that when you can't go any further, maybe you need a moment to pause and regroup, and that this room recreates an era that once embraced you. Inside there's a yellow lampshade stand, an old CRT television, a low bookshelf stacked with magazines, and a red carpet on the floor. Another guest had already arrived that day, so I only peeked in from the entrance.

Second floor: Flow

Flow is described as a space that gathers fragments of moments when you were so absorbed in something you loved that you lost track of time. Black desk lamps sit one by one along a long wooden bar table, and sycamore trees fill the view through the windows. The floor here is also covered in gravel.

The bookshelf holds books and design magazines, so it's a good spot to spend time alone too. I went by myself that day and sat right down with no wait at all.

The rooftop at Naemyeonui Balgyeon is called the 'inner garden.' Going up, you first pass through a dark corridor with wave-patterned sand on the floor. A small TV is turned on, and opening the door at the end leads straight into the garden. Spaces like this are exactly why touring the place is so fun.

The rooftop inner garden, and why it suits a Chuseok family outing

Up on the rooftop of Naemyeonui Balgyeon is a garden laid with stone paths, gravel and grass. The sky opens up above, a large rusted steel structure stands in the middle, and there's a perforated metal sculpture off to one side. White benches and stools are scattered around for sitting and resting, and it looked like a perfect spot for kids to wander along the stone paths. It would be a nice place to bring parents and kids during the Chuseok holiday.

One thing to note though — there's a sign that says 'please enjoy drinks on the 1st and 2nd floors.' The rooftop is for strolling and looking around, and drinking has to happen downstairs.

Meeting rooms are available to rent too

Naemyeonui Balgyeon is a café, but it also has meeting rooms available for separate rental. If you're looking for a spot near Hongdae for a small gathering or meeting, keep this in mind.

How did the iced americano and hojicha pudding taste?

I ordered an iced americano and a hojicha pudding. They bring the bean card out on the tray with your drink, and mine was the Summer Blend 2026.

It's a blend of Colombia Pioneer Honey and Ethiopia Guji Momora Washed, and the card listed jasmine, peony, lime, lychee and blueberry as the notes. There was no acidity, so it went down easy!

The pudding wasn't the soft, jiggly kind you'd usually imagine — it was more like a bread pudding. Bacon is added on top, and it balanced the aroma and flavor of the hojicha (roasted green tea) nicely, which made it pair really well with coffee. The cream wasn't too sweet either, so if you're visiting with your parents, ordering one to share would probably go down well, haha.

The atmosphere inside Naemyeonui Balgyeon

There were quite a few foreign guests, and it felt like a place locals drop by comfortably and often. Because the space is large and split across floors, it didn't feel crowded even with people around. I liked that there were separate seating areas whether you come alone or in a group.

Final verdict on Naemyeonui Balgyeon

Even among the big cafés in Hongdae, Naemyeonui Balgyeon stands out simply as a place worth seeing. Touring the four spaces described on the walls in order, then heading up to the rooftop garden, turns into one whole course. It's a nice outing to take the family to during Chuseok, and with meeting rooms available for rent too, there are quite a few ways to use the place. Just remember that drinks are only for the 1st and 2nd floors.

Even going alone, the time flew by just from looking around.
