Seongsu Station gyukatsu lunch with Isigny butter: Gyuen Dang
In short
Gyuen Dang Seongsu Main Branch is a gyukatsu (Japanese-style beef cutlet) restaurant on the second floor of a building on Yeonmujang 7-ga-gil, near Seongsu Station in Seoul. The tenderloin gyukatsu costs 24,000 won and arrives raw, so each piece is grilled to your preferred doneness on a personal tabletop grill and eaten with Isigny butter, sauce and wasabi. After once queuing two and a half hours for gyukatsu in Hongdae, eating it this comfortably in Seongsu is the best part of the meal.

From a two-and-a-half-hour Hongdae line to gyukatsu in Seongsu
Back in college I followed a friend who loved hunting down good restaurants and ended up waiting two and a half hours in Hongdae just to eat gyukatsu (Japanese-style beef cutlet) once. Gyukatsu was at peak trend then, so the line was truly insane — I still remember feeling defeated before I'd even taken a bite.
Compared to that, it's a good world these days... back in my day, blah blah... anyway, now you can eat gyukatsu this good comfortably in Seongsu too! This time I visited a Seongsu gyukatsu restaurant, Gyuen Dang Seongsu Main Branch.

Where Gyuen Dang Seongsu Main Branch is and what the room feels like
Gyuen Dang Seongsu Main Branch is on the 2nd floor at 10 Yeonmujang 7-ga-gil, Seongdong-gu, Seoul. It's close to Seongsu Station, so it's a good option when you're looking for a lunch spot in Seongsu.
The restaurant is on the second floor, and once inside the vibe is calmer than expected. Gyukatsu itself isn't an awkward dish to eat alone, so this seemed like a solid pick for office workers looking for a Seongsu Station lunch spot too. Above all, the staff were kind, which made for a great first impression walking in.

The interior is divided into sections, so there were quite a lot of seats.

Gyuen Dang menu and prices
Gyuen Dang's signature dish is of course the gyukatsu at ₩24,000. There's also striploin gyukatsu at ₩19,000, omurice, hamburg omurice, steak don, tsukune don, potato curry, yatsuyatsu udon, and more.
It's not just a gyukatsu-only place — there's quite a variety of Japanese menu options, so I figured it'd be easy to pick something even with a group. The omurice looked amazing too... but since it was my first visit, I went with the classic gyukatsu.

Tenderloin gyukatsu, 24,000 won: grilling each piece on your own grill
Gyuen Dang's tenderloin gyukatsu is ₩24,000. Crispy outside, vividly pink inside! It had been a while since I'd had gyukatsu, and the real fun of it is grilling each piece to your liking on a personal tabletop grill!

It's better to grill it lightly rather than cook it all the way through. Once it's on the grill, the surface sizzles and slowly changes color.
Grilling it yourself is oddly fun haha. Grill a piece, chat, then oops, flip it.

The shredded cabbage that comes with the gyukatsu was great too. Fried food can get a little heavy partway through, but the crisp cabbage refreshes your palate in between bites. With rice and soup included, it's a very filling meal.

How to eat Gyuen Dang's gyukatsu: butter, sauce and wasabi
At Gyuen Dang there are several ways to enjoy the gyukatsu. They give you Isigny butter — this is the first gyukatsu place I've been to that offers butter!

Grill it with a bit of butter on top and you get beef plus butter. Need I say more?

Gyukatsu is delicious as is, but grilling it lightly on the tabletop grill brings out a great combination of crispy breading outside and warm, tender meat inside.

Rather than grilling everything at once, you grill one or two pieces at a time as you eat, which means it stays warm all the way through.

There's also sauce and wasabi on hand to mix in as you like, so you can switch up the flavor bit by bit even within a single plate.
How do you check if it's done? Just press on it lightly lol, going by feel... if it's not done yet, just put it back on.
My personal favorite is definitely the wasabi.

Why Gyuen Dang works for lunch near Seongsu Station
Me, once waiting over two hours with a friend in Hongdae just to eat gyukatsu... I want to tell that version of myself: you'll be able to eat as much as you want soon enough.
It had been a while since I had gyukatsu, and there's fun in grilling each piece to exactly how you like it, plus the staff were kind, which made the whole meal comfortable. I think I'll think of this place again on a day I'm craving something a bit different from my usual Seongsu go-tos.
If you're looking for a lunch spot near Seongsu Station or you love the combo of crispy breading and tender beef, stop by Gyuen Dang Seongsu Main Branch, a Seongsu gyukatsu restaurant! Recommended. 👍👍👍
