Incheon Nonhyeon Japanese restaurant with wasabi-free sushi: Hongdae

In short

Hongdae Gureume Incheon Nonhyeon Branch is a Fukuoka-concept Japanese restaurant on the 2nd floor of the Iflex Building in Nonhyeon-dong, Namdong-gu, Incheon, open for 10 years. A family lunch at Hongdae Gureume covered the duldul sushi set served without wasabi, a 350-hour aged Korean pork loin katsu set, and a Korean-style pork belly chashu ramen with seven slices of chashu. With Nonhyeon Station 5 minutes away on foot, parking in the building and kids' chairs, Hongdae Gureume is an easy lunch stop with children.

Introducing Hongdae Gureume, located in Nonhyeon-dong, Namdong-gu, Incheon.

This is a place in Incheon where you can feel a bit of Fukuoka, Japan, with a wide variety of Japanese menu items. It's great for dining alone, or visiting with kids or a partner in different combinations. And since parking is available in the building and it's just a 5-minute walk from Incheon Nonhyeon Station, it's a genuinely popular spot with really, really good accessibility.

Where is Hongdae Gureume Incheon Nonhyeon Branch, and how long is the wait?

The restaurant opens at 11:30 AM, but by around noon a wait is basically guaranteed at this popular Nonhyeon spot in Incheon. It's on the 2nd floor of the Iflex Building — I'm honestly amazed how everyone manages to find their way here.

Despite being on the 2nd floor, this restaurant has held its ground in Incheon Nonhyeon for 10 years. Its walk-to-Fukuoka concept suits it well, and you can taste a variety of Japanese dishes personally researched and cooked by a head chef with 25 years of experience, trained at Hattori Nutrition College in Japan.

Entrance of Hongdae Gureume with a Japan-travel atmosphere

Walking through the entrance brings back memories of all the places I visited on my trip to Fukuoka, Japan — it's confusing enough to make you wonder if you're in Incheon or Japan.

On a day when you're craving Japan, having a delicious meal at Hongdae Gureume can feel like a brief trip there.

Hongdae Gureume menu and prices

Hongdae Gureume's signature dish is Kumamoto-style ramen, where a rich, deeply simmered broth is enhanced with kuromayu made from Uiseong black garlic, giving it a deep, intense flavor. You can also choose between Fukuoka-style and Korean-style ramen depending on your taste — a great place to visit whenever you're craving ramen after a trip to Japan.

There's also the signature spoonable sushi, where fresh salmon and tuna are served with sushi rice, all scooped up in one spoonful.

Depending on your party, there are solo sets pairing ramen with a rice ball or ramen with sushi, and for couples, there are combo sets pairing ramen with sushi or ramen with the spoonable sushi set, letting you enjoy Hongdae Gureume's popular menu items together.

You can order via kiosk, but the menu board also has photos with descriptions, so choosing isn't too difficult.

Eating at Hongdae Gureume with a child: the full order

They reportedly sell over 30,000 bowls of ramen a year. Besides the kid-friendly katsu, the assorted sushi set — great for kids like Deunsol who's just getting into sushi — includes egg, inari, shrimp and salmon.

Last time, the 3-piece pork cutlet set felt like too much, so this time I ordered the loin katsu set instead.

It's Korean pork aged for 350 hours, giving it a crispy texture with thick, hearty meat — perfect for a kids' menu item.

Duldul sushi set, served without wasabi

Introduction of the duldul sushi set menu

Great for eating solo or sharing, the duldul ("two by two") sushi set comes with salmon x2, sweet shrimp x2, raw shrimp x2, inari sushi x2, and egg sushi x2 — a good order if you love shrimp or are ordering sushi for kids.

The salmon and shrimp were fresh, and since there was no wasabi, the kids could eat it happily.

The sweet shrimp and raw shrimp took a bit longer to eat, but—

Korean-style pork belly chashu ramen with 7 slices

Korean-style pork belly chashu ramen topped with chashu slices

This one has a Korean-style spicy tonkotsu broth, bean sprouts, and seven slices of pork belly chashu, topped with a seasoned egg and scallion. There were more noodles than expected too, enough that one bowl might be a stretch for an adult woman on her own. Pair this with onigiri or sushi and it might not even be that budget-friendly a lunch after all!

The most basic version is the Fukuoka style, and this one adds spice on top of that. If you also love garlic, I'd recommend the Kumamoto style.

With such a wide menu and every basic dish being delicious, it's hard not to agonize over what to order. This has been my review of Hongdae Gureume, a great all-around Nonhyeon, Incheon spot to visit with coworkers, kids, or other adults.
