Seongdong, Seoul café with laptop window seats on a rainy day: Mellows

In short

Mellows is a Sanghamokjang soft serve café in a Seongdong, Seoul alley, walkable from Ttukseom Station. On a rainy day, the writer sat at the window seat, ate peach and matcha soft serve with a decaf americano, and even got some homework done, and when mood lighting turned on around 7pm the whole vibe changed. It's a dessert café by day and a cocktail-and-highball spot by night.

Today I'm bringing you a review of Mellows, a Seongsu dessert café I found in an alley near Seoul Forest, haha. I heard they do Sanghamokjang soft serve, so I had to check it out! It's within walking distance of Ttukseom Station.

I got off at Ttukseom Station and walked a bit, and the sign painted big on the brick wall really stood out even from the alley. With a light shining on it from above, the lettering was even easier to see. Doesn't it look pretty?!

It was raining the day we went, but they have outdoor tables too, so it seems like it'd be nice to sit outside on a sunny day.

Once you step inside, there's a space that isn't that big!! It felt cozy with a nice atmosphere. There were about 6 tables, I think. Around 6 or 7pm, they put out lighting like a bar. We sat at a window seat and ate while watching the rain fall on the alley outside, haha.

Each ice cream flavor is posted on the wall. I gave it a look before ordering. It said all of them use Sanghamokjang OM10 organic milk as the base. It was my first time seeing a place that even lists the milk used in the ice cream base, haha!!

The menu and what we ordered

Menu board for coffee and soft serve
List of soft serve flavors on the menu

The menu is basically coffee and soft serve. All the soft serve is milk-based!! In the evening they also sell alcoholic drinks. I originally planned to just get plain milk ice cream, but there were so many flavors I got stuck deciding. So I ordered matcha from the basic flavors and peach from the fruit flavors. I wanted strawberry but it was sold out that day, so I went with peach instead. I was worried I'd get cold eating ice cream, so I ordered a hot coffee too. Here's what we ordered—!!

  • Peach soft serve ₩4,500
  • Matcha soft serve ₩4,000
  • Americano (decaf) ₩2,800
Two ice creams and a coffee on a tray

They bring it out on a tray like this.

Peach soft serve

Peach first! It comes topped with big chunks of peach flesh. I'm usually someone who only eats plain milk ice cream, but the fruit wasn't mushy like canned peaches — it had bite, and I kept reaching for more. Up close it looks like this.

Matcha soft serve

The matcha comes sprinkled with matcha crunch on top and a rolled wafer stick stuck in. I thought the color looked too much like syrup, but it was delicious!!! The matcha flavor felt strong. I'm glad I ordered this instead of just plain milk ice cream.

If you look at the cup from the side, you can see it's layered. The matcha cup has granola at the very bottom. Don't just scoop from the top — dig down to the granola too!! It tastes much better when the crunch and granola mix together in a bite.

A window seat good for laptop work, and the mood after 7pm

The window seat was good enough to sit with a laptop open, so I got some assignment work done, haha. I also kept dipping the wafer stick in between.

Around 7pm, they started turning on mood lighting one by one. It was surprising how different the atmosphere became compared to the daytime. Turns out they also sell cocktails and highballs in the evening.

Rice puffs given as a complimentary service

They even gave us rice puffs as a service, haha. It felt nice getting them when I wasn't expecting it.

We only had ice cream and left, but next time I want to come back around evening time. What started as a trip for one soft serve ended up showing me the evening mood too, haha. If you're looking for a Seongsu dessert café, I think Mellows is worth a visit.
