Today I'm sharing my visit to Obeumua Hongdae Branch, a go-to spot for layered cuts in Hongdae.

Obeumua Hongdae Branch is a cut, perm, dye and clinic hair salon located 150m from Hongik University Station Exit 1, about a 5-minute walk from the subway station. The salon is tucked inside an alley, and since there are a lot of salons in that alley, you'll need to look carefully to find the right one >_<
My hair had been left untouched and shaggy since a perm months ago. Between a busy schedule and putting off the salon over and over, I finally set an appointment on a day I got off work early and visited Obeumua Hongdae Branch!
Once you spot the Obeumua signboard listing cut, perm, dye and clinic, look for the entrance on the right and head upstairs.
Going up to the 2nd floor gives off the feeling that a pretty accessory shop is about to appear ✨
The poster styled like flowing hair was really tasteful too. Which got me suddenly curious about what 'Obeumua' even means, haha. Apparently 'Obe' is French for 'dawn' or 'beginning,' and 'mua' means 'wave pattern' or 'soft sheen.' It's meant to evoke a style and beauty that glow softly like dawn light — cool name, cool meaning, right? 🫢
Inside Obeumua Hongdae Branch: white-toned interior and welcome
Walking in, the staff at Obeumua Hongdae Branch greeted me warmly. You know how if a salon is unfriendly you just never go back? Everyone at Obeumua was so kind that I felt good even before getting my hair done ^_^
At the desk there were products like hair oil, cream and shampoo for sale, and the hair oil was pretty tempting. Maybe I'll buy it once I finish the one I'm using now… 🫢
There was a big cabinet near the entrance, so storing my bag was easy, and Choi (the writer) got changed into a gown and was shown to a seat.
The interior is spacious and clean, right? You know how they say salon mirrors are brutally honest, haha — but thanks to Obeumua's white-toned interior and soft, pretty lighting, even the mirror felt flattering!
The window seats were nice, the mirror seats were nice — overall a clean space that didn't feel intimidating to visit.
Consultation: a layered cut that keeps length before wedding photos
Choi visited Obeumua Hongdae Branch today to turn shaggy long hair into a layered cut. I wanted to cut off a lot, but since I have wedding photos in December, I needed to keep a reasonable length while thinning out just the right amount of layers.
When I explained this to the designer, she understood right away and told me clearly that she'd cut both the length and the layers just right. That gave me a lot of confidence.

Shampoo with a scalp massage, then the cut
Before the cut, they shampooed my hair first. The shampoo room and lighting were so pretty.
The staff member doing the shampoo kept checking if anything felt uncomfortable, and gave me a scalp massage that was so relaxing I nearly fell asleep. Absolutely the best. After my hair was dried, the cut began. Two people blow-dried my hair at once, so it was incredibly fast.
The cutting went quick and clean. As the length got shorter, it felt so refreshing.

Her hands moved fast but the layered cut was still done carefully, and I ended up with a pretty style at just the right length. So much cleaner!
The blow-dry was styled beautifully too, and it was exactly the length I wanted.
The frizz was gone and my hair felt so much lighter — had to snap a photo on the way out ✨ The face-framing pieces were cut nicely too, so even tied up my hair looked pretty.
