Jeju café for bojagi-wrapped omegi-tteok gifts: Suragan Tteokbang

In short

Suragan Tteokbang is a rice-cake café on Noyeon-ro in Jeju, Jeju, where shoppers can choose omegi-tteok (Jeju mugwort rice cakes) individually or in gift boxes. I ordered several mixed-flavor sets and loved the individual wrapping, bojagi option, and pleasantly not-too-sweet chew. Verdict: Suragan Tteokbang is a lovely choice for travel gifts or thank-you presents.

Suragan Tteokbang Jeju omegi-tteok gift set

Suragan Tteokbang on Jeju's Noyeon-ro

It is right along Noyeon-ro, not far from Jeju Airport, so getting there was very easy.

The neatly kept sign stood out even from a distance, so although it was my first visit, I found it easily without getting lost.

As soon as I stepped inside, the gentle nutty aroma of rice cakes filled the shop and instantly lifted my mood.

Everything was kept exceptionally clean, and the neatly displayed products were so pleasingly arranged that I felt comfortable browsing the whole time.

Omegi-tteok gift-set options and prices

There are a few signature snacks I always make sure to pick up when I visit Jeju, and Jeju omegi-tteok is one I absolutely stop by to buy.

Omegi-tteok, a signature Jeju travel snack

This time, I visited Suragan Tteokbang (수라간떡방) after hearing that its selection and packaging were excellent. As soon as I entered, I could see packaging samples and many kinds of rice cakes; I loved the wide range of choices, from individual pieces to tidy boxed sets.

Individual pieces were an easy ₩1,000 each. Gift-friendly packs were priced at ₩6,000 for 5, ₩11,000 for 10, and ₩22,000 for 20, so it was easy to buy according to what I needed.

Jeju omegi-tteok gift-set assortment

I ordered several Jeju omegi-tteok gift sets with generous assortments so I could give them casually to people around me.

When I opened the box, each rice cake was individually wrapped, which made them hygienic and convenient to carry around and eat. There was also a subtle bojagi (traditional Korean wrapping cloth) service option, so they looked perfectly suitable as a thoughtful gift for a more formal occasion, too.

Red bean, nut, and soybean-powder omegi-tteok

Beyond the classic style coated generously in red-bean powder, it was especially appealing that I could combine varieties coated in nuts, soybean powder, black sesame, and more however I liked. I first bit into the classic red-bean omegi-tteok, and the texture of whole red-bean pieces on the outside really came through.

Classic omegi-tteok coated in whole red-bean pieces

It was not overly sweet and had a strong, comforting nutty flavor, making it the kind of taste you can keep eating without tiring of. Inside the chewy glutinous-rice wrapper with its mugwort aroma was a generous filling of sweet, soft red-bean paste. The sweetness was not excessive, giving it a clean flavor that people of all ages could enjoy without much divide in preference.

Nut-coated omegi-tteok varieties

The variety generously coated in nuts was full of savory flavor as sunflower seeds, peanuts, and walnuts crunched between my teeth. The increasingly nutty flavor and the chewy glutinous rice worked beautifully together, making it ideal as a dessert with tea or coffee.

Injeolmi-style omegi-tteok coated in soybean powder

The type coated in soybean powder like injeolmi (soybean-powder rice cake) had an outstanding mild flavor that I think would suit older palates, too. If you keep them frozen and let them thaw naturally for around 30 minutes before eating, the soft, chewy texture from when you first bought them comes right back. I could grab one or two as a breakfast substitute on my way to work, or

they were also handy for an afternoon snack when I felt peckish. The packaging was thoughtful and the flavors were well balanced, so everyone I gave them to was very happy, which made me feel proud as well.

Parking and final thoughts

With its refined, gentle flavors and luxurious packaging, this was a place where the care put into everything really came through.

I could use the roadside near the shop and the dedicated parking area, making it easy to stop briefly by car and pick up the rice cakes.

The sets are very generously put together for the price, and the individual wrapping makes them ideal for travel gifts or thank-you presents. Anyone looking for clean-tasting Jeju omegi-tteok will likely be pleased here.
