Jeju Dongmun Market oranda stall: 20-piece gift box, Cheongchuni

Whenever I travel to Jeju, there's one place I always stop by on the very first day: Dongmun Market! The first day of a Jeju trip is for eating good food and picking out gifts for friends and family, so as soon as we arrived, we headed straight to Dongmun Market.

We had a bowl of pork noodle soup nearby first, then headed to the market to help digest. Since it was evening, there were all kinds of food stalls, and some spots even had fire shows going on with the food, so it was fun just walking through and watching. Both tourists and locals were enjoying the food, so the whole market had a lively vibe. It's fun to watch and fun to eat, which makes it a great stop on day one of a Jeju trip.

Since we'd already eaten dinner, we decided to look for gifts first instead of food. But our little one, Jjoni, said "I want to buy a gift for my teacher!" the moment we got to the market, and went looking for a dol hareubang (stone grandfather statue). Haha, so cute. I laughed for a while watching Jjoni try to personally pick out a gift for their teacher.

I also wandered around looking for a Jeju dessert to give to friends. And then something caught my eye by chance. Oranda!

Where is Cheongchuni Oranda in Jeju's Dongmun Market?

The place we visited was Cheongchuni Oranda Dongmun Market Main Branch Tapdong. Cheongchuni Oranda has two locations — the Dongmun Market branch and the Seogwipo Olle Market branch — so you can visit whichever is closer depending on your itinerary.

If you're driving, we parked at the Dongmun Traditional Market public parking lot. After parking, you just walk toward Dongmun Market, and once you're inside the market you'll hit the stretch with the night market and various food stalls. It took us about 3 minutes on foot from the parking lot to get into the market.

Inside the market, it's easy to find if you look for it this way: Cheongchuni Oranda is guided as being easy to reach from Gate 2 and Gate 9 of Dongmun Market. So if it's your first visit, instead of just hunting for the store on a map, it's much easier to go: Dongmun Market Gate 2 or Gate 9 → move deeper into the market → Cheongchuni Oranda.

Once you're inside, look for the Cheongchuni Oranda store and its orange-toned sign — it's easy to spot. Dongmun Market has alleys branching off in several directions, so it can be a bit confusing the first time you go. I'd recommend using Gate 2 or Gate 9 as your reference point.

A Dongmun Market gift that isn't omegi rice cake: why oranda?

When you think of Dongmun Market gifts, omegi rice cake, tangerine tarts, or Jeju fruit usually come to mind first. That's what I had in mind too — until I spotted a shop selling oranda while wandering the market.

But it was a little different from the oranda I knew. Round donut-shaped oranda, the more familiar shape of oranda, and even gwajul! The shapes and flavors were so varied that I thought, 'Oh, this is kind of special.'

In front of the shop, several kinds of oranda were set out for sampling. That's exactly the kind of thing you can't just walk past, haha. As I tried them one by one, I thought, "Wait, was oranda always this soft?"

Nothing like the rock-hard oranda I remembered

The oranda I remembered was on the harder side and tended to stick to your teeth as you chewed. But Cheongchuni's was different from the very first bite. Crunchy on the outside, but instead of shattering hard, the inside was soft and moist.

Chewy yet crisp, with a sweetness that lingered in your mouth without being overwhelming. Since it's handmade fresh in the shop, the texture felt quite different from the oranda I was used to. Not hard, but soft — that felt like Cheongchuni Oranda's biggest defining feature.

And there wasn't just one flavor. Yuzu, Udo peanut, gamtae (sea moss), garlic (manong), and more — it was fun trying each one. I tasted them all before buying, and since each one tasted so different, it actually made choosing harder, haha.

It wasn't just oranda either — there were several kinds of gwajul (Korean fried rice cookies) too. The types I found were white rice gwajul, brown rice gwajul, buckwheat gwajul, and steamed rice gwajul.

Even people who find overly sweet snacks a bit much could find something to pick here. I went in just to look at oranda but ended up browsing the gwajul too — a nice bonus.

Once I tried each flavor, it was hard to settle on just one. So I bought a 20-piece set — five different flavors, five pieces each. Everything came individually wrapped, so it's easy to take one out at a time, and it seemed like a clean way to hand pieces out to different people too.

There were a few reasons I thought oranda made a good Jeju gift. First, since each piece is individually wrapped, it's hygienic to share, and since the flavors vary, whoever receives it can pick based on their own taste.

More than anything, I liked that it was a little different from the typical Jeju souvenir. Omegi rice cake or tangerine desserts are great too, of course, but this time I got to gift something a bit more unusual: oranda personally picked out at Jeju's Dongmun Market.

Oranda also isn't a heavy or bulky gift, so it wasn't a burden to pack in the suitcase. It seemed like a good thing to hand out one piece at a time to family, friends, or coworkers after the trip. Individually wrapped, lots of flavors, and the special touch of having been picked out directly at Jeju's Dongmun Market!

But honestly, I didn't buy oranda just as a gift, haha. When you're driving around Jeju for long stretches, you sometimes want a little snack. So I picked out something for us to eat too.

This time, the bulk-packed products had better value, and since I wanted to try a variety of flavors, I went with the square-shaped 'square oranda.' One piece is ₩3,500, or three for ₩10,000! We picked three flavors right away. I bought them to eat one at a time in the car while traveling, and being able to mix flavors made it even better.

🍋 Yuzu oranda — yuzu's charm is its brightness, as always! As you chew the sweet oranda, a subtle yuzu fragrance spreads and freshens up your mouth. Crisp but not hard, with a soft chew and that bright citrus scent — a flavor that went really well with coffee or tea in the car.

🥜 Udo peanut oranda — if you like nutty flavors, this is the one. The first bite hits you with a deep, roasted peanut flavor. Sweet oranda meets nutty peanut for a distinct sweet-and-savory combo. It also matched the taste of Jjoni's mom, who loves nuts.

🧄 Garlic (manong) oranda — the most unusual of the three! A subtle garlic flavor comes through, reminiscent of garlic bread. The sweetness of the oranda combined with garlic's savory, fragrant note made it clearly different from any oranda I'd had before. If you personally enjoy unique flavors like this, it's worth trying at least once.

How to pick your own oranda gift at Dongmun Market

On the first day of the Jeju trip, while stopping by Dongmun Market to pick gifts, we discovered oranda! I had originally been thinking of omegi rice cake or tangerine desserts for this trip, but thanks to stumbling on Cheongchuni Oranda in Dongmun Market, I ended up choosing a slightly more special Jeju gift.
