Seomyeon tonkatsu at the 5pm reopen, Busan: Hets Jeonpo Branch

In short

Hets Jeonpo Branch is a tonkatsu restaurant on Jeonpo-daero in Busanjin, Busan, near Seomyeon, that splits its katsu menu by pork breed: Jeju black pork and YBD (Yorkshire-Berkshire-Duroc). Arriving right at the 5pm reopen after break time to avoid the wait, the writer ordered the Jeju black pork assorted katsu at 18,000 won and the YBD assorted katsu at 17,000 won side by side, and found the black pork smoky and rich while the YBD tasted leaner and cleaner. A loin loyalist going in, the writer was won over by the tenderloin at Hets Jeonpo Branch and plans to return.

How to get into Hets Jeonpo Branch without a wait

Hets Jeonpo Branch is on the 2nd floor, Unit 201, at 225 Jeonpo-daero, Busanjin-gu, Busan, open daily from 11:10 to 20:30 with break time from 15:30 to 17:00. We didn't want to wait, so we timed our visit for 5pm right when break time ends and they reopen.

Exterior entrance of Hets Jeonpo Branch

My boyfriend and I are on a mission lately, working our way through Busan's tonkatsu spots. Today's target: Hets, one of the famous names in Jeonpo! Last time we were out in Gwangalli he wanted to check out Hets but we ended up going somewhere else — then we found out there was a Jeonpo branch too, so here we are.

Inside Hets Jeonpo Branch: atmosphere and bar seating

The inside felt hip but clean. It's surprisingly bigger than it looks from outside. Like Tonshou or Jijeu, this place also has that square layout wrapping seats around the open kitchen. Seems like that's just how tonkatsu restaurants look these days.

Hets Jeonpo Branch menu and prices

The menu at Hets Jeonpo Branch is split by pork breed — black pork (Jeju black pork) and YBD (Yorkshire/Berkshire/Duroc).

  • Black pork (Jeju black pork) — Sang loin katsu ₩17,000 / Loin katsu ₩14,000 / Assorted katsu ₩18,000
  • YBD (Yorkshire/Berkshire/Duroc) — Sang loin katsu ₩16,000 / Tenderloin katsu ₩15,000 / Loin katsu ₩13,000 / Assorted katsu ₩17,000
  • Katsu sando — Loin ₩12,000 / Tenderloin ₩7,000
  • Sides — Chicken tenderloin 1pc ₩3,000 / Tenderloin 1pc ₩4,500 / Meat curry ₩3,000 / Boneless gara-age 2pc ₩2,000

The menu was a little unusual — split first by pork breed, black pork versus YBD. We were curious about both, so we decided to order one assorted set of each. Sadly the sang loin katsu was sold out for both breeds that day ;-; We went with the Jeju black pork assorted katsu (₩18,000) and the YBD assorted katsu (₩17,000)!

Tonkatsu sauce, kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi), rice, and a broth. The broth was rich with a slight kick — really good.

Jeju black pork assorted katsu, 18,000 won: smoky and rich

Hets Jeonpo's black pork assorted katsu is ₩18,000, a loin-plus-tenderloin set. It came out faster than expected, plated with pink salt, salad, hot mustard, and the katsu.

Cross-section of Jeju black pork assorted katsu loin and tenderloin

The surface looked lightly seared, like they'd hit it with a torch. They told us to try the first bite plain, no salt, and it was delicious! You could really taste how fresh the meat was, and it had a faint seasoning already on it. It was also surprising that the katsu had a smoky flavor — worked better than I expected.

A piece of smoky-charred black pork loin katsu

As always, the best part of the loin is the fattier back section. Nutty, with good chew, and amazing with wasabi. It can get a little heavy after a while, but the kkakdugi was there to save the day haha.

Salad with corn kernels and dressing

Loved that the salad dressing had corn kernels in it.

YBD assorted katsu, 17,000 won: how does it differ from black pork?

Looks the same, but isn't. This is the YBD assorted katsu (same composition) at ₩17,000.

YBD assorted katsu with loin and tenderloin

No smoky char on this one! The difference between black pork and YBD wasn't just the smoke — the meat itself felt a little different too. The tenderloins were similar, but the black pork loin felt a bit fattier, while the YBD was leaner (not dry, though). My boyfriend preferred the black pork, and since I can't handle too much fat, YBD was more my style. Nice that there's a choice for both preferences.

Tenderloin katsu with a juicy cross-section

A loin loyalist won over by the tenderloin, and a katsu sando next time

Honestly I'm always a loin person when it comes to tonkatsu, but Hets' tenderloin was seriously amazing...! You can tell just by looking at it. Soft, juicy... I want to eat it again just writing about it, ugh. So next time I go, I think I'll order the tenderloin.

Oh, and I heard their katsu sando is good too, so I'm curious about that. My place (humble brag) happens to be in delivery range for Hets, so my boyfriend and I already talked about ordering katsu sando next time friends come over.

Empty plate and leftover side dishes

As I've mentioned before, I'm not great with fried food, but with the kkakdugi and the fresh silbi kimchi on the side, I cleaned my whole plate. Everything about this was good~~ Tonkatsu rules, Hets rules~ Would definitely go back.
