Hanam ssambap restaurant with seafood ssamjang pot: Dolsoe Ssambap

In short

Dolsoe Ssambap is a ssambap (Korean lettuce-wrap rice) restaurant on the 2nd floor of a building on Misagangbyeonhangang-ro in Hanam, Gyeonggi. For dinner the writer ordered the Dolsoe spicy pork ssambap and chose the seafood version of the earthenware-pot ssamjang, which arrived as a full table with wrap vegetables, close to 12 side dishes, doenjang stew and steamed egg. A self-serve bar stocked with aprons, scissors and tongs, plus several baby high chairs, made Dolsoe Ssambap an easy choice for a family dinner.

Inside Dolsoe Ssambap: the self-serve bar and baby high chairs

The entrance of Dolsoe Ssambap has warm wood interior touches. Through the glass doors you could naturally see the spacious dining room, which gave a comfortable feeling even before stepping in, and the interior was tidy and clean, making for a pleasant start to the meal.

The tables were also spaced generously apart, so we could enjoy the meal comfortably without worrying too much about our surroundings.

There was a self-serve bar set up on one side of the restaurant. Wet wipes, cups, aprons, scissors, and tongs — everything you'd need for the meal — were freely available.

Being able to grab an apron yourself, especially handy when eating meat dishes, was convenient. There were also several baby high chairs ready, so families with young kids could dine comfortably too. It felt like real thoughtfulness for family customers.

The kitchen has an open layout, so you could see the food being prepared at a glance. Behind the counter, the dishware and cooking area were neatly organized, and overall it looked impressively clean.

On the wall was a sign telling the story of Dolsoe Ssambap and its food — about using fresh ingredients to prepare each table with care, which gave me more trust in the place.

Each table has a tablet, so we could take our time browsing the menu before ordering. This time we ordered the Dolsoe Spicy Pork Ssambap, which is cooked to order.

When you order the Dolsoe Spicy Pork Ssambap, you can choose your stone-pot ssamjang (dipping sauce) — mackerel or seafood. I went with the seafood ssamjang. After a short wait, a generous table arrived.

Dolsoe spicy pork ssambap: seafood ssamjang and wrap vegetables

The pork ssambap table was much more generous than I expected. The main dish, stir-fried spicy pork, was loaded with pork, onions, and green onions, all coated evenly in a mouthwatering sauce that made my mouth water just looking at it.

The wrap vegetables that came with it were impressive too. Lettuce and perilla leaves, plus a variety of other vegetables, were served generously, so it was fun to pick and choose according to taste. Kelp and cabbage wraps were also included, adding even more variety.

The seafood ssamjang that elevates the flavor of the ssambap was a highlight too — simmered with mussels, squid, and various vegetables, it was savory and rich with umami. The chewy seafood texture paired with the spicy pork made for an even more satisfying meal.

Placing a spoonful of rice, the stir-fried pork, and the ssamjang on a fresh wrap vegetable and taking a big bite, the crunchy vegetable, spicy pork, and savory sauce came together in perfect harmony. Being able to enjoy it with so many different vegetables made it even more satisfying.

Doenjang stew, steamed egg and the side dishes

The doenjang (soybean paste) stew had a savory broth that was easy to spoon up between bites, and the steamed egg was soft and moist, pairing nicely with the spicy pork.

Several side dishes were also neatly prepared. Seasoned bean sprouts, stir-fried seaweed stems, stir-fried fish cake, pickled onions, and cabbage salad were all easy to enjoy alongside the main dish, and overall the table felt well-balanced as a proper Korean spread.

Being able to mix and match the meat, wrap vegetables, ssamjang, and side dishes to taste meant it never got boring, and it was a healthy yet filling meal.

Which wrap vegetables and which two special ssamjangs?

On one side of the restaurant there was also a sign introducing the types of wrap vegetables and their benefits. They offer a variety including lettuce, perilla leaves, romaine, kale, red chard, chicory, cabbage, angelica, pumpkin leaves, and kelp.

Each one was introduced with its benefits — blood circulation, immune support, digestive health, stomach health, and more — which made it interesting to read through. The lineup may change by season, but being able to enjoy a variety of wrap vegetables evenly was impressive.

Dolsoe Ssambap's own special ssamjangs also caught my eye. The signature Dolsoe Seafood Ssamjang is simmered generously with squid, mussels, and various vegetables, known for its rich umami flavor. It's great not just as a wrap sauce with meat, but also mixed into warm rice, with a savory appeal.

The mackerel ssamjang, also introduced, was made with coarsely chopped mackerel flesh, cheongyang chili peppers, and various vegetables for a deep, rich flavor. The savoriness of the doenjang combined with the mackerel's nutty umami and the cheongyang chili's spicy kick would make it a hearty side for rice too. Since it's a signature sauce unique to Dolsoe Ssambap, I really want to try it next time.

I ended up going back for more wrap vegetables several times during the meal, that's how satisfying it was. Enjoying such a generous variety of vegetables left me feeling light and nourished after the meal.

Is Dolsoe Ssambap worth a dinner in Hanam Misa?

Overall, Dolsoe Ssambap stood out for its generous portions and fresh ingredients. From the carefully prepared side dishes and variety of wrap vegetables to the umami-packed Dolsoe Spicy Pork Ssambap, nothing felt lacking.

The atmosphere was comfortable enough for a family meal, a dinner with parents, or a gathering with friends. It also seemed like a good spot to visit on a day you want a quiet meal.

Parking in the building made it convenient to visit by car, and the location within walking distance of Misa Station was also a plus. Above all, being able to enjoy fresh wrap vegetables to your heart's content is what stuck with me most.

Next time I'd like to try other ssambap menu options too. This is a place I'd want to come back to whenever I'm craving a healthy, filling Korean meal. If you're looking for a good ssambap restaurant in Hanam Misa, it's worth a visit. 😊
