Side dishes and the free soft tofu stew

Side dishes including corn mayo salad and green onion kimchi

The side dishes include corn mayo salad, green onion kimchi, stir-fried fish cake, pickled onion, and garlic scapes. That green onion kimchi went really well with rice!

They bring out soft tofu stew right on the grill. Just let it simmer a bit before eating — it has a slight kick that pairs really well with the jjokgalbi. That mild spiciness really perks up your appetite. One bite with the soft, fluffy tofu — amazing.

Salt jjokgalbi for two, 34,000 won

Salt jjokgalbi for two is ₩34,000 (400g per person). One serving comes with about 6–7 pieces, and the first order of jjokgalbi requires a minimum of two servings.

Pre-cooked salt jjokgalbi for two with rice cake sticks

Rice cake sticks come alongside. The jjokgalbi at Suamgol Jjokgalbi Maeul, this Hanyang University Station favorite, comes pre-cooked to a nice golden brown, so you can dig in right away without waiting around for it to grill.

A meaty piece of salt jjokgalbi

The meat had more on the bone than I expected — every bite was chewy with a subtle juiciness, and the savory flavor built the more I chewed. Look at how plump those ribs are. They're seasoned with salt, but it's not salty or harsh — just right, letting the meat's natural flavor shine. I personally don't love strong seasoning, so the salt jjokgalbi was exactly my kind of thing.

Jjokgalbi spread out on the grill to warm

Since it's already fully cooked, you can eat it right away and just warm it gently on the grill. Spreading the jjokgalbi out on the grill made it look even more appetizing!

The staff cut both the bone and meat for us, which made it easy to eat. The salt jjokgalbi had a clean flavor with a subtle salty savoriness that kept me reaching for more.

Picking meat off the bone from jjokgalbi

As always, the meat right on the bone is the tastiest part! It seemed like it would go great with rice, so I decided to order a meal item too.

Retro lunchbox, 6,000 won

Retro lunchbox, ₩6,000.

Retro lunchbox with stir-fried kimchi and pink sausage

The retro lunchbox is best shaken up before eating, but I nearly spilled all the kimchi juice while shaking it, haha. Just mix it well and you're good. It had stir-fried kimchi, pink sausage, seaweed and a fried egg inside. (Sadly no stir-fried anchovies though.) Anyway, it had been a while since I had a retro lunchbox and it was genuinely delicious. It pairs really well with jjokgalbi too — recommend it as a side.

Close-up of jjokgalbi with plenty of meat on the bone

There was a generous amount of meat on the jjokgalbi bones, so it was fun to pick at, and each piece I pulled off had a clean, satisfying flavor.

Soft tofu stew and jjokgalbi on the grill

A bite of jjokgalbi, a bite of soft tofu stew — pure happiness.

A piece of salt jjokgalbi picked up for a bite

The salt seasoning is just right, so even eating a lot doesn't feel greasy or overwhelming — it goes down clean, with a subtle salty edge that keeps you coming back for more.

Jjokgalbi dipped into pickled onion sauce

Ordering tips: cooking time and pickled onion sauce

Quick tip: all the jjokgalbi at Suamgol Jjokgalbi Maeul, this Hanyang University Station favorite, comes pre-cooked, so it takes about 10–15 minutes to prepare. Dipping the jjokgalbi in the pickled onion sauce makes it even tastier. You can also ask staff for garlic and green chili peppers.

The extra order of garlic jjokgalbi for one

Garlic jjokgalbi, 18,000 won: how it compares with salt

So I ordered an extra serving of garlic jjokgalbi. Garlic jjokgalbi, one serving, ₩18,000 (400g).

Compared to the salt jjokgalbi, the garlic version at this Hanyang University Station favorite Suamgol Jjokgalbi Maeul has a sharper, slightly sweet garlic flavor that makes it taste richer overall. The garlic aroma was subtly infused throughout the meat, and the more I chewed, the more the savory, nutty flavor built up.

If the salt jjokgalbi is clean and simple, the garlic jjokgalbi feels a bit more appetite-grabbing thanks to that fragrant garlic. If you're a garlic lover, alternating between the two really highlights the difference and makes the meal even more enjoyable.
