Barabon Glasses Ilgwang New City Branch is an eyewear shop in Ilgwang, Gijang, Busan, where frames from the ₩10,000s to the ₩50,000s can be compared alongside lenses. The writer's younger sibling tried on several frames in person, then chose a frame in the ₩50,000 range plus a ₩50,000 blue-light-blocking lens, for about ₩100,000 in total. Barabon Glasses also stocks kids' Tomato Glasses and sunglasses, making it an easy stop for the whole family.

Millak-dong sashimi restaurant in Busan: seasonal set at The Bangpaje

The Bangpaje is a sashimi (raw fish) restaurant in Millak-dong, Busan, a short walk from Gwangalli Beach. Its seasonal sashimi set (제철한상세트) brought a mixed seafood platter, sashimi with the fish name labeled on each plate, and a spicy fish stew to finish, served in a second-floor private dining room with generously spaced tables. For a tidy, well-composed spread in an upscale setting with someone you care about, The Bangpaje is worth a return visit.

Gwang-an pocha bar in Busan: gizzard shad sashimi at Maenggu Pocha

Maenggu Pocha Gwang-an Main Branch is a retro pocha (Korean street-style bar) in Gwang-an, Suyeong, Busan. Two of us cleared a ₩35,000 plate of gizzard shad sashimi served with perilla leaf and onion and a ₩21,000 boneless dak-bokkeumtang (spicy braised chicken) made only with thigh meat, spending ₩72,000 in total. The food at Maenggu Pocha beat expectations, and the gizzard shad sashimi is the first thing to reorder next time.

Busan lash extensions for hooded eyes: Bitnaneun Lash Wax Skin, Hadan

Bitnaneun Lash Wax Skin is a lash, waxing and skin care studio near Hadan Station in Saha, Busan. The mascara lash extensions were set in length and curl to suit eyes whose lids cover much of the lash line, and with the studio's own lash serum applied, once-sparse lashes looked fuller and better defined. For extensions that can be worn either softly natural or sharply defined, Bitnaneun Lash Wax Skin in Hadan is a good choice.

Gwangalli Chinese restaurant for family Peking duck: Mirim Yangjang

Mirim Yangjang Gwangalli branch is a Chinese restaurant and bar with an exotic interior near Gwangalli Beach, on Gwanganhaebyeon-ro in Suyeong-gu, Busan. On a weekend visit, a family of three — a couple and their elementary-school son — shared a half order of Peking duck and coconut ice cream, wrapping the duck in thin wheat pancakes with scallion and cucumber strips, a style that suited the child's taste perfectly. For a special family meal in Gwangalli, Mirim Yangjang Gwangalli branch is a choice with no regrets.

Seasoned ribs and naengmyeon at a Gwangalli Korean BBQ, Myeongseung

Myeongseung Jeju Saenggogi is a Korean BBQ restaurant near Gwangalli in Suyeong, Busan, that grills Jeju black pork. On a return visit three months later, the writer ordered two servings of Jeju black pork belly (15,000 won per serving) plus two servings of the seasoned ribs that were sold out last time, along with naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles), soybean stew and rice. Ordering both cuts was the right call at Myeongseung Jeju Saenggogi: the pork belly goes with myeoljeot and bracken, while the seasoned ribs are made for rice and cold noodles.

Jungang-dong Station sashimi course in Busan: Ppong Sashimi B course

Ppong Sashimi is a course-meal sashimi restaurant on Chungjang-daero 5beon-gil, between Nampo-dong and Jungang-dong in Busan. Two diners ordered the assorted sashimi B course (60,000 won per person, for two) and worked through banchan, sushi, cold pork, tuna yukhoe, seafood, assorted sashimi, then a second round of tuna sashimi, beef hot pot, fried shrimp and cheese scallops, finishing with jiritang (clear fish soup) and albap (rice with roe). Ppong Sashimi is not raw fish alone — the hot dishes keep coming until you are completely full.

Haeundae sashimi restaurant with 500°C wood-fired mackerel, Busan

Haneobuui Godeungeosarang Haeundae is a mackerel sashimi restaurant a 5-minute walk from Haeundae Station in Busan. The writer ate mackerel sashimi cut fresh from the restaurant's large in-store tank alongside 500°C wood-fired grilled mackerel ordered for a friend who can't eat raw fish, and the doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) was just as satisfying. With its own parking lot, Haneobuui Godeungeosarang Haeundae works well for family meals or group dinners.

Steamed monkfish for two in Suyeong, Busan: Sintongyeong Agu Suyuk

Sintongyeong Agu Suyuk.Tang is a monkfish restaurant on Suyeongno 725beon-gil in Suyeong-gu, Busan. Out for a light, healthy meal with her older sister, the writer skipped the spicy agujjim and ordered the 50,000 won agu suyuk (steamed monkfish), which arrived as a full plate of tender fish, chewy collagen-rich cuts, bean sprouts and eomandungi (sea squirt) — easily enough for two. For anyone who likes clean-tasting seafood, Sintongyeong delivers on both flavor and portion size.

Samgyeopsal restaurant in Hwamyeong-dong, Busan: 700g set, Go Ok-hui

Go Ok-hui Hwamyeong Main Branch is a samgyeopsal (grilled pork belly) restaurant in Hwamyeong-dong, Buk-gu, Busan, where the kitchen grills every piece of meat before it reaches your table. Arriving with a 36-month-old right at the weekend 5pm opening, the writer ordered the set-medium tray, 700g for 58,500 won, and added doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) and two bottles of soju, while baby rice and fluffy steamed egg covered the toddler's meal. With no grilling to manage, both parents could sit and eat, which is why Go Ok-hui Hwamyeong Main Branch has become a place they have lost count of returning to.

Oreo cheesecake at Deokmi, a Gijang dessert café in Busan

Deokmi Gijang Branch is an ocean-view dessert café on Dongam-haean-gil in Gijang-gun, Busan, spread across two buildings, a main house and an annex. At Deokmi Gijang Branch I sat by the floor-to-ceiling windows with a dense handmade cheesecake on a cream cheese base, the signature royal vanilla bean latte made with syrup brewed in-house from natural Madagascar vanilla beans, an Americano and a strawberry latte. If you love cheesecake with an iced Americano, Deokmi Gijang Branch does the job.

Jeonpo pizza and pasta set for a weekday lunch date: Pickles

Pickles is a pizza and pasta restaurant in Jeonpo-dong, Busanjin, Busan, serving unusual pizzas like jambon-beurre and taco as part of set menus. On a weekday lunch visit, the set of half-and-half pizza (jambon-beurre & taco) with puttanesca pasta came with no wait, and one pizza plus one pasta was filling for two. For a Jeonpo lunch date with pizza that's off the usual list, Pickles is a solid choice.
