Suwon Station noodle restaurant with barley rice first: Daseon

Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch (다선칼국수 본점) is a 25-year-old kalguksu (knife-cut noodle) restaurant on Hyanggyo-ro, a 10-minute walk from Exit 8 of Suwon Station. This lunch was Daseon kal-nakji (noodles with octopus) for two at 32,000 won and a pork platter at 15,000 won, with warm barley rice brought out before the mains to eat with gochujang and dried radish. Between the noodles, octopus and boiled pork, Daseon Kalguksu fills a table fast and is worth it for a hearty meal near Suwon Station.

Dongtan noodle restaurant with make-your-own sujebi dough: Deungchon

Deungchon Shabu Kalguksu Gran Passage Branch is a shabu kalguksu (hot pot knife-cut noodle) restaurant on the 2nd floor of Gran Passage by Dongtan Lake Park in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi. A weekend visit at 7pm meant a 30-minute wait, and the table ordered spicy mushroom kalguksu for three with extra kalguksu noodles and a 3,000 won sujebi add-on that diners knead and tear by hand. Between the garlicky kimchi, the starch-thickened broth and the fried rice finish, Deungchon Shabu Kalguksu is a satisfying course for anyone who loves carbs.

Geomdan, Incheon katsu restaurant for a kids lunch: Gyeomson Donkatsu

Gyeomson Donkatsu Geomdan Branch is a Japanese-style premium katsu restaurant on Wanjeong-ro in Geomdan, Incheon, near Geomdan Intersection. With its own parking lot, baby chairs and a pet-friendly terrace, The Barbecue 051 is a solid pick when you want atmosphere along with your grilled pork on an Osiria trip.

Hanwoo sirloin and flat iron at a Jeonju butcher's shop: Hoseongjeong

Hoseongjeong Butcher's Restaurant is a butcher shop and grill house in Hoseong-dong, Jeonju, with no table setting fee. The writer took her mother there for hanwoo (Korean beef) sirloin, hanwoo buchaesal (flat iron), and mul naengmyeon (cold noodle soup), and the sirloin melted in the mouth with just a dip of salt. With soju at 2,000 won, beer at 2,500 won, and seaweed soup on the side, Hoseongjeong is an easy pick for a family meal out.

Sangam IT Tower restaurant for pumpkin kongguksu: Sangam Hoegwan

Sangam Hoegwan is a Korean restaurant specialising in kongguksu (cold soy milk noodles), in the basement food court of Sangam IT Tower in Mapo, Seoul. The writer ordered the pumpkin kongguksu dumpling set, the perilla oil mil-myeon dumpling set and a kimchijeon (kimchi pancake), and the pumpkin soy broth was sweet without any added sugar, so even her husband, who normally cannot eat kongguksu, took over her bowl. If you like a thick, nutty broth, the pumpkin kongguksu at Sangam Hoegwan is the one to order.

Hanam seafood braise restaurant, 60,000 won lunch for two: Appa Jjim

Appa Jjim Hanam Main Branch is a large seafood braise and stew restaurant on Wolho-ro in Hanam, Gyeonggi, near Hanam Pungsan Station and the Misa motorboat racing park. A family lunch here came to 60,000 won for two: braised half-dried pollock with radish greens (kodari-jorim, small) at 35,000 won, two orders of fragrant pot rice, an extra radish greens topping, and blanched cuttlefish at 15,000 won. Thick pollock fillets and a scorched-rice tea finish made it worthwhile, and the big private parking lot plus free coffee and ice cream corner suit both family meals and group dinners.

Ttukbang is a makchang (grilled pork intestine) and pork belly charcoal barbecue restaurant right in front of IM Bank Park in Goseong-dong, Buk-gu, Daegu. The whole family, children included, arrived right at opening and ordered 2 servings of Ttukbang makchang and 2 servings of salt-grilled pork belly, added another serving of makchang because it was so nutty and savory, then finished with jajang egg rice and kimchi noodle soup. With baby chairs and a self-serve side bar, Ttukbang is an easy choice for a family meal out with kids.

Seongnae-dong tonkatsu restaurant with katsuo udon: Katsu Monster

Mukho Port restaurant with boneless chicken stew: Mukho Sotbokkeumtang

Mukho Sotbokkeumtang is a chicken stew (sotbokkeumtang) restaurant on Ilchul-ro near Mukho Port in Donghae, Gangwon. Aewol sunset dinner: gukbap with rice on the side, Handam Guksu

Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch is a noodle and gukbap (rice soup) restaurant on the first floor at 33 Aewol-ro, Aewol-eup, Jeju, a five-minute walk from the Aewol café street and the Handam Coastal Trail. A family of four, half a year into living on Jeju, ate dinner there at sunset: extra-large dongchimi bibim guksu (chilled radish-water spicy noodles), salgogi gukbap (lean pork rice soup) with the rice served separately so it was easy to feed their child, handmade tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patties) and meat mandu (dumplings). With kids' tableware, a baby chair and a self-serve bar, Handam Guksu made for a satisfying dinner out with young children.

Masan hotpot restaurant with free sundae and sujebi: Yeongju Gopchang

Yeongju Gopchang Jeongol Masan Daetgeori Main Branch is a beef tripe hotpot restaurant on Wolyeong-dong 6-gil in Masanhappo-gu, Changwon, near Kyungnam University. One small beef tripe hotpot for two costs 29,000 won and comes with free sundae (Korean blood sausage) and sujebi (hand-torn dough) to drop into the broth, and the glass noodles were good enough to order an extra portion. The spicy broth at Yeongju Gopchang Jeongol also works well with a glass of soju.
