Mala lobster tail at Neukdaewa Yang, a Bupyeong skewer restaurant

Neukdaewa Yang is a lamb skewer and Chinese-style Asian restaurant on the 2nd floor of a building near Exit 8 of Gulpocheon Station, toward Lotte Mart, in Bupyeong, Incheon. On a Saturday lunch before overseeing an MMA fight, the writer ordered mala lobster tail (22,000 won), smashed cucumber (13,000 won), warm noodle soup (8,900 won), corn skewers (4,900 won) and extra garlic (1,000 won), then had the leftovers packed to go. Even without ordering lamb, the sides and skewers at Neukdaewa Yang made for a filling meal.

Oksan-dong pork belly restaurant for work dinners: Kkotdwaeji Sikdang

Kkotdwaeji Sikdang Gyeongsan Branch is a table-grilled pork belly restaurant on Seongam-ro in Oksan-dong, Gyeongsan. A couple ordered the mixed pork BBQ platter with a 3,000-won steamed egg and doenjang (soybean paste) rice with alcohol, served with 11 side dishes, and the staff even grilled the mustard leaf kimchi at the table. With wide group seating and a dedicated lot, Kkotdwaeji Sikdang Gyeongsan Branch works well for a Gyeongsan work dinner.

Sookmyung Station rice bowl restaurant: Goshi Goshi yukhoe bowl

Goshi Goshi Sookmyung Women's University Station Direct Branch is a Japanese-style rice bowl and pork cutlet restaurant a 5-minute walk from Exit 8 of Sookmyung Women's University Station in Yongsan, Seoul. On a weekday off, before a movie in Yongsan, the writer ordered the yukhoe (raw beef) rice bowl for 13,900 won and added a 3,900 won side of pork cutlet, and the fresh — never frozen — raw beef and generous portion were the highlights. With solo counter seats plus 2- and 4-person tables, Goshi Goshi is an easy place to eat a filling meal alone.

Busan Italian restaurant with blue cheese pizza: Molto Italiano

Molto Italiano is an Italian restaurant on the second floor of a shopping complex near Busan City Hall Station Exit 7 in Yeonje-gu, Busan. Two new menu items arrived: the blue cheese Bismarck pizza (17,500 won), served with a soft-boiled yolk to spread across the crust, and the squid ink risotto (16,500 won), topped with a whole squid to cut up and eat between bites of ink rice. Between the self-serve bar and the building's underground parking, Molto Italiano is an easy pick for a date or a family dinner.

Yongin pork bone soup restaurant near Maseong IC: 17,000 won set

Yeonnal Gyeongseong Sundaeguk Maseong IC Branch is a sundaeguk (blood sausage soup) and pork bone soup restaurant on Seongsan-ro in Cheoin-gu, Yongin, Gyeonggi. On a weekend visit at 4:30pm the 17,000 won pork bone soup set came with sundae and boiled pork, plus a clay pot so large it dwarfed a bowl of rice, filled with meaty bones in a deep broth with no gamey smell. For a hot, filling meal after a day out at the big cafés nearby, Yeonnal Gyeongseong Sundaeguk is good value.

Sweet potato cheese tonkatsu near Seogwangju Station: Jinsimwang

Jinsimwang Donkatsu Seogwangju Branch is a large-portion tonkatsu (breaded pork cutlet) restaurant in Geumho-dong, Seo-gu, Gwangju, right by Seogwangju Station and next to Daiso, Uniqlo and ABC Mart. The sweet potato cheese tonkatsu oozed cheese the moment it was cut, and with cold jjolmyeon (chewy noodles in icy broth) plus extra spicy sauce and the self-serve bar of kimchi, lettuce wraps and soup, two people still couldn't finish it. A huge parking lot and a free self-packing station make Jinsimwang easy for a family outing or a solo meal alike.

Noryangjin Korean BBQ restaurant: Set A for two at Naengsam Hanok

Naengsam Hanok is a frozen pork belly Korean BBQ restaurant on the 1st floor of the building by Exit 3 of Noryangjin Station in Dongjak, Seoul. Set A brings beef belly, frozen pork neck and frozen pork belly plus gochujang-marinated pork belly, and two people who added pork skin and mul naengmyeon (cold noodle soup) had more than enough, with doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) and steamed egg included. With only about 5 tables, it is worth arriving at Naengsam Hanok before 6pm.

Gwanpyeong-dong Japanese restaurant with kids' meal trays: Choi Dining

Choi Dining Daejeon Gwanpyeong is a Japanese fusion restaurant in Gwanpyeong-dong, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, where you can order futomaki rolls alongside rice bowls and noodles. On a dinner visit with children, the order was aged salmon futomaki (5 pcs, 14,900 won), cube salmon rice bowl 17,000 won, maze soba 13,000 won and pork jowl rice bowl 13,000 won, and the staff brought out a baby chair, a kids' meal tray, rice with seaweed and even dessert snacks. The salmon, aged a second time on kelp, and mixing rice into the leftover maze soba sauce were the most memorable parts of the meal.

Goseong raw fish restaurant, kid-friendly sashimi to go: Bongpo Hoega

Bongpo Hoega is a raw fish restaurant near Bongpo Beach in Goseong, Gangwon, that brings in its fish every morning from the local fish market auction. On a family trip with a young child, the writer skipped dine-in and took the assorted sashimi platter, medium (69,000 won), back to the rental instead, and Bongpo Hoega packed chojang, soy sauce, wasabi and chopsticks generously enough that setting the table was all that was left. With plump shrimp and a nutty homemade ssamjang included, takeout from Bongpo Hoega turned out to be the right call.

Sweet shrimp sashimi and salt gimbap in Sokcho: Sokcho Daeilho Bangeo

Sokcho Daeilho Bangeo is a sashimi and sushi takeout shop at stall 6 in the chicken alley of Sokcho Tourist Fish Market in Sokcho, Gangwon. Sokcho sweet shrimp sashimi (30,000 won) and flounder-and-aged-kimchi salt gimbap (seaweed rice roll, 20,000 won) went back to the room to eat: the peeled shrimp were springy and turned sweet as you chewed, and the tangy aged kimchi in the gimbap woke up the appetite. Sokcho Daeilho Bangeo is an easy stop for packing a seafood dinner along with other market snacks.
