Yeongjong weekday lunch, spicy mushroom broth: Pyeonbaek Hoegwan

It's getting properly chilly in the mornings and evenings and there's that autumn smell in the air. I'm a shabu-shabu lover to begin with, but the broth calls even louder once fall hits. Today I've brought a review of Pyeonbaek Hoegwan, where you can enjoy both shabu-shabu and cypress steam! I visited on a weekday around noon!

Parking at Jinro Mart next door
Pyeonbaek Hoegwan sits right in the Haneul City center commercial district! Honestly this building can be a bit tricky to park at, but as I pulled in I noticed Jinro Mart right next door offers parking support! Even as a beginner driver, parking at Jinro Mart was really convenient.
Picking the lunch set broths: katsuo and spicy mushroom
Since I came for a weekday lunch, I ordered the lunch set with katsuo (basic) + spicy mushroom broth! With so many broths to choose from, there's real fun in picking.
The self-bar: shabu-shabu vegetables, rice-paper wrappers and salad
While waiting for the cypress steam to arrive after ordering, I went to fill a plate with vegetables for rice-paper rolls. One side had shabu-shabu vegetables, the other was piled with rice-paper roll veggies.
The vegetables felt so fresh! On the plates for rice-paper rolls, the vegetable names were thoughtfully labeled, so I just filled it up accordingly. And in the back there was even a simple salad bar? I hurried right over with my plate.
There was bread and soup and corn kernels that kids love, and my favorites — tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), pasta, and even a self-serve porridge corner! Everything was set up warm, which made it taste even better.
For shabu-shabu there were also two kinds of meat to grab yourself, and the meat looked fresh too!
A kids' play space right beside the tables
And here's another advantage of Pyeonbaek Hoegwan I discovered. There's a kids' play space right next to the dining area. Shabu-shabu buffets like this can get chaotic with kids around, but I think this place would be great to visit with children next time. Sitting right next to the play space, you could keep a safe eye on the kids while eating.
How much cypress-steamed meat do you get?
As I looked around, the cypress steam arrived! Wait, what's with this portion? It looks like just one tray of this would fill you up!! There's sweet pumpkin, shrimp, and bean sprouts laid underneath the meat.
Steaming hot!
While I was enjoying the salad bar a bit, the staff member opened the lid right on time — ta-da!
I dove into the rice-paper rolls with real focus. The shrimp made it even tastier. I piled in vegetables and sauce to taste and enjoyed the rolls.
I grabbed another rice paper wrapper too and packed it with vegetables and meat, and before I knew it I was already full. Imagine packing that much meat into rice-paper rolls! But now it's broth time! Tasting the cypress steam and rice-paper rolls made me look forward to the shabu-shabu even more.
From cypress steam to shabu-shabu, bunmoja included
Once I finished the cypress steam, they switched it over to the shabu-shabu broth. So I headed back to the self-bar and loaded up a big plate of meat and vegetables!
They even have bunmoja (sweet potato glass noodles)!! Bunmoja lovers, rejoice. Plenty of vegetable varieties too.
Honestly I was already getting full, but meat is non-negotiable. Shabu-shabu is all about the combination of broth, meat, and vegetables.
How spicy is the spicy mushroom broth?
The warm shabu broth was delicious and I enjoyed it to the fullest. I usually prefer the basic broth over spicy ones, but this spicy version wasn't harsh at all — just nicely spicy and tasty. Switching between the two, I never got tired of either!
Skipping the free kalguksu: the portions are huge
Whenever I go for shabu-shabu I make sure to finish with kalguksu (noodle soup) and porridge, but today the portions were so, so generous and the broth so good that between the cypress steam, rice-paper rolls, and shabu-shabu, I had to skip the kalguksu, sadly. Since the kalguksu noodles are free, big eaters should definitely order and enjoy them!
