I got back from Nha Trang last week and I was so worn out I had zero desire to cook at home, you know? My husband and I went out for a relaxed lunch, wanting to heal with clean, fresh sushi, and when I looked around I found a place famous for sushi near Hwajeong Station — so without hesitation, I went to Min Cook Dasima, a well-known restaurant in Ilsan Hwajeong.

On one side of the entrance, the Hundred-Year Store certification plaque from the Ministry of SMEs and Startups and the Gyeonggi Tourism Association's Tourist Restaurant certification mark were both clearly hung up — made me realize this isn't a Hwajeong restaurant for nothing.

Inside Min Cook Dasima: window single seats and the self-service zone

Inside, Min Cook Dasima is mostly tables for four, with single seats also set up by the window. The floor-to-ceiling windows make it feel open, and the seating is spaced generously, so it's comfortable whether you're eating with family or solo.

Overall the interior is cozy and kept spotless, and with the big window by the window seats and the generous spacing between tables, it's just the right atmosphere for a relaxed meal. Being a Hwajeong restaurant, lots of people were coming in for lunch even on a weekday.

How much is the weekday lunch sushi set for two? 39,000 won

What we ordered at Min Cook Dasima was the weekday lunch discount sushi set for two at ₩39,000 (₩19,500 per person). The menu is set up as a QR code on each table, so we checked and ordered right from our seats.

With a Toss menu QR code standing on each table, it was easy to browse and order while sitting down. The menu ranged from sushi à la carte to sushi sets, plus raw fish rice bowls, pork cutlet, and soba sets — quite varied. Since we came on a weekday for lunch, we ordered from the weekday lunch discount menu.

Before the main meal, an appetizer porridge came out first — savory, warm, and soft in texture, it was so nice for soothing the stomach before eating.

While I was eating the appetizer porridge, the main lunch special sushi set arrived, filling the table with a hearty spread. From fresh sushi to tempura, salad, and soup, it was a perfect spread that made me smile just looking at it.

It's a mouthwatering spread just to look at, but I was hungry so let's dig in right away.

Let's zoom in one more time on the good stuff 😎

What comes in the Min Cook Dasima sushi set, course by course?

Min Cook Dasima's sushi set comes with steamed egg, three kinds of tempura (shrimp, sweet pumpkin, pepper), salad, and soup, and the sushi lineup went: fried tofu sushi, egg sushi, salmon sushi, flounder sushi, tuna sushi, mackerel sushi, soy sauce shrimp sushi, and salmon sushi topped with sauce.

Before diving into the sushi proper, I took a big spoonful of the steamed egg first — springy like pudding yet soft, the texture was just so good.

Soft steamed egg scooped up with a spoon

The first thing I reached for was the fried tofu sushi, seasoned sweet and salty right through — the thick, savory tofu was packed generously with rice, great for a full mouthful.

The egg sushi shows off the basics of a Japanese restaurant — the egg was thick and fluffy, with a soft texture too.

After two pieces of sushi, the three kinds of tempura came into view. Shrimp tempura, sweet pumpkin tempura, and pepper tempura — freshly fried, golden brown, and still crispy, this tempura included in the set was crispy outside and moist inside, great to enjoy in between bites of sushi.

The glossy, fresh salmon sushi spread its savory salmon flavor smoothly the moment it hit my mouth — not fishy at all, clean, and really delicious.

The flounder sushi, with its chewy texture as the star, had a generous cut of fish wrapping the rice, and the freshness came through — the more I chewed, the more savory it got.

The clean, mild tuna sushi had such fresh, thick fish that I could really feel the chew. Topped with scallion as a garnish, it was clean without any heaviness.

The mild mackerel sushi was piled with savory sesame seeds, and the distinctive texture of mackerel actually paired surprisingly well with the sushi — that caught me off guard.

This is the soy sauce shrimp sushi with its lively, springy texture. The soy sauce seasoning, not too salty and just sweet-salty enough, soaked all the way into the shrimp flesh — the more I chewed, the more the umami exploded.

The finale was decorated with salmon sushi topped generously with crisp onion and a soft sauce. The combination of the refreshing sauce and fresh salmon was so clean that I enjoyed it perfectly down to the very last piece.

Is the 3,900 won kake soba add-on worth ordering?

Since the sushi set was a bit light on buckwheat noodles, I added Min Cook Dasima's side menu kake soba for ₩3,900. It's an add-on available when you order one menu per person, and the portion was just right, with cool broth that hit the spot too.

I actually wanted to order the soba set, but sushi was calling my name more that day, so I regretfully went with the sushi set instead — and sure enough, I found myself missing the buckwheat noodles a bit. But since the side menu lets you add kake soba for ₩3,900 with one menu per person, I ordered it without a second thought, and the portion was just right along with the cool broth, making the sushi set feel even more filling 😊

Thanks to this neat, fresh sushi spread that washed away even our travel fatigue, we finished a really satisfying, hearty lunch. If you're near Hwajeong Station looking for delicious food and a good time to shake off your fatigue and feel good, whether on a weekend or weekday lunch, and want high-quality sushi or a comforting meal, I strongly recommend Min Cook Dasima, a Hundred-Year Store that has proven its flavor and care over many years :)
