Quiet Namcheon-dong bar in Busan with window seats and pajeon: Daeun

In short

Daeun Namcheon-dong Main Branch is an aged-sashimi izakaya in an alley near Namcheon Beach Market in Suyeong-gu, Busan. On a chilly evening, two friends took a window seat at Daeun and ordered flower hot pot and giant futomaki, but the freshly grilled pajeon (Korean green onion pancake) served as a free side dish was the standout, crisp outside and soft inside. Daeun fills up completely without a reservation, yet the older crowd keeps it quiet enough for a relaxed drink.

What kind of bar is Daeun Namcheon-dong Main Branch?

Daeun Namcheon-dong Main Branch is an aged sashimi izakaya at 45 Suyeong-ro 388beon-gil, Suyeong-gu, Busan, in an alley near Namcheon Beach Market. It's open Tue–Sun 16:00–01:00 (last order 00:00), closed every Monday.

Namcheon-dong is also known as "Bread-cheon-dong" for its bakeries, but at night the neighborhood's alleys hide a surprising number of good restaurants too. Honestly, sometimes I miss that feeling of Gwangalli before it got so trendy — the vibe of grabbing drinks with your team lead after work, you know?

On a day I wanted exactly that feeling, I visited Daeun, a well-known spot in Namcheon-dong.

Doesn't the exterior already have a certain feel to it? Daeun is famous for its aged sashimi, so there's even a fish tank out front.

Do you need a reservation at Daeun?

When we walked into Daeun Namcheon-dong Main Branch, it was already nearly full of customers. If we hadn't had a plan, we probably would've had to wait... it's really that kind of beloved local spot!

Even though the place was packed relative to its size, the crowd skewed a bit older, so it wasn't too loud!

The fridge was stocked with a wide variety of sake, which drink lovers (myself included) will appreciate.

This was the seat we were shown to! A window seat, which made it fun to watch the outside while eating.

What we ordered and the free pajeon side dish

The menu at Daeun, this Namcheon-dong, Busan favorite! With the weather turning chilly, we were both craving something warm and soupy, so we ordered flower hot pot and giant futomaki. We decided to save the sashimi for our next visit.

Once we ordered, the basic side dishes came out along with pajeon (savory pancake). Stir-fried anchovies, seasoned bean sprouts, and a pajeon fresh off the grill.

The pajeon in particular was fantastic. The outside was crisped up nicely and the inside stayed moist — the kind of flavor that could carry a whole bottle of soju on its own.

My friend, saying we should drink in moderation today, brought along a hangover-relief tablet for me. Such a thoughtful touch, haha.

How was the flower hot pot at Daeun?

The flower hot pot came out first, and it genuinely looked like a flower. The taste reminded me of mille-feuille nabe — I thought the name was such a clever pick, haha.

Beef and vegetables rolled and arranged in the flower hot pot

Thin slices of beef rolled around cabbage and vegetables, arranged all around the pot like petals — good to look at, good to eat.

After simmering it thoroughly and picking pieces out one by one, the beef was tender with no gamey smell, and cooking the vegetables together brought out a slight sweetness that made it delicious.

The broth wasn't spicy or salty in an aggressive way — it stayed mild, so we never got tired of it, and as the meat and vegetables kept releasing flavor, the broth somehow tasted better the further along we got?? There was a good amount too — at first we wondered if the two of us could really finish it all, but we didn't leave a single bite ,,^^ hahaha.

What's inside the giant futomaki?

Next up was the giant futomaki.

The futomaki at Daeun, this Namcheon-dong, Busan favorite, was packed with salmon, shrimp, egg, cucumber, and other vegetables.

Despite having so many ingredients, none of them overpowered the others, and the combination worked really well together — with a bit of wasabi on top, it got even better.

This was genuinely a combination that made the drinks go down way too easily.

Is Daeun in Namcheon-dong worth a return visit?

The place was nearly full from the start and customers never stopped coming the whole time we ate — now I get why. Every dish was above average, and with so many side-dish options on the menu, it seems like there'd be fun in trying something different on repeat visits.

Next time, I'm going all in on the aged sashimi this place is famous for, along with some sake. This was a fully satisfying evening — eating a ton of great food and having a happy drink with a close friend 🖤
