These days, with the mornings and evenings turning cool and my appetite waking up, I keep craving something spicy and piping hot.

You know those days when you crave a fiery broth even though you didn't drink too much the night before?

That was me this day — mulling over lunch, I ended up craving spicy jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) and headed over to Dongtan Namgwangjang. The name itself caught my eye: Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong Dongtan Namgwangjang Branch.

Parking: free for 1.5 hours at the public lot right in front
There's a public parking lot right in front of this great jjamppong spot, which made things so convenient. Free parking for a full 1.5 hours.
The lot has plenty of space too, so it's worth noting if you're driving over.

When you search for good jjamppong spots in Hwaseong, you usually see the standard seafood jjamppong or beef brisket jjamppong. This place was a bit different.

Inside: solo bar seats, group reservations, and takeout
The interior of this great jjamppong spot is very clean and pleasant, and it seemed like a good place for a family meal out or a work lunch.

There are also solo dining bar seats set up for people eating alone.

They also take group reservations and takeout orders.
Ordering at this great jjamppong spot is done through a tablet. Their signature dish is the kkomak jjamppong (cockle jjamppong), loaded with cockles. Cockles and jjamppong — at first I wondered what kind of combination that would be, but after trying it, I understood why they make it their flagship dish. If you're looking for a good jjamppong spot in Hwaseong, this is worth a visit.

Spice levels 1 to 4 — went with level 1 this time
Here's the menu at this great jjamppong spot. They're apparently a restaurant that stir-fries the cockle jjamppong fresh the moment you order it. Naturally, a jjamppong made to order right after you order it is a lot more exciting than one made from pre-prepared broth.

They pile in a generous amount of fresh cockles and add them to a deep, rich, smoky broth, which got me even more excited.
And apparently you can adjust the spice level from 1 to 4. Sometimes eating very spicy food leaves my stomach feeling uneasy afterward, so I ordered a moderately spicy level 1.
I liked that you could pick the spice level to your own taste. If you love spicy food, bumping up the level would probably be a great stress reliever. And if you can't handle spicy food well, being able to adjust the level down should make it much less intimidating. Either way, it's nice having the option.

After sitting down, ordering, and waiting, the smell of the food slowly started drifting over. The basic sides — pickled radish and onion — came out.

If you need more sides, you can grab them from the self-serve bar.
How was the cockle jjamppong?
And finally, my cockle jjamppong arrived! The spicy aroma typical of jjamppong mixed with a smoky char really got my appetite going. Jjamppong is definitely best right when it's freshly made and still bubbling — especially with soup dishes, you have to eat them hot for the real flavor.

Cockles were piled generously on top of the broth, blending in with the noodles and other ingredients — just looking at it made me feel the spiciness. This was actually my first time properly trying a jjamppong with cockles, so I was curious what it would taste like. If I had to sum up the cockle jjamppong I ate in one line, I'd call it 'a spicy broth with cockle umami and smoky char added to jjamppong.' It wasn't just a spicy jjamppong — the smokiness in the broth and the plump texture of the cockles were the real highlights.

First, I tried a spoonful of the broth. The first taste was spicy with a subtle smokiness, and as it lingered, a refreshing seafood flavor followed. It wasn't just spicy — the broth itself was rich and deep, which I really liked. The spiciness and umami came through together, making me keep dipping my spoon back in.

Then I picked up a cockle and tried it — the springy texture was still intact and paired really well with the jjamppong broth. The ocean-fresh umami of the cockles blended into the broth for a feel quite different from your average jjamppong. If you're looking for jjamppong in Hwaseong and want to try something a bit different, cockle jjamppong seems like a solid choice.
The noodles matched the broth well too. With jjamppong, how well the broth soaks into the noodles matters a lot, and eating them with that spicy broth filled my mouth with flavor. I kept going back and forth — a bite of noodles, a cockle, another spoonful of broth, over and over.

The smoky char in the broth was my favorite part
What I liked most was the smoky char in the broth. Sometimes jjamppong is just intensely spicy without much depth, but here the added smokiness kept the broth from feeling flat. Maybe that's why I kept wanting more with every bite. The broth is one of the key things I look for when hunting for a great jjamppong spot, and the cockle jjamppong I had this day left a strong impression with its broth.

These days, a lot of people want more than a simple, basic meal out of a bowl of jjamppong. In that sense, the generous amount of cockles was another plus. Eating cockles along with the noodles, instead of just noodles alone, gave it a nice chewy element and let you taste that distinct seafood umami.
Does it work as a Hwaseong hangover cure?
Above all, I thought this kind of fiery broth would work great as a hangover-cure meal too. Thinking about Hwaseong hangover-cure options... a spicy broth that really clears out your system, plus cockles on top, made it feel like a satisfying, filling meal. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a good hangover-cure spot in Hwaseong.

If you're looking for a good jjamppong spot in Hwaseong, trying the cockle jjamppong instead of the usual options could be a fun change. And does that mean there's no meat?? Not at all — I was surprised by how much meat was packed in too.

If you usually like jjamppong but have always eaten the same seafood jjamppong and have been curious about something new, this is worth trying at least once. It'll probably come to mind especially on days you crave a spicy broth, need a filling lunch, or are looking for a Hwaseong hangover cure.
If you're looking for a great jjamppong spot in Hwaseong, try picking cockle jjamppong instead of the standard option. With a hot broth and plenty of cockles piled in, one bowl left me feeling full and quite satisfied. After eating properly this day, I got curious about the other menu items too. Still, if I come back, I think I'd order the cockle jjamppong again first.
