Spicy sweet potato cheese pork cutlet near Busan Station: Dal and

In short

Gyeongyangsik Dal and Sixpence Main Branch is an old-style Korean-Western cutlet restaurant near Busan Station in Dong-gu, Busan. The writer ordered the spicy sweet potato cheese pork cutlet, which came with soup, macaroni, salad, kkakdugi (radish kimchi) and rice, and was so loaded with cheese that everything beneath the sweet potato mousse turned out to be cheese. The spicy sauce cut through the richness so well that every bite stayed enjoyable to the end.

Today I ate an absolutely dripping-with-cheese pork cutlet. This is a place overflowing with cheese — Gyeongyangsik Dal and Sixpence Main Branch, near Busan Station. I wondered what the name meant, and apparently it's taken from a novel title. Pretty unusual name, haha, I think it'll stick in my memory.

Gyeongyangsik pork cutlet starts with soup

As soon as you sit down, a gyeongyangsik-style soup comes out. I prefer old-school gyeongyangsik pork cutlets over Japanese-style ones, and the first reason is exactly this — the soup!

It's warm and rich, so having a bowl before the cutlet made me a little nostalgic.

Why I chose the spicy sweet potato cheese pork cutlet

I ordered the spicy sweet potato cheese pork cutlet. Honestly, cheese pork cutlets can be delicious at first but get greasy the more you eat. So I was looking for a menu I could eat to the end without getting sick of it, and the spicy kick was exactly right. It wasn't super spicy — just enough to cleanly cut through the richness now and then without ruining the flavor of the cutlet and cheese, so I could enjoy it deliciously all the way through.

They use Seoul Milk cheese, which happens to be my favorite, and domestic Grade 1 pork belly, they say. There was also a tasty steak sauce drizzled on top, so I was already excited before it even arrived.

Piled with sweet potato mousse — what's in the full set?

And finally, the sweet potato cheese cutlet arrived~~ The visual alone was gorgeous. It was piled high with sweet potato mousse on top, which made it look even more appetizing, and it came with macaroni, salad, and kkakdugi.

Plus rice spread out generously on the plate, haha. It felt like everything you'd need for eating a pork cutlet was all there.

And looking at it again, what a gorgeous sight... Since the sweet potato mousse sits on top, you might think that thick layer underneath is meat, right? Nope, it's all cheese^^

Cheese stretches when you cut it — the spice keeps it balanced

When I cut into the cutlet, it was genuinely touching how much cheese was packed inside. The soft cheese stretched out in long pulls, and the sweetness of the sweet potato mousse combined with the spicy sauce made for a great pairing.

I especially loved having that spicy element. Even with all that cheese piled in, the spicy sauce cut the richness so it felt less greasy, and I kept reaching for more. Out of all the sweet potato cheese cutlets I've had, this combination of cheese, sweet potato mousse, and spice was my favorite.

The atmosphere and the phone charger service

When I first arrived there weren't many people, but by the time I was eating, the seats had filled up completely. I guess it makes sense that a lot of people near Busan Station come looking for this place.

There were also phone chargers set up on one side, so you could charge your phone without even having to ask. On days when your battery's dying, a small touch like that is oddly welcome, haha.
