Seoul chicken restaurant, ₩77,000 dinner for 3: Gyeryugwan in Sindang
In short
Gyeryugwan is an oak-fired chicken restaurant one minute on foot from Exit 2 of Sindang Station in Jung-gu, Seoul. Three diners arrived on a Thursday at 6:30pm and spent ₩77,000 on oak and neungi mushroom fire-roasted chicken, assorted chicken jeon (savory pancakes), meat doenjang makguksu (buckwheat noodles) and dakgaejang (spicy chicken soup) with a Zero Coke, and there was no wait even though Gyeryugwan was nearly full. All four dishes landed well, and the fire-roasted chicken and the doenjang makguksu were the group's unanimous favorites.

Today's post is about Gyeryugwan, a famous line-up restaurant in Sindang known for its chicken dishes. It's a Sindang favorite with tender oak fire-roasted chicken and dishes made from all kinds of chicken parts — I'd go back 100% of the time. Here's my review of the four dishes we tried, plus the menu and wait-time info (spoiler: everything was delicious).

Which Sindang Station exit? Getting to Gyeryugwan and the mood inside

Gyeryugwan is just a minute's walk from Exit 2 of Sindang Station. There's firewood stacked outside — so cool! It's near Sindang Seoul Jungang Market, an area packed with hip bars and good restaurants, so it makes a great stop for a Sindang date course.
Any wait at 6:30pm on a Thursday? Gyeryugwan reservation rules
We came on a Thursday at 6:30pm, and luckily there was no wait, but the place was nearly full!
After 7pm a line started to form. You can register for a walk-in table via Table Waiting in front of the restaurant. * Naver Reservations only cover the 4pm slot * 2-hour dining limit when the restaurant is full
The interior is a cozy wood tone, with group seating available too — great for gatherings. The place smelled so good the whole time, it was almost torture, haha.

Gyeryugwan has appeared on a ton of shows — Waiting Line Restaurant, Pyeon-Restaurant, Live Broadcast Today, and more. I'm not usually one to fully trust TV-famous restaurants, but Gyeryugwan is the kind of place that makes you nod along, no argument.

Gyeryugwan's three sauces and three side dishes
The basic side sauces: white sauce, salted seed relish, and ssamjang. That white sauce is seriously addictive, haha.

Three side dishes: radish pickle, yeolmu kimchi, and napa cabbage kimchi. The kimchi is nice and refreshing, so eating some between bites completely cuts the greasiness.
Dakgaejang, spicy chicken soup, ₩13,000 ★★★★☆

Dakgaejang (spicy shredded chicken soup) came out first — highly recommend it if you're drinking. The broth is spicy and refreshing, the kind that clears out your whole system. By the way, rice is available for free.

Full of bean sprouts, bracken fern, scallions, and even flat glass noodles that usually go into dakgaejang!
And the amount of chicken is genuinely huge — it just keeps coming. Dakgaejang usually has a lot of tougher cuts in it, but Gyeryugwan uses softer parts, which makes it even more delicious.
Assorted chicken jeon, ₩25,000 ★★★★☆
An assorted platter of chicken fritters made from multiple parts — thigh, neck, heart, and even spicy chicken balls!

Order the assorted jeon and you also get pickled onions and salted squid on the side.

Every piece of jeon was big and hearty, packed with filling. From the tender thigh meat to the chewy heart, you get a whole range of flavors and textures.

Putting some of the salted relish on top of the jeon makes it even better — an explosion of umami!

The spicy chicken balls, made from minced breast meat and cartilage, were the best out of the bunch! Highly recommend the assorted jeon if you're drinking makgeolli.
Oak and neungi mushroom fire-roasted chicken, ₩23,000 ★★★★★

Next up: Gyeryugwan's signature, the oak and neungi mushroom fire-roasted chicken. The presentation alone is unbeatable. If two of you are coming, I'd say get this as your base dish and add one side. So, so good.
It's smoked over oak for over an hour with various spices, so the aroma is incredible.
The glutinous rice packed inside is hearty and full of neungi and shiitake mushroom fragrance, with mushroom bits you can bite into throughout and a subtle garlic scent too. Load a spoonful up with the salted relish and kimchi and it's delicious, healthy, all in one.

And the chicken is unbelievably tender. How is it this soft? Thigh, wing, even the usually-dry breast meat just melts in your mouth...

Make sure to dip it in the tartar sauce, seriously. All I could say was 'delicious.'

The chicken skin especially is on another level. I usually rank chicken lowest among chicken, beef, and pork because of that particular smell, but Gyeryugwan's chicken has zero funk. I've got to bring my husband, he's obsessed with chicken, haha.
Meat doenjang makguksu, ₩13,000 ★★★★★
The final crowning dish: meat doenjang makguksu (buckwheat noodles in doenjang sauce). Why is even the makguksu this good? When I interviewed my dining companions afterward, they picked the fire-roasted chicken and the makguksu as the best of the meal.
It's topped with chicken stir-fried in doenjang, yeolmu, chewy sliced boiled meat, and a soft-boiled egg. The doenjang flavor isn't overpowering at all — just a subtle, savory depth that pretty much everyone would like.

The noodles are house-made with a high buckwheat content, so they have a rich buckwheat aroma and a soft texture. Nutty, clean, and springy.

The seasoning isn't harsh at all, just moderately spicy with great umami, and the perilla oil aroma really comes through — I loved it.
Is Gyeryugwan in Sindang worth a return visit?

Personally, it was so delicious that I'd give 100% odds on going back. I highly recommend visiting Gyeryugwan, a Sindang restaurant well worth the trip.
