Weekday evening vocal jazz quintet at Flat Nine, Sinnonhyeon

Are you and your partner stuck in the same old date routine — movie then dinner, or dinner then a café, over and over?

You want to eat something good together, but just eating and parting feels a bit lacking, and yet another café visit feels kind of predictable, haha.

So this time I wanted to try a slightly different Gangnam Station date, and I went to Flat Nine, where you can enjoy live jazz and a meal in the same space!

I'd been to a few other jazz bars before, but what made Flat Nine so appealing was that you can eat a full course meal and listen to live jazz right in the middle of Gangnam~😃

Where is Flat Nine and how do you book?

It's located between Gangnam Station and Sinnonhyeon Station, so it's easy to get to by public transport.

Inside a 5th-floor jazz bar — what's the vibe like?

I visited on Thursday, August 27, a weekday evening. When you hear "jazz bar," you kind of picture a basement space with a dark, heavy atmosphere, right? Flat Nine is on the 5th floor of a building, and once you step inside, the mood shifts so completely that for a moment you forget you're in the middle of Gangnam.

Outside the window, cars keep passing and people keep bustling along the Gangnam street, but just inside, the lights are dimmed, the piano, drums, and bass are set up, and people are quietly waiting for the show to start — the contrast was oddly striking.

It was a little surreal that a space like this exists in the middle of Gangnam, haha. The bar area had a great atmosphere too, with wine and various liquors on display — I thought this could work well as a spot to focus on the show and drinks rather than the meal.

What's in the Classic Course for two at ₩78,000?

We ordered the Classic Course for two at ₩78,000.

The course went from an aperitif to amuse-bouche, bread, salad, pasta, main, and finally dessert. Since we arrived a bit early before the show started, we got to enjoy the food first, which was nice. You could check the menu and choose your options on the tablet at the table.

The aperitif that came out first was a drink of cranberry, raspberry, mint, and lemon topped with sparkling wine~ It definitely had a refreshing taste that woke up the palate, though personally it wasn't quite my usual style, haha. Still, it was a fine light drink to start the course with~

The small dishes and salad that followed had clean plating, so it was fun to look at each one.

Personally, I liked the salad. The ingredients weren't too heavy and felt light, which cleansed the palate before the pasta and main dish that followed. Who knew squid and melon would go this well together!

And the bread! It came with focaccia, extra virgin olive oil, and balsamic glaze. When a course meal has bread this good, it just makes you happy, haha. It was nice to dip in the sauces here and there, too.

Lasagna with added truffle cream

The pasta for the day was lasagna! I paid an extra ₩4,000 to add white truffle cream, and in the end, I'm glad I did. They put on a more generous amount of truffle cream than I expected, and eating it with the lasagna made for a much richer flavor.

In particular, the edges of the lasagna were cooked slightly crispy, giving a nice textural contrast with the soft inside. Eating the creamy soft part together with the crispy edge made this the dish I remembered most from the course. Flat Nine really is a Gangnam Station pasta spot, ha.

Main: dry-aged Jeju black pork tenderloin

Dry-aged Jeju black pork tenderloin steak came out next. I personally tend to prefer meat that's browned in the classic seared steak style, so the flavor itself wasn't entirely my type, haha.

But it was really tender. True to a tenderloin, there was almost no chewiness, and no strain at all while chewing. Eating it with the mushrooms and potatoes on the side made it feel like a properly filling finish to the course as the main dish.

And honestly, we didn't stop at the course — we also ordered a side of fries, haha. The fries tasted exactly like the familiar, unremarkable fries you'd expect! They were good to pick at one or two at a time while watching the show, making them a pretty solid snack for the jazz performance.

The final dessert was a chocolate cake. I usually don't like desserts that are so sweet you get tired of them after a bite or two, but this one wasn't overly sweet, just sweet enough to lift your mood. It had that taste that makes you crave coffee at the end of a course, haha. It was also a good way to finish eating right before settling into the show.

The highlight of the night: the Lee Gyu-ri Quintet live

But what I was most looking forward to at Flat Nine wasn't the food — it was the jazz! I visited on Thursday, August 27, 2026. The show that day was Great American Songbook — the Lee Gyu-ri Quintet.

A five-piece lineup! The show started at 8pm, and as I remember, the first set ended around 8:50pm, then after a short break, the second set began at 9pm.

Because of my schedule, I unfortunately had to leave after just the first set. Walking out, I really regretted it. ㅠ.ㅠ If my timing had allowed it, I would have loved to order a bottle of wine and take my time through the second set as well.

More than anything, this was actually my first time properly watching live jazz with a vocalist. Listening to it on YouTube or streaming versus hearing it right in front of you is a completely different experience. From the sense of each instrument filling the space to the vocalist's breath and expression coming through directly, I found myself listening with unusual focus.

Just getting to hear good music this close was, in itself, a happy and enjoyable time.

During the show, there was even a bit of talk about Flat Nine's stage — something along the lines of having heard that the performance level here is a cut above other places, haha. Of course it might have partly been a line meant to get more of a reaction from the audience, ha, but hearing the show that night, I could really understand why so many people who love music come here.

Is the front row really the best seat? A seating tip

Speaking of seats! I thought the very front row would be the best, haha. We were determined to properly watch the show that day, so we sat right up front.

I thought, of course the front is the best seat for a show! But once the musicians were literally right in front of us playing and singing their hearts out, trying to cut into a steak and eat right in front of them felt oddly stressful. If I focused on the music, I couldn't eat; if I tried to eat, they were performing right there in front of me and I felt weirdly guilty about it.

So next time, I think I'd sit in the second or third row rather than the very front. You'd still be close enough to enjoy the show fully, while being able to enjoy the food and wine more comfortably~ This is just my personal takeaway after actually sitting there, haha.

Overall thoughts

To sum it all up, Flat Nine isn't really a place you go just for the food — it's especially well-suited for a day when you want to unwind with a meal, drinks, and live jazz all in one space.

For me, the performance was by far the most satisfying part, and I still remember how, once you step out of Gangnam Station into the crowds and traffic and chaos, riding up to the 5th floor and listening to jazz felt like being in a completely different world.

Personally, if I visit again, I think I'd skip the full course and just order the pasta I loved as a single dish, slowly work through a bottle of wine, and enjoy the show all the way from the first set to the second.

You don't need to plan an elaborate course for a special day — good food alongside good music is enough on its own to make for a pretty memorable date. If you're looking for a slightly different Gangnam Station date instead of an ordinary dinner, or a Sinnonhyeon spot to take someone who loves music, I think this is worth trying at least once.

Next time, I'm definitely going to leave plenty of time, order a bottle of wine, and stay through the second set~😉
