Uijeongbu lunch spot open-run: 2-person set & udon at Yangchonri

In short

Yangchonri Donkaseu Millak Branch is a third-generation Western-style pork cutlet restaurant on the 2nd floor of Jeil Pungyeongchae Centum in Millak-dong, Uijeongbu. Arriving right at opening, the writer tried the 2-person Set No. 1 (pork cutlet + charcoal-grilled octopus rice bowl + 2 fried shrimp) and the grandma-style udon, finding the thick cutlet, smoky octopus rice, and anchovy-broth udon all satisfying. The place fills up fast at lunchtime, so getting there early is key.

Table spread of pork cutlet at Yangchonri Donkaseu Millak Branch

Yangchonri Donkaseu is an authentic Western-style pork cutlet (donkaseu) restaurant that started in 1986 in Muan, Miryang, Gyeongnam, founded by grandmother Oh Sun-ja. Her youngest son carried on the tradition, and now her granddaughter has taken over — making it a third-generation business. Here's my review of Yangchonri Donkaseu Millak Branch, a cutlet spot with three generations of history!

First customers on an open-run, but fully booked by lunchtime

Once inside, there's plenty of seating further in. The clean interior and bright lighting gave off a vibe that promised good food too. We did an open-run — arriving right at opening — and although delivery riders came and went a lot, we were the first dine-in customers.

I'd heard Yangchonri Donkaseu Millak Branch is a lunch hotspot in Millak, Uijeongbu, and sure enough, the moment lunchtime hit, the place filled up with customers fast. If you're coming for lunch, I'd recommend getting there as early as possible!

Ordering the 2-person Set No. 1 + grandma udon

We ordered the 2-person Set No. 1 (Yangchonri pork cutlet + charcoal-grilled octopus rice bowl + 2 fried shrimp) plus the grandma udon.

Yangchonri pork cutlet

The Yangchonri pork cutlet comes drizzled with a sauce made with mushrooms, onions, and zucchini, which made it look even more appetizing.

The large, thick cutlet had tender meat with no gamey smell, paired well with a tangy Western-style sauce. The sauce was smooth and flavorful, with a fruity note that kept it from feeling greasy — really tasty.

Charcoal-grilled octopus rice bowl

This is a single serving of the charcoal-grilled octopus (jujukmi) rice bowl, and it came packed with octopus.

Mixed spicy octopus rice bowl

Mixing it all together, my mouth was filled with smoky char flavor and spiciness, haha. The octopus was plump and the vegetables were stir-fried just the right amount, giving it a great texture.

Adding in the bean sprouts, which help balance out the spiciness, gave it a whole different kind of satisfaction.

Grandma udon

The moment the grandma udon arrived at the table, a rich anchovy broth aroma wafted up.

The anchovy broth paired with crown daisy (ssukgat) made for a refreshing soup 🫢 The noodles were nice and chewy too — completely my style.

Two pieces of fried shrimp included in the set

2 fried shrimp

The fried shrimp included in the 2-person Set No. 1 seemed like a premade item, but it was crispy and nutty-tasting — enjoyed it 🦐
