Daegu seafood restaurant near Moda Outlet: live abalone stew two ways
In short
Sin Yeongung Cheonggukjang Haemulttukbaegi Seongseo Moda Outlet branch is a seafood stew and cheonggukjang (fermented soybean stew) restaurant near Seongseo Moda Outlet in Dalseo-gu, Daegu. Two friends ordered one live abalone seafood stew (20,000 won) and one live abalone cheonggukjang seafood stew (22,000 won) to taste the broth with and without cheonggukjang, and added a cockle salad (16,000 won) on the side. Between the live abalone still moving in the pot and the roe, milt, and blue crab packed inside, Sin Yeongung made for a satisfying lunch worth returning for.

With the temperature swings between morning and evening getting bigger, some days you just suddenly crave something hot and spicy in broth form haha~
This is the Daegu Moda Outlet restaurant where I loved the Sin Yeongung seafood jjim with a whole octopus leg on top last time, so my friend and I came back after a while!
This time we went all out with two versions of the live abalone seafood stew that's popular for lunch, plus a cockle salad~

I'll introduce this as a Seongseo, Daegu restaurant worth knowing if you love seafood, and a solid Dalseo-gu spot for hearty Korean food!

You can park about 5 cars in front of the store, and there's also Horim 2 Public Parking Lot behind it~
The public lot connects directly to the back entrance and gives you 1 hour free, so eating near the busy Seongseo Moda Outlet was worry-free when it came to parking!

There was a big standing sign at the entrance noting it was featured on MBN's Lee Seung-yoon's Great Culinary Journey, catching my eye even before I walked in~
Inside Sin Yeongung: seating from solo tables to group rooms
The inside of Sin Yeongung Cheonggukjang Haemulttukbaegi Seongseo Moda Outlet branch was bright and clean overall, and with partitions installed at every table, I could eat without worrying much about the crowd even during the busy lunch hour~

With tables for 2 and 4, single seats good for solo dining, and even a group room, it's a Seongseo, Daegu restaurant that works for everything from a Seongseo Industrial Complex worker's lunch to a family group outing!
Every table has an order tablet, so we could easily check menu photos and prices before ordering~
What we ordered: two live abalone stews and a cockle salad
This time we ordered live abalone + cheonggukjang seafood stew (₩22,000), live abalone + seafood stew (₩20,000), and cockle salad (₩16,000). My friend, who loves cheonggukjang, picked the live abalone + cheonggukjang seafood stew~

I wanted to taste the clean, refreshing flavor of the seafood itself, so I ordered the live abalone + seafood stew~

I remembered enjoying the cockle bibimbap here before, so this time we added a cockle salad to share between us!
Banchan side dishes and the self-serve bar
The basic side dishes include a European-style salad, stir-fried fish cake, chili-gochujang mix, marinated mushrooms, and house-made seokbakji (radish kimchi)~
If you want more, you can freely help yourself from the self-serve bar off to one side of the restaurant~

From crunchy salad to chewy marinated mushrooms and spicy chili-gochujang mix, the sides were well-matched to go with the stew!
Every side dish had a clean flavor, so my chopsticks kept moving even before the main dish arrived~
How does the live abalone taste and what is its texture like?
A little while later, two big earthenware pots showed up bubbling away~ The first thing that caught my eye was, of course, the live abalone!
Seeing the big live abalone actually moving was moving in itself — visually, it hit different~
The broth was bubbling so hard it looked ready to spill over, and just watching it made me feel warm all the way through!

We cooked the abalone thoroughly, separated it from the shell, and cut it into bite-size pieces~ The thick abalone meat was springy but not tough, and got more savory the more you chewed it!

Dipping it in soy sauce mixed with a little wasabi really brought out the clean, distinctive flavor of the abalone~
What's inside the stew pot: roe, milt, blue crab, and dumplings
The abalone wasn't the only thing in the stew~

Shrimp, mussels, scallops, blue crab, along with roe, milt, fish cake, and dumplings — all kinds of ingredients packed generously all the way to the bottom of the pot!
The refreshing umami from the various seafood combined with the spice made the broth deep and clean~

The roe melted softly in the mouth, the milt was savory and creamy, and even the fish cake, soaked in broth, was surprisingly a treat! By the time we finished, a pile of seafood shells had built up on one side of the table — the portions were that substantial~
It had the kind of heartiness you'd want from a Daegu Moda Outlet restaurant on a day you're craving hot seafood broth!
Cheonggukjang seafood stew vs plain seafood stew: what's the difference?
The two menus differ only in whether cheonggukjang is added or not — the seafood inside was the same~

My live abalone seafood stew was spicy but refreshing and clean, letting the natural flavor of the seafood come through clearly!

I was curious about my friend's cheonggukjang seafood stew too, so I tried a bite — the cheonggukjang smell wasn't as strong as I expected~ The savory depth of the cheonggukjang added to the seafood's refreshing flavor made the broth feel noticeably heavier and deeper than the plain seafood stew!
If you like cheonggukjang, go for the savory version; if you prefer a clean, spicy seafood-stew style, go for the plain seafood stew~
Each had a clearly different charm, so it was fun ordering one each with my friend and trading bites!
Cockle salad (kkomak muchim) for 16,000 won

The cockle salad we ordered alongside the stew grabbed our appetite right away with its appetizing red seasoning~

The springy cockles came mixed with plenty of fresh cabbage, carrot, onion, and perilla leaf, all tossed in a sweet-and-spicy-and-tangy sauce!
The cockles had no fishy taste and were nicely chewy, and with the crunchy vegetables and fragrant perilla leaf added, the flavor and texture got richer the more you chewed~
The sweet and spicy sauce wasn't heavy, so I kept reaching for more, and after a bite of cockle salad, a spoonful of the hot seafood stew broth paired really well together!
Is Sin Yeongung near Seongseo Moda Outlet worth a repeat visit?
Last time I fell for the hearty Sin Yeongung seafood jjim, and this time I fell hard for the live, moving abalone and the deep, refreshing broth~
I also liked that if you visit with someone who loves cheonggukjang and someone who prefers a clean seafood broth, you can each order the version that suits your taste!
This is the kind of Daegu Moda Outlet restaurant I'll think of again after shopping at Seongseo Moda Outlet, whenever I want a hot, hearty lunch or need to fill up on plenty of seafood~
If you're looking for a Dalseo-gu restaurant with easy parking and a spicy broth that hits the spot, try a meal packed with live abalone at Sin Yeongung Cheonggukjang Haemulttukbaegi Seongseo Moda Outlet branch~ Another satisfying repeat visit!
