I needed a little refresh, so I went looking for a fun, offbeat date spot, and heard that a new studio had opened in Yeonsinnae, Eunpyeong-gu, where you can actually carve and shape jewelry exactly the way you want ✨

As someone who's taken a few jewelry one-day classes before, I'd always felt a little let down by how fixed the designs were at most ring studios in Seoul. But this time, at Munak, I could design completely freely, following whatever I felt like — honestly the most satisfying class I've taken so far 🥹💖

Great for healing alone, and just as great for a couple or friends making memories together — here's my recommended review of the Munak wax carving workshop, a fun offbeat date spot in Yeonsinnae.

Inside the Munak workshop space

I booked a Friday 2pm slot, and the moment I stepped in, I let out a genuine "whoa..." It was by far the roomiest, most pleasant studio I've been to.

Since it's a real working studio where jewelry is actually made professionally, it had this great aura to it, while still feeling relaxed enough to focus and work comfortably.

Run on a small-group, reservation-only basis, so it never feels crowded and you can fully immerse yourself in your own work. With its spacious waiting and work area, it struck me as the perfect spot for anyone looking for a fun offbeat date spot in Yeonsinnae 👍

Munak class lineup and the September opening discount

Munak isn't a studio where you just copy a set jewelry line — you get to handle the material yourself and shape it, putting your own taste into the piece.

To celebrate the opening of the one-day workshop, classes are discounted from the regular price to ₩98,000 through September 30! 🍯 Besides the wax carving class I took, they also run a pet nose-print pendant class, where you bring your pet in, take an impression of its nose print, and turn it into a pendant — so there's something to fit different tastes haha.

How a wax carving ring is made at Munak

While browsing the pretty samples set up in the studio, I fell completely for a hand-lettered engraving design done in a soft white intaglio finish !! 💗

I decided to use the same design but put my own birthday and name into it.

Step 1: Sizing the ring from 8 to 9

Starting from a basic size 8 wax ring, I ground down the inside to resize it up to a 9.

Step 2: Carving the band to 2.5mm thick

They explained that a ring that's too thick can get in the way when worn, so I used a file to carefully carve it down to an average thickness of 2.5mm.

Step 3: Shaping the 5mm width into a wave

For the width, I matched the sample at about 5mm! I'd originally planned to keep the same neat, round band shape as the sample, but partway through I found myself wanting a slightly wavy, rippling look instead.

The owner said I could really make it however I felt like, so I got carried away experimenting with the design haha 🌊

Step 4: Carving the volume and details

Carving that wave shape into the wax by hand turned out to be a lot harder than I expected, but the owner kept helping me fix things along the way 🥹

They suggested that varying the thickness from a side view, not just from above, would give the ring a more three-dimensional, sculptural feel — so I worked that in and ended up with an even more distinctive design!

Step 5: Engraving the birthday date and name

I asked for a pretty hand-lettered date (my birthday!) and a heart symbol engraved on the outside like the sample, and my name in Chinese characters engraved on the inside 🤍

No need to worry if you're not particularly handy — once you rough out the shape during the class, the studio refines the details further afterward and finishes it through a proper metalworking process into a polished Silver 925 piece. Finishing takes about 5 days, and I opted to have the finished ring delivered by courier, so I'm now waiting excitedly for it to arrive 📦✨
