I was looking for somewhere to eat healthy on a weekday lunch and ended up at Sodamchon Suwon Jeongja Branch in Jeongja-dong. I usually prefer clean, easy-on-the-stomach food, so I eat shabu shabu (Korean hot pot with thinly sliced meat and vegetables) a lot, and this place has always given me a satisfying meal thanks to fresh ingredients and a spacious dining room. Clean and filling at the same time — it really felt like I'd found a proper shabu shabu spot in Suwon.

Where is Sodamchon Suwon Jeongja Branch, and where do you park?

Sodamchon Suwon Jeongja Branch is on the 4th floor of Kyungsung Building, so it was very easy to find. Take the elevator up and you're greeted right at the entrance by that clean, warm atmosphere. If you're worried about parking, Seonil Parking Lot gives you 90 minutes free — though note that this only covers one vehicle.

Even if you drive there, the setup makes for a comfortable meal.

How big is the dining room, and what are the seats like?

Walking inside, I was really pleased with how spacious the interior is.

There's even a waiting area. A restaurant that saves the kids, haha! I guess they must sponsor something too.

The tables are set well apart and the interior overall was kept clean, giving off a pleasant feel.

If a dining space feels cramped and stuffy, even great food can leave you a little disappointed — but the open layout here let us eat comfortably without feeling boxed in.

The neat atmosphere made me think it'd be a great place to bring the whole family. It has plenty to please everyone from little kids to parents' generation.

What's on the self-serve salad bar at Sodamchon?

Once we got our table, we headed straight for the self-serve salad bar. At a glance it was packed with all kinds of fresh vegetables. From leafy greens onward, a range of shabu shabu ingredients were neatly laid out, making it fun to pick and choose.

There were plain dumplings, chewy rice cakes, and various kinds of mushrooms to take freely according to taste. On top of that, crispy flakes, savory-sweet salad dressing, and soft dinner rolls were all ready to whet the appetite before the main course.

The vegetables were so fresh that every bite came through with a crisp crunch.

How did the mushroom shabu taste?

This time we ordered the mushroom shabu shabu.

Now all that's left is to put everything in and let it simmer.

The fragrant mushrooms and colorful vegetables started bubbling together, and the gentle aroma that spread was enough to stir up my appetite.

The clean broth and mushrooms together made a deep, savory flavor, and just one sip of the broth filled my mouth with umami.

The savoriness of the meat and the cleanness of the vegetables balanced perfectly, so I kept eating without ever getting tired of it. True to its reputation as a Suwon shabu shabu favorite, the harmony between the broth and ingredients was unmatched.

Eating the well-cooked fresh vegetables and mushrooms together with the perfectly cooked meat, the flavor was truly wonderful.

Finishing the broth with rice-and-egg porridge

I think the highlight of shabu shabu has to be the porridge you finish with at the end. Rice and egg go into the rich broth that's been infused with meat, vegetables and mushrooms, and it's stirred carefully into a finishing porridge.

Taking a spoonful of the finished porridge, a savory, mellow flavor spread through my whole mouth without being too heavy.

Even though I was already full, I was so won over by the savory porridge that I scraped the bowl clean to the last bite. It was the perfect ending — gentle on the stomach while still leaving me satisfied.

The café corner at Sodamchon after the meal

On the way out after the meal, I noticed a small café corner set up in one part of the restaurant. I really liked that they'd thought to let you enjoy a warm cup of coffee right after eating without having to go anywhere else. Sipping the mild coffee aroma while chatting made for a clean finish. From parking to the meal to dessert, every part of the experience was satisfying — Sodamchon Suwon Jeongja Branch, a Suwon shabu shabu favorite, is a place anyone, of any age, can enjoy visiting. If you're trying to decide on a spot for a gathering or a meal out, I can confidently recommend it as a Suwon shabu shabu favorite.
