Daegu restaurant with seed jeotgal seaweed wraps: Geumdeungeo
In short
Geumdeungeo Deulanguil Main Branch is a wood-fired grilled mackerel restaurant on Deulan-ro in Suseong-gu, Daegu. The writer came with a close friend, ordered two servings of wood-fired grilled mackerel and added kkomak muchim (seasoned cockles), and found the best bite was rice, mackerel and seed jeotgal (fermented seed relish) wrapped in gim (dried seaweed). Geumdeungeo is a good choice for a clean, filling mackerel meal when grilling fish at home feels like too much work.

My close friend and I headed to Deulan-ro looking for a Korean set meal and ended up at Geumdeungeo Deulanguil Main Branch. It turned out to be a great spot for a hearty, well-put-together Korean meal.
I usually like grilled fish, but cooking it at home means a lot of smell and a hassle to clean up and prep.
So I wanted to eat grilled mackerel — the kind that's a bit of a pain to make at home.
Since it's grilled in a wood-fired oven, it came out mild and clean-tasting, so I could enjoy it comfortably through the whole meal.

It's located on Deulanguil in Suseong-gu, Daegu, so it wasn't hard to get to by car.
You can park on the ground floor of the building, and there's also tower (mechanical) parking available. A staff member manages parking, so you just follow their guidance.
Inside Geumdeungeo: the room and the group seating
Inside Geumdeungeo Deulanguil Main Branch, the tables had generous spacing, and there was a separate area set up for group seating.
So it seemed like a comfortable place for family meals, and also fine for visits with a larger group.

The menu is mostly Korean food, so it's unlikely to clash with anyone's taste, and the banchan (side dishes) come in a good variety, so it seemed like a comfortable place to eat with older family members too.
If you're looking for a group meeting spot in Daegu, it's worth checking whether a place has group seating like this.

Ordering wood-fired mackerel for two plus seasoned cockles
At Geumdeungeo, you order at the counter first so the food comes out quickly.
I ordered two servings of wood-fired grilled mackerel and added a cockle salad.

Not long after ordering, the basic side dishes and a warm chard-and-soybean-paste soup arrived.

How did the wood-fired mackerel taste?
Then the dish I was most looking forward to arrived — the mackerel, grilled to a golden brown, with almost no bones, so it was easy to pick apart the flesh.

The outside was grilled crisp while the inside stayed moist, so it didn't feel dry at all and was really enjoyable to eat.
Dipping the mackerel lightly in nuruk salt (fermented rice-yeast salt) brought out its mild, clean flavor even more.

How to eat it: seed jeotgal and mackerel wrapped in seaweed
The way I enjoyed it most was putting warm rice on gim, then topping it with mackerel flesh and seed jeotgal to wrap it up.
With the mackerel's savoriness combined with the salty seed jeotgal, the rice just kept going down.

The cockle salad I added on top had crunchy cucumber mixed in with the cockles, dressed spicy-sweet, and alternating it with the grilled mackerel kept my appetite going.

Banchan lineup and the self-serve bar at Geumdeungeo
The spread was quite generous, with black sesame lotus root salad, spicy-seasoned bellflower root, seokbakji (radish kimchi), a green salad, stir-fried nuts and anchovies, seasoned seaweed, japchae (glass noodle stir-fry), green onion kimchi, japchae again, and gim with soy sauce — a good variety of dishes.
Overall, the side dishes weren't too strongly seasoned and were good to eat alongside rice.
Personally, I really enjoyed the savory black sesame lotus root salad, and the japchae was light and easy to eat too.

You could grab extra banchan as needed from the self-serve bar, which was convenient.

After the meal: free coffee and the banchan sales corner
After finishing the meal, there were ice cups, drip coffee, juice, and mix coffee set up by the elevator that we could use.

There was also a fridge selling various side dishes, snacks, and drinks, so I took some time to browse after the meal.
