Fish cake refills at a Yeosu shabu-shabu buffet: Tongkeun Shabu

In short

Tongkeun Shabu is an all-you-can-eat shabu-shabu restaurant on the third floor of a building on Mangma-ro in Hakdong, Yeosu. Two adults visited on a weekend and paid 26,900 won each for the basic broth, refilling thin-sliced beef belly, pork neck and sides of fish cake and dumplings, plus pizza and rice paper wraps from the self-bar. There was so much on offer at Tongkeun Shabu that the fried rice finish had to be skipped.

Inside Tongkeun Shabu: does it take large groups?

Walking into Tongkeun Shabu, it's bigger than expected with plenty of tables. There are even seats for larger groups, which makes it a really reasonable choice for family dinners, friend gatherings, or a work lunch spot haha.

All-you-can-eat restaurants tend to get busy with people moving around, but the tables here have relatively generous spacing, so it was easy to go grab shabu-shabu ingredients while eating!

What is on the all-you-can-eat self-bar?

The main draw of Tongkeun Shabu is, of course, the shabu-shabu refills! There's every kind of vegetable to add to the pot, plus a bunch of side dishes, which made it even better!

There's napa cabbage, mushrooms and other vegetables, and several sauces so you can mix and match to your taste ><. On top of that, there's sushi, fried snacks, chicken and pizza — total kid-favorite territory. Basically it's the kind of salad bar that makes your eyes light up!

You can get sick of just shabu-shabu pretty fast, but with so many different things to try, I really loved it.

Choosing a broth, plus beef belly and pork neck

We also grabbed beef belly and pork neck from the self-bar! At Tongkeun Shabu you can choose between a half-and-half broth or a single broth — this time we went with a single, basic broth haha. There's a saying that basic is best, you know. That day, I think we just wanted a shabu-shabu that stuck to the basics!

Now for the real shabu-shabu time! Once the broth starts bubbling, put in the vegetables you've brought over first, then add the meat piece by piece. You can choose between thinly sliced pork neck and beef belly depending on your taste — with shabu-shabu, briefly cooking the meat in the broth and eating it with vegetables is definitely the best way!!!

While the broth was simmering, we snacked on side dishes. The pizza here is seriously delicious.

Free hanwoo for a receipt review at Tongkeun Shabu

Oh, by the way! If you take part in the Naver receipt review event, you might get hanwoo (Korean beef) as a gift. We joined in and got to try some delicious hanwoo shabu haha. It's genuinely on a totally different level from regular meat.. b

Wrapping rice paper rolls at the table

I loaded up on vegetables, cooked the meat with them, and dipped it right into the sauce — with warm broth, soft meat and crunchy vegetables all together, I couldn't stop reaching for more ><. Plus there were rice paper wrap ingredients too, so wrapping it up doubled the flavor! Dipping it in chili sauce was pure bliss... hehe.

Fish cake and dumpling refills, and the fried rice we skipped

Tongkeun Shabu also has plump dumpling sarie and fish cake sarie (especially the fish cake — genuinely amazing), so we refilled on those! I wanted to finish with fried rice too, but I was way too full and ended up giving it up ㅠ.ㅠ Next time I'll definitely make sure to try the fried rice as well!

It's a place where you get to enjoy picking a little bit of everything, so I'd love to come back next time I'm craving shabu-shabu. Chuseok holiday is starting soon too — everyone, go visit Tongkeun Shabu and enjoy some delicious shabu-shabu!
