Baekseok Station pork BBQ for two: 600g Jeju platter at Dokbul Janggun

In short

Dokbul Janggun Ilsan Baekseok Branch is a dwitgogi (off-cut pork) BBQ restaurant 236m from Exit 6 of Baekseok Station in Goyang, Gyeonggi. Two friends came after work for a birthday and shared the Dokbul 72 Aged Jeju Platter 600g (kkodeulsal, bbol-hangjeong and nakyeopsal, 200g each) with Hallasan cheese steamed egg, a complimentary cheonggukjang (fermented soybean stew) and the owner's homemade mul-kimchi (water kimchi). Dokbul Janggun is worth a return trip when you want pork cuts beyond the usual samgyeopsal or pork shoulder.

Today I visited Dokbul Janggun Ilsan Baekseok Branch, a meat spot near Baekseok Station. There aren't many places that serve pork back-cut (dwitgogi), so the moment I saw it I thought, this is the place! I headed there after work for some protein.

Dwitgogi BBQ near Baekseok Station Exit 6: walked in with no wait

As soon as I arrived, there was a big sign out front: Dokbul Janggun, a specialist in pork kkodeulsal (chewy back-cut meat). I got there early so I walked right in with no wait.

Did you know the residential area near Baekseok Station Exit 6 is a food-lover's paradise? Now I have a new spot I want to keep going back to! There are a lot of meat restaurants around Baekseok Station, but pork back-cut is still pretty unusual, right?

The place is spacious and clean. I care a lot about cleanliness, and I hate when these metal tables have grease on them — but there was none of that here, which I really liked.

The weather's been so nice lately~ eating at the outdoor seats would be amazing! Meat and beer at an atmospheric outdoor table already!!! The people sitting there clearly know what's up.

They even have a recommended course listed, so the owner must be really serious about meat. They also explained the basic side dishes to us — such a friendly restaurant.

This is the drinks and alcohol board. I was surprised at how many kinds of liquor they had!! Hoping lots of drinkers come here haha. Wine/whiskey corkage is ₩10,000, which isn't expensive at all!!

They said if you leave a review, you get honeycomb tripe~! We didn't think we could eat it so we skipped ordering it haha. I think this is the first BBQ place I've seen that sells whiskey and distilled spirits by the glass. I'll have to come back for drinks sometime.

The sign that says 'I'll protect the customers in my restaurant!' is so cute. Disposable aprons are placed all around the seating area. No need to go far to grab one. So convenient~👍👍

Homemade water kimchi was the best of the side dishes

The side dishes were already set up before we even ordered. The shredded scallions were really good too!

For me, the owner's homemade mul-kimchi (water kimchi) was #1!! The salted hairtail intestines (galchi-sokjeot) next to it were also delicious. My friend and I kept eating the water kimchi while singing about wanting to take some home.

Is the Dokbul 72 Aged Jeju Platter 600g enough for two?

What we ordered today was the Dokbul 72 Aged Jeju Platter 600g. The Jeju set comes with kkodeulsal 200g / bbol-hangjeong 200g / nakyeopsal 200g. At 600g total, we first wondered if two of us could handle it, but the owner cheerfully said 'you can do it!' so we went for it — and it turned out to be just the right amount haha. If we'd ordered individual 2-person portions instead, we would've been left wanting more.

Cheonggukjang (fermented soybean stew)!! On the house~ They don't give it to you if you don't want it haha, since it's a love-it-or-hate-it kind of food. But why does cheonggukjang start tasting better as you get older?

Complimentary cheonggukjang stew

We separately ordered the Hallasan cheese steamed egg. Ah right, this is Jeju pork haha. Can you see how fluffy the steamed egg is? Paired with cheese, it's the perfect combo. I'm the type who can't eat BBQ without steamed egg, that's me!

Wow, how are they so good at making steamed egg?! I want their recipe ㅠㅜㅠㅜ

Grilling it yourself: bbol-hangjeong beat the other two cuts

Now, time to eat the meat? You grill the kimchi and meat yourself! It cooks quickly and even if you're not great at grilling, it's hard to mess up — it was delicious no matter how we grilled it. Maybe it's the pan that's good?? haha. It was nice being able to chat with my friend while grilling and eating~!

Personally, of the three cuts, bbol-hangjeong (cheek/neck) was my favorite!! Eating it in one big bite without cutting it up was extra delicious. My friend agreed bbol-hangjeong was the best!! It's chewy and pairs perfectly with wasabi.

A piece of grilled bbol-hangjeong left uncut

I don't often go out for pork back-cut and usually eat samgyeopsal or mokssal, so trying different cuts felt fresh and, honestly, even better. I think I'm about to fall for pork back-cut!!

A birthday dinner out with a friend

My cute friend🥰😘 We came to celebrate her birthday today, and eating this well put us both in a great mood~~ We usually just order delivery when we meet up, so going out for once had us so excited hahahaha.

Table scene during the birthday dinner

I kept saying 'wow, this looks so good, wow, so delicious' while taking photos, and my friend just kept laughing at me hahahaha.

Even the cola glasses at Dokbul Janggun are cute. Looking for a great BBQ restaurant in Ilsan? Looking for a spot near Baekseok Station for a company dinner or a gathering with friends? I highly, highly recommend it! 💓A place you won't regret💓
