Suwon Chinese restaurant with Peking duck pancake refills: Gang's Duck

What does half a Peking duck actually look like when it arrives at your table?

If I just showed you the duck on the red plate, you'd only get half of tonight's story. You need to see the bamboo steamer and the little side dishes next to it too.

Today I had dinner with my girlfriend at Gang's Duck in Ingye-dong, Suwon. We ordered half a Peking duck, Hong Kong-style egg noodles, and yu-hsiang eggplant. I took photos from the entrance all the way to the duck piled onto a pancake, so if you've been thinking about visiting, come take a look with me.

What the Gang's Duck exterior and entrance look like

Here's what the outside of Gang's Duck looks like.

Below the large 'GANGSDUCK' sign hangs a red lantern, and a staircase leads up to a glass door. Beside the entrance were dragon decorations, several posters, and colorful chairs.

I've included a shot of the sign from a distance and a close-up of the entrance. If it's your first time going, this should help you find it.

Red lanterns continue inside too. You can see dark walls, an exposed ceiling, round tables, and duck-themed paintings on the walls.

On the evening I visited, other tables were dining as well. The lighting and table layout in these photos give a sense of the interior mood.

Three dishes for two at Gang's Duck, not just the duck

That evening at Gang's Duck, the two of us ordered three things: half a Peking duck, Hong Kong-style egg noodles, and yu-hsiang eggplant.

The table came with a blue-patterned plate and chopsticks, plus a side dish of cucumber, scallions, sauce, and sugar.

There was also an info card explaining how to eat the Peking duck.

It listed everything from what to put on the pancake to which items were refillable.

Half a Peking duck: a close look at the red plate

Gang's Duck's half Peking duck arrives on a red plate, sliced into bite-sized pieces. Here's the half duck we ordered.

The duck came out already sliced into bite-sized pieces on the red plate.

In the center you can see the browned, roasted skin, with the meat arranged around it. The close-up shot also shows off the glossy surface of the skin.

Beside it sat a bamboo steamer holding the pancakes. Duck on the plate, pancakes, cucumber and scallions — this is basically how Peking duck gets served here, as a whole spread laid out together.

How to stack the pancake, according to the table card

The table info card at Gang's Duck says to unroll the pancake, add duck with the skin on, then top with scallions and cucumber. After that, roll it up and dip it in the sauce.

The photos show everything from the duck, vegetables and sauce piled on the pancake to the finished roll in hand.

There was also some guidance worth knowing before you visit.

It explained to peel off the plastic sheets between the pancakes before eating, and that pancakes, scallions, cucumber and sugar are all refillable. It also mentioned dipping the duck skin in sugar — so besides wrapping it in a pancake, the restaurant offers this combination too.

Hong Kong-style egg noodles with vegetables through the noodles

Gang's Duck's Hong Kong-style egg noodles came out on a round, blue-patterned plate.

Bean sprouts and several vegetables showed through the thin yellow noodles, topped with finely sliced scallions.

I took one shot of the whole plate and another lifting the noodles up with chopsticks. If you're curious about the noodle thickness or the vegetables mixed in, compare the two photos.

The other dish we ordered was yu-hsiang eggplant.

Eggplant sat on a long plate, topped with reddish sauce and finely chopped garnish. The close-up shot shows the whole arrangement, while the photo of a piece lifted with chopsticks shows a single bite up close.
