I wanted somewhere I could enjoy more than just sashimi — a place with seafood stew or braised seafood too — and found Donghae Bada Hoetjip in Dujeong-dong. The menu here ranges from assorted sashimi to seafood stew, braised seafood, and mulhoe, which was exactly what I was looking for :)

Overall I was really satisfied with Donghae Bada Hoetjip in Cheonan — I got to enjoy everything from sashimi to seafood! 🦀 🦐 🐟 It was great being able to taste several different cuts of sashimi, and the seafood and side dishes that came with it made for a really generous spread :)

This is what the exterior looks like! Besides sashimi they also had seafood stew, braised seafood, and monkfish stew, and prawn and gizzard shad season was coming up so those were on sale too!

The menu

Menu board listing sashimi and seafood dishes

They had a wide range of seafood dishes ready to go — sashimi, lobster, seafood stew, braised seafood, monkfish stew, mulhoe, and more. Since I wanted both sashimi and seafood that day, I ordered the assorted sashimi + braised seafood set.

What we ordered — side dishes and accompaniments

Full table of side dishes served with the assorted sashimi
Basic side dishes including salad and beondegi
Seaweed soup and pajeon side dishes

Before the main dishes arrived, some simple side dishes came out first — salad, beondegi (silkworm pupae), pajeon (savory pancake), seaweed soup, and boiled pork. Aged kimchi came too, which went well with the sashimi!

The boiled pork came with dried radish strips, and together they were a perfect match — tender, with no gamey smell, and really tasty!

Grilled herring full of roe

Grilled herring came out too — it had been a long time since I'd had grilled herring, so I enjoyed it a lot. It was full of roe inside, savory and salty.

What's in the assorted sashimi?

Then the main dish, the assorted sashimi, arrived. 🍣 It was made up of a variety of types and cuts. From reddish sashimi to mild white fish, the colors were varied and it looked appetizing just from the visuals 🤍

Each type had a different texture, so it was fun picking through them one by one. Some cuts melted softly, others were chewy, so there was something to suit every preference.

The sashimi was sliced thick, so you could really feel the texture with each bite, and it came with radish sprouts and lemon for a clean finish!

There was chojang (vinegar-chili sauce) too, and dipping it in soy sauce with a touch of wasabi was, as always, the best combo 🤍 Being able to taste several types and cuts at once made this a satisfying set if you like assorted sashimi 👍

Braised seafood — the octopus prepped tableside

Next came the other main dish, the braised seafood 🐙🦐. A very hefty octopus caught my eye right away, and as soon as it arrived a staff member cut and prepped the seafood for us.

Braised seafood with octopus, abalone and blue crab

The big plate was loaded with seafood — octopus, abalone, blue crab, squid, and more, so much that I was completely full ~ The sauce was spicy and sharp, so switching from sashimi to a bite of this felt like a whole different meal! And as a bonus there were bean sprouts and minari (water dropwort), crunchy and fragrant 🥬

The sauce wasn't overly heavy or too intense — more spicy-sharp in a way that kept me reaching for more. To finish, I ordered a bowl of rice, topped it with gim (seaweed) flakes, and cleaned it up properly — the finishing touch is always fried rice, haha.

Crab tempura received through the review event

If they're running the review event, you can also get free crab tempura, so definitely check for it! The crab tempura was crispy and tender and really delicious 🦀

Overall impressions

The sashimi came in several different cuts, so there was fun in picking through them, and being able to enjoy dishes like boiled pork and grilled herring alongside the seafood made for a genuinely hearty, full spread.

Best of all, when I'm craving sashimi, I liked being able to taste several things at once without agonizing over the menu, and it seemed like a good spot for a family meal or a gathering too. This stuck with me as a good seafood restaurant to visit in Cheonan on a day I want to eat well :)
