Cold noodle restaurant in Jinju: Sunjo 1800 mul-naengmyeon at

One of the first things I looked up while planning my Jinju trip was where to eat. Sightseeing matters, sure, but you can't skip the fun of good food, right? I heard there's a dish you absolutely have to try if you go to Jinju, so I dug in.

I've always liked naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles), and Jinju's famous version is exactly that — Jinju naengmyeon! So I visited "Songgiwon Jinju Naengmyeon Direct Store."

It sits right on the road, so it's easy to find, and having a parking lot made it convenient to drive there. Since I arrived early on a rainy evening, the lot was pretty empty too.

What the dining room at Songgiwon Jinju Naengmyeon feels like

Walking into Songgiwon Jinju Naengmyeon Direct Store, the space was clean, bright overall, and the tables were spaced generously enough to eat comfortably.

The place was more pleasant and comfortable than I expected. When you think of a traditional naengmyeon restaurant, you might picture something a bit old and worn, but this felt like a great spot for a family meal, a gathering, or a night out with friends.

What we ordered: Sunjo 1800 mul-naengmyeon and wujeon

Looking over the menu, I ordered the most basic option at Songgiwon Jinju Naengmyeon Direct Store: the mul-naengmyeon (cold noodles in broth) Sunjo 1800 and wujeon (beef yukjeon). The name is a little unusual, right? Mul-naengmyeon (Sunjo 1800!) — the name alone seemed to carry a bit of Jinju's tradition, which got my expectations up, haha.

First came the basic side dishes — two kinds of kimchi — and a cool glass of water.

How the wujeon (Korean beef pancake) tasted

Soon a large plate of wujeon arrived. It's made from 1++(9) grade Korean beef, trimmed and aged, then pan-fried in 100% domestic buckwheat flour, apparently!

The wujeon was warm with a soft, tender texture, and its savory flavor worked really well alongside the cold noodles. Especially the rhythm of eating naengmyeon, then a bite of wujeon, then a sip of cold broth again — that combination is subtly addictive, and I'd recommend it alongside the Jinju naengmyeon.

If you're visiting with two or more people, adding an extra wujeon to share seems like a good idea too.

Sunjo 1800 mul-naengmyeon: yukjeon topping and the broth

Finally, the Sunjo 1800 mul-naengmyeon arrived! After a short wait, the noodles came out looking refreshingly cool just to see. And the first thing that caught my eye was the yukjeon garnish on top of the noodles.

This definitely looks different from the naengmyeon most people picture, right? Jinju naengmyeon is known for its yukjeon garnish, and seeing it in person was genuinely surprising. I loosened the noodles gently with chopsticks, then took a sip of the broth first.

If you're expecting the plain, subtle flavor of Pyongyang naengmyeon, this is a bit different — the broth had a distinctly savory depth unique to Jinju naengmyeon. Made with seafood and meat stock, it has a particular richness that's cool yet savory, and once you taste it, the subtle depth keeps you reaching for spoonful after spoonful of broth. I also grabbed extra side dishes and warm broth from the self-serve bar.

Is Songgiwon worth a dinner stop on a Jinju trip?

Cool, savory broth, chewy noodles, and savory yukjeon on top — plus a warm wujeon on the side made for a hearty, satisfying meal. I tried the mul-naengmyeon this time, so next time I'd like to try the bibim-naengmyeon (spicy mixed version) too.
