Charcoal pork neck grill house in Bolli-dong, Daegu: Supbul Makchang

Kicking off our Daegu trip with a hearty meat meal! 🥩 We visited "Supbul Makchang," a well-known restaurant in Bolli-dong.

Where is Supbul Makchang, and is there parking?

Supbul Makchang is located toward Jukjeon, between Bolli intersection and Bolli Park, and parking is available right in front of the restaurant.

What is Supbul Makchang like late on a Friday night?

This is the overall interior of the restaurant :) We visited on a late Friday evening, and even though it was a bit past dinner time, the place was completely full! It really seemed like a place that's already famous in the neighborhood.

The interior is full of retro charm. There are touches of that retro feeling everywhere in the space.

The kitchen is open, so you can see the whole cooking process, which gave me confidence about hygiene and cleanliness 👨🏻‍🍳

They also have baby chairs available, so it's a good spot for family dinners with young kids.

Supbul Makchang menu and the best cuts to order together

Here's the menu at Supbul Makchang :-) They sell a variety of meats, including Iberico makchang, pork neck, galmaegisal, and galbisal.

They also have a variety of hot pots, stews, rice, and noodle dishes. We ordered two servings of Iberico pork neck and one serving of galmaegisal first! We're the type to dive into the meat first even at a makchang place...

Basic side dishes, galbitang and the self-serve side bar

The basic side dishes they set out first. There's a variety of sauces to go with everything.

There's a self-serve side dish bar across from the kitchen, so if you need more of anything, just grab it yourself. Some things, like wrap vegetables, aren't included by default, so head over to the self-serve bar for those first.

This is the galbitang that comes as a basic side dish — packed with meat and a deep, rich broth, perfect as an anju (food paired with drinks) for soju. I wanted to pay extra for a refill (ㅠ)

Grilling Iberico pork neck and galmaegisal over charcoal

They filled the grill up with plenty of charcoal 🔥

Here's our order — two servings of pork neck and one of galmaegisal! Nice touch that they also gave us rice cake, mushrooms, and potato. Doesn't the raw meat look super fresh!?

Time to grill up two chunks of pork neck. The charcoal was so hot that the meat cooked really quickly.

The pork neck looks absolutely insane, right?

Pork neck usually feels a bit tough, but Supbul Makchang's pork neck was super tender with no gamey smell at all, so it was delicious just on its own. And the braised meat sauce is great simmered once more — pure sweet-and-salty perfection! This is really a place you have to enjoy with drinks..💯

There were plenty of side dish varieties too, so you could wrap it up however you like. Just looking at these photos again is making my mouth water. If you come to Supbul Makchang, I really recommend trying the pork neck!

Last but not least, we finished grilling the galmaegisal 🐮 The staff told us in advance to grill it with the scored side facing down.

We got so full after eating all this that we had to skip the carbs ..🫠 Next time, I'll definitely try the naengi doenjang jjigae (shepherd's purse soybean paste stew). Thanks for the meal~!🐽

Is Supbul Makchang in Bolli-dong worth a visit?

"Supbul Makchang" is a makchang restaurant in Bolli-dong, Daegu with that old-school, nostalgic vibe. The interior was clean, the staff were friendly, and both the meats and the side dishes were all delicious. Next time I'm near Bolli-dong, I'll come back to try the naengi doenjang jjigae.
