Dongtan Korean restaurant for a 19,000-won Ossam dinner set: Ossamgak

Ossamgak is a Korean restaurant on Wangbaesan 3-gil in the Mok-dong area of Dongtan, Hwaseong, Gyeonggi, serving stir-fried squid and bossam (boiled pork wraps). On a second visit for dinner, the Ossam Set Meal costs 19,000 won and brings smoky, spicy stir-fried squid, garlic bossam topped with garlic sauce, and house-made kimchi to eat in turns. Ossamgak is worth recommending for a dinner that puts spicy and mild flavors on one table.

Pyeongtaek cold noodle restaurant 2 minutes from the station: Seoul

Seoul Myeonok is a Pyongyang naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodle) restaurant a 2-minute walk from Pyeongtaek Station in Gyeonggi, open since 1973 and now run by the third generation. The signature Pyongyang naengmyeon costs 11,000 won, bibim naengmyeon 11,000 won, and a half plate of domestic pork belly suyuk (boiled sliced pork) 16,000 won; the clean broth, the sesame-oil-scented bibim sauce and the warm broth refilled four times stood out most. For cold noodles and suyuk together near Pyeongtaek Station, Seoul Myeonok is an easy choice.

Sarangjip is a pork kimchi grill (dwaeji kimchi-guyi) restaurant in Uman-dong, Paldal-gu, Suwon, near Ajou University Hospital. When the weather turns cool, this retro restaurant opens every window for an open-air feel, and one visit brought the medium pork kimchi grill (26,500 won) plus finishing fried rice (2,000 won). After more than 10 visits, Sarangjip still wins on value, the addictive bean sprout soup and the scorched-rice fried rice.

Hanok Korean set-meal dinner in Anjung, Pyeongtaek: Suksudaega

Suksudaega is a hanok Korean set-meal (hanjeongsik) restaurant on Gangbyeon-ro in Anjung-eup, Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi. For a mother's birthday the writer booked a weekday 5:30pm table and ordered the 39,000-won-per-person wanggalbijjim (braised beef short rib) set, and the shrimp with pine nut dressing, royal japchae and Korean beef tteokgalbi were none of them too sweet or salty, so a mother who is usually fussy about restaurant food was the first to say it tasted good. With rooms separated by doors and a large parking lot, Suksudaega is a satisfying choice for parents' birthdays and family gatherings.

Yongin sashimi restaurant open till 4am: steamed live squid, Mr. Squid

Mr. Squid (미스터오징어) Yongin Bojeong is a live-seafood sashimi restaurant on Bojeong-dong Café Street in Yongin, Gyeonggi, open until 4am. The order was whole steamed live squid, four squid at 15,000 won each, eaten down to the rich innards, alongside makjang dipping sauce, side dishes like steamed egg and corn-mayo, and crispy fried shrimp. With open-air seating and plenty of room, Mr. Squid works best as a late-night spot for group dinners and drinks.

Minari shabu lunch for two, ₩30,000, near Giheung-gu Office: Deungchon

Deungchon Shabu Kalguksu Giheung Station Branch is a mushroom kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) and shabu-shabu restaurant on the second basement floor of ICT Valley on Giheung-ro in Yongin, Gyeonggi. Two adults ordered mushroom kalguksu for two plus 190g of shabu beef and ate vegetables, meat, noodles and fried rice for ₩30,000, with generous minari (water celery) and a standout soy-mustard dipping sauce. On a chilly day, Deungchon Shabu Kalguksu is worth a trip for either lunch or dinner near Giheung-gu Office.

Gimpo bakery café for truffle mushroom pizza and pasta: The Nillai

The Nillai is a large basement-level bakery café on Yangchonyeok-gil in Yangchon-eup, Gimpo, Gyeonggi, where brunch, bakery and coffee all sit under one roof. On this visit the order was a choco-egg tart, truffle mushroom pizza and 63 tomato pasta, eaten as lunch and then a café stop. Floor-to-ceiling windows, greenery and three separate zones mean The Nillai never feels like a basement, so it's an easy place to linger.

Bongdam set lunch with self-serve bar gochujang bibimbap: Hwadamga

Hwadamga is a Korean restaurant on Nangnaegi-gil in Bongdam-eup, Hwaseong, Gyeonggi, serving set-menu lunches and stone-plate grilling in the evening. On a weekend drive we ordered the wood-fired mackerel set (16,000 won) and the flame-grilled pork set (16,000 won), then filled plates at the self-serve bar in the middle of the room with salad, namul (seasoned vegetables), tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patty) and japchae (glass noodles) and mixed our own gochujang bibimbap. With coffee, omija (schisandra) tea and mango juice for dessert, Hwadamga is an easy Korean restaurant to bring parents to.

Shrimp rosé pane at Garlic Cook & Story, an Italian spot in Ilsan

Garlic Cook & Story Western Dome is a pasta and pizza restaurant on the 2nd floor of Western Dome in Ilsandong-gu, Goyang, Gyeonggi. After a movie at the CGV cinema, the writer ordered the restaurant's popular shrimp rosé pane (pasta served in a hollowed bread bowl) with a zero-sugar cola, and the thick rosé sauce brimming over the bread and the plump whole shrimp stood out. Garlic Cook & Story runs 11:00 to 21:00 with no break time, which makes it an easy stop for a date or a lunch gathering in Ilsan.
