Bulgwangcheon ramen with hair ties at the bar: Oreno Ramen Eunpyeong

Oreno Ramen Eunpyeong is a chicken paitan ramen restaurant on Bulgwangcheon-gil near Saejeol Station in Eunpyeong, Seoul. On a weekday visit at 2pm the order was karaipaitan at 13,000 won with a soft-boiled egg and tsukune chashu plus a cola served in a highball glass packed with ice, and the bar seats came with hair ties laid out for diners. With free refills on noodles, rice and kimchi, Oreno Ramen Eunpyeong is an easy pick when you want to pile on the toppings.

Tonkatsu restaurant at the Sharosu-gil entrance in Seoul: Gosh Gosh

Gosh Gosh Seoul National University Station branch is a katsu and soba restaurant right in front of Exit 4 of Seoul National University Station, at the entrance to Sharosu-gil in Gwanak, Seoul. The order was toowoomba soba, rosu katsu (pork loin cutlet) and a side of gara-age (Japanese-style fried chicken), served with basic banchan of san-gochu (mild green peppers) and diced radish kimchi, plus barley rice to mix into the leftover soba sauce. Gosh Gosh has several bar seats so solo dining is easy, and the only letdown was rosu katsu arriving without wasabi or salt.

Geumson Deunggalbi Sundubu Geoje Main Branch is a Korean restaurant serving pork back ribs and sundubu (soft tofu stew) on Junggok-ro 1-gil in Gohyeon, Geoje. A mother and daughter ordered three servings of ribs split half spicy sauce and half soy sauce, re-grilled them on the tabletop wire grill, and added the vegetable garnish plus complimentary grilled pork skin and kimchi noodle soup. Three servings proved so generous that the two ate their fill and still packed the leftover ribs to take home.

Old-house café in Gwangalli, Busan with nutty-bean coffee: Deokmi

Deokmi Atelier Gwang-an Branch is a European-style vintage café set in a renovated old house in a back alley of Gwangalli, Suyeong-gu, Busan. On a Busan trip, we stopped by after lunch for an iced americano made with nutty beans (5,500 won), rose thé noir (6,500 won), white peach tiramisu (12,000 won) and crème brûlée French toast (13,000 won), and every room had its own mood, so it was worth a slow look around. Deokmi Atelier is an easy recommendation for resting in a quiet alley after seeing the sea.

Hangsangcharim Kodari Myeongga Ruwon City Branch is a kodari (half-dried pollock) and braised pollock restaurant on Bongojae 3-ro in Gajeong-dong, Seohae, Incheon. Three friends with different tastes shared small glasses of Woonjjang, Monk Food (a dark ale) and Genesis with arugula prosciutto pizza and truffle fries, and Monk Food turned out mild in bitterness with light carbonation, much like Kozel. Baekok Myeongdong is worth a return trip whenever a clear, rich gomtang is what you want in Myeongdong.

Daehung-dong pork backbone BBQ in Daejeon: weekday booking, Yeonam

Yeonam Charcoal-Grilled Pork Backbone & Gamjatang is a Korean charcoal-grill and gamjatang (pork bone soup) restaurant in Daehung-dong, Jung-gu, Daejeon, a 3-minute walk from Sungsimdang bakery. Three people visited on a Thursday at 6:30 pm and ordered the medium stone-plate grilled pork backbone in the original flavor with added udon noodles and a rice ball, refilling the gamjatang broth and side dishes free through the kiosk. Yeonam takes Naver reservations Monday to Thursday, so booking ahead on a weekday is the way to walk in without waiting.
